Book A Revised Correlation of the Cambrian Rocks in the British Isles

Download or read book A Revised Correlation of the Cambrian Rocks in the British Isles written by A. W. A. Rushton and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2011 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reviews the correlation of the British and Irish Cambrian with the current (though incomplete) international standard for the Cambrian. Since the earlier edition of 1972, the basal and upper limits of the Cambrian system have been internationally agreed; so this account excludes Tremadocian rocks but includes some that were formerly considered Neoproterozoic. Half of the series and stage subdivisions are internationally agreed, but for the undefined divisions of the Cambrian the standard used here makes use of data from Avalonian successions. Since the first edition was published, almost every aspect of the Cambrian in the British Isles has been subjected to new study. Here, the plate tectonic make-up of the British Isles is reviewed, new radiometric ages and isotopic studies are summarized and the biostratigraphy is enhanced by the study of acritarchs, especially in the Irish successions.

Download or read book Cambrian of SW Wales written by A.J. Rees and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Memoir reviews, revises and interprets the biostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, process sedimentology, palaeoenvironments and sequence stratigraphy of the classic Cambrian succession of SW Wales. This 1250m thick clastic sedimentary succession, of Terreneuvian to Furongian age, was deposited in environments ranging from alluvial fan to mid–outer shelf. Two lithostratigraphical groups are distinguished, each comprising six formations; where possible and appropriate, original and well-known names are retained in harmony with current usage. High-resolution sequence-stratigraphical techniques, constrained by biostratigraphical data whenever possible, allow the revised lithostratigraphy to be integrated with the western Avalonian chronostratigraphy developed in maritime Canada. A twofold subdivision is recognized. Megasequence 1 (sequences 3-7) spans the Terreneuvian, C2 and much of C3, with deposition occurring in an extensional rift-like regime on an epeirogenically active platform. Sequence 8 lies at the base of Megasequence 2, which extends from late C3 into the early Ordovician, and represents passive margin sedimentation.

Book Landscapes and Landforms of Eastern Canada

Download or read book Landscapes and Landforms of Eastern Canada written by Olav Slaymaker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical book focuses on the geomorphological landscapes of eastern Canada and provides a companion volume to “Landscapes and Landforms of Western Canada” (2017). There are a number of unique characteristics of eastern Canada’s landscapes, notably its magnificent coastlines, the extraordinary variety and extent of wetlands, the huge Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, the high incidence of meteorite craters, the spectacular Niagara Falls, urban karst in Montreal and Ottawa, youthful, glaciated karst in Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec and Nova Scotia, the ubiquitous permafrost terrain of Nunavut, Labrador and northern Quebec and the magnificent arctic fjords and glaciers. Looking at coastlines, the tidal extremes of the Bay of Fundy are world renowned; the structural complexity of the island of Newfoundland is less well known, but produces an astounding variety of coastlines in close succession; the arctic fjordlands of Baffin and Ellesmere islands and the extravagant raised beaches of Hudson Bay bear comparison with the classic fjords of Norway and the Baltic Sea raised beaches. As for wetlands, there are distinctive Arctic, Subarctic, Boreal, Eastern Temperate and Atlantic wetlands, and their extent is second only to those of Russia. In the Hudson and James Bay regions, between 75-100% of the terrestrial surface is comprised of wetlands. One of North America’s largest river basins, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, has its source in Minnesota, straddles the USA-Canada border and debouches into Quebec as the St. Lawrence River and evolves through its estuary into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a journey of almost 5,000 km. As far as meteorite craters are concerned, 10% of the world’s total are located in eastern Canada, including some of the largest and most complex landforms. They are preserved preferentially in the ancient Shield terrain of Quebec. Finally, the three million km2 of permafrost controlled relief in eastern Canada serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of eastern Canada’s landscapes to climate change. Effects of warming are expressed through thawing of the permafrost, disruption of transportation corridors and urban construction problems, ever-present geomorphic hazards.

Fader and published by Ottawa, Canada : Fisheries and Oceans, Scientific Information and Publication Branch. This book was released on 1982 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Map 4015-G accompanies this report, the easternmost and sixth in a series describing the surficial geology of the south-eastern Canadian continental shelf. These regional geological studies have been conducted on a systematic basis. Canadian Hydrographic Charts 4015 (Sydney to St. Pierre), 40141 (Banquereau and Misaine Bank), 4016 (St. Pierre to St. John's), and 8009 (St. Pierre bank to Whale Bank), were used as bethymetric base maps on the compilation of the surficial geology. The map covers 120,046 km2, and is presented at a scale of 1:350,000. The surficial geology is based on an interpretation of data collected on seven cruises conducted by the Atlantic Geoscience Centre at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. The report also includes brief descriptions of the physiography, bedrock geology, and physical oceanography.
