Book Gravitational Atlas of Antarctica

Download or read book Gravitational Atlas of Antarctica written by Jaroslav Klokočník and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents maps of Antarctica, exploring various aspects of its disturbing geopotential and based on the EIGEN 6C4 model, arguably the best gravitational field model currently available. It also provides the latest data on Antarctica’s bedrock topography according to Bedmap 2. In an extensive series of segment maps the book highlights (i) a gravity anomaly (disturbance), (ii) the Marussi tensor of the second derivatives of the disturbing geopotential, (iii) invariants and their ratios, (iv) the strike angle, and (v) virtual deformations. Due to their various degrees of sensitivity to the density contrasts of causative bodies under the Earth’s surface, these maps provide many details that have a range of potential geo-applications. They guide the reader through the entire continent, in segments divided by 30 degrees of longitude, and through geodetic latitudes of between 60 and 90 degrees south. Each segment is complemented by detailed zoom-in maps for selected localities of special interest.

Book Antarctica and Supercontinent Evolution

Download or read book Antarctica and Supercontinent Evolution written by S.L. Harley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antarctica preserves a rock record that spans three and a half billion years of history and has a remarkable story to tell about the evolution of our Earth, from the hottest crustal rocks yet found in an orogenic system, to the assembly and breakup of Gondwana in the Phanerozoic. This volume highlights our improved understanding of the tectonic events that have shaped Antarctica and how these potentially relate to supercontinent assembly and fragmentation. The internal constitution of the East Antarctic Shield is assessed using information available from the basement geology and from detritus preserved as Mesozoic sediments in the Trans Antarctic Mountains. Accretionary orogenesis along the proto-Pacific margin of Antarctica is examined and the volumes of intracrustal melting compared with juvenile magma additions in these complex orogenic systems assessed. This special volume demonstrates the diversity of approaches required to elucidate and understand crustal evolution and evaluate the supercontinent concept.

Book Exploration of Subsurface Antarctica

Download or read book Exploration of Subsurface Antarctica written by M.J. Siegert and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our appreciation of glaciological processes in Antarctica suffers from a lack of observations in regions where numerical models indicate the ice sheet to be susceptible to ocean and/or atmospheric warming. The solution lies in the use and development of glacier geophysics. In this volume we present a series of papers that demonstrate how geophysics can be deployed in Antarctica to comprehend: (1) boundary conditions that influence ice flow such as subglacial topography, the distribution of basal water and ice-sheet rheology; (2) phenomena that might affect ice-flow processes, such as complex internal ice-sheet structures and the proposition of large stores of hitherto unappreciated groundwater; and (3) how glacigenic sediments and formerly glaciated terrain on, and surrounding, the continent can inform us about past ice-sheet dynamics. The volume also takes a historical view on developments leading to current knowledge, examines active ice-sheet processes, and points the way forward on how geophysics can advance quantitative understanding of Antarctic ice-sheet behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixty articles arranged in eight thematic sections refer to most recent geological and geophysical results of Antarctic research. The Precambrian of the East Antarctic shield and its geological history is considered as well as sub-ice topography, geophysics and stratigraphy, sedimentology and geophysics of the surrounding Southern Ocean. Particular emphasis is given to the connection of the Antarctic and the surrounding continents when forming part of Gondwana.
