Book excerpt: The Snail Soup Can Decoy to keep the candy stash safe. The Customizable “Keep Out” Sign to deter meddlesome siblings and parents. A Bunk Bed Communicator made from cardboard tubes (“Psst! Can you keep the snoring down?”). Clever, whimsical, and kind of genius, here are 67 unique projects that will turn any dad with DIY leanings into a mad scientist hero that his kid(s) will adore. No screens, no hi-tech gadgetry. Made by Dad combines the rough-edged, handmade ethos of a Boy Scout manual or The Dangerous Book for Boys with a sly sense of humor that kids love. Scott Bedford, a creative director by day and Webby Award–winning blogger by nights and weekends, wields an X-ACTO knife, magic marker, and prodigious imagination to create endlessly delightful projects for his two sons. He knows that kids like contraptions and gadgets, things that are surprising—a chair that appears to be balanced on eggshells. Things that are complex—a multilevel city, with buildings, tunnels, and roads, built from old boxes around the legs of a table. And especially things with humor—the Snappy Toast Rack, made to resemble a crocodile’s gaping mouth. The projects are shown in full-color photographs, and the instructions are illustrated in detailed line drawings that exude personality. Some are quick and simple enough to be done in a coffee shop; others are more of an afternoon project— yielding hours and hours of rich, imaginative playtime.

Book The Edge Becomes the Center

Download or read book The Edge Becomes the Center written by DW Gibson and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “generous, vigorous, and enlightening look at class and space in New York” examines the human side of gentrification—“a joy to read” (The Paris Review). For years, journalists, policymakers, critics, and historians have tried to explain just what happens when new money and new residents flow into established neighborhoods. But now, “Mr. Gibson lets the city speak for itself, and it speaks with charm, swagger and heartening resilience” (The New York Times). The Edge Becomes the Center captures, in their own words, the stories of people?brokers, buyers, sellers, renters, landlords, artists, contractors, politicians, and everyone in between?who are shaping and being shaped by the new New York City. In this extraordinary oral history, Gibson shows us what urban change looks and feels like by exposing us to the voices of the people living through it. Drawing on the plainspoken, casually authoritative tradition of Jane Jacobs and Studs Terkel, The Edge Becomes the Center is an inviting and essential portrait of the way we live now.

Book Theory s Curriculum

Download or read book Theory s Curriculum written by Joseph Bedford and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural theory went through an academic renaissance in the 1970s and 1980s, with scholars forging new links with groundbreaking theoretical movements of the time, from feminism and postcolonialism to semiotics, phenomenology, and deconstructivism. During these years, theory became one of the most central ingredients of architecture as a synthetic disciplinary manifestation connecting history, criticism, and practice. Yet architectural theory has become stagnant and disoriented in recent decades. It has been caught in the institutional inertia of pedagogical reproduction, handtied by the neoliberalization of intellectual labor, and overwhelmed by the disorientations of media-technical change and its impact upon the attention economy. In an age of global integration and world culture, theory's debt to a Western tradition of philosophical, historical, and critical reason has been brought into question. Theory's Curriculum catalyzes an emerging discourse upon the fate and future of architectural theory in our time. It gathers philosophical reflections, historical diagnoses, and polemical arguments from a younger generation of teachers, writers, academics, historians, and theorists who are each charged with teaching architectural theory to new generations of students in the classroom. Together they reassess the standard ways in which architectural theory has been taught, either through a history of theoretical concerns, a tabulation of theoretical frameworks, or a roster of authors. They address themselves to the conditions that frame theoretical labors; and reflect on who constructs architecture's theoretical canon, who speaks as a theorist, who theory speaks about, who theory addresses, and about what, why, how, and for what purpose.

One is David, a half-brother she never knew about, and the other is a task she doesn't want: to open a winterwood box, magically sealed by her distant ancestor. On Ross' side she has her rag-tag crew of barely reformed pirates, her conflicted new brother, the jealous ghost of her dead husband, a dashing piratical admirer, and a sexy wolf shapechanger. (Please don't ever call him a werewolf. Just don't!) Ranged against her are the Kingsmen, who would hang her for murder and piracy; the Mysterium, who would hang her for witchcraft, and a powerful agent of the Crown who fights magic with darker magic.

Book The Social Construction of Technological Systems anniversary edition

Download or read book The Social Construction of Technological Systems anniversary edition written by Wiebe E. Bijker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-05-18 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anniversary edition of an influential book that introduced a groundbreaking approach to the study of science, technology, and society. This pioneering book, first published in 1987, launched the new field of social studies of technology. It introduced a method of inquiry—social construction of technology, or SCOT—that became a key part of the wider discipline of science and technology studies. The book helped the MIT Press shape its STS list and inspired the Inside Technology series. The thirteen essays in the book tell stories about such varied technologies as thirteenth-century galleys, eighteenth-century cooking stoves, and twentieth-century missile systems. Taken together, they affirm the fruitfulness of an approach to the study of technology that gives equal weight to technical, social, economic, and political questions, and they demonstrate the illuminating effects of the integration of empirics and theory. The approaches in this volume—collectively called SCOT (after the volume's title) have since broadened their scope, and twenty-five years after the publication of this book, it is difficult to think of a technology that has not been studied from a SCOT perspective and impossible to think of a technology that cannot be studied that way.

Book On a New Condition for Physical Realizability of Planar Antennas

Download or read book On a New Condition for Physical Realizability of Planar Antennas written by Donald R. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior that all physically realizable aperture distributions (tangential electric field in an aperture consisting of holes in a perfectly conducting planar sheet) must have at their edges is shown to be as follows. The components perpendicular and parallel to the aperture edge must each vanish with distance d from the edge as d(alpha), with alpha = 1 for the perpendicular component and alpha = 2 for the parallel component. An interesting consequence of this realizability condition is that the pedestal form of edge behavior usually assumed in aperture theory is physically impossible. (Author).
