Book excerpt: In USA Today bestselling author Sally MacKenzie’s intoxicatingly romantic series, the “fallen” ladies of Puddledon Manor’s Benevolent Home are restoring their reputations—and their future prospects—by operating their very own brewery and alehouse . . . As the founder of the Home, Jo, the widowed Lady Havenridge, is determined to be there for the women who need her. But when those same women conspire to accept an invitation on her behalf, she finds herself suddenly on the way to the Earl of Darrow’s home for the christening party of the son of her longtime friend and former partner, Pen, now the Countess of Darrow. Guests will include her other former partner, Caro—and Edward Russell, the new Duke of Grainger and the Home’s generous benefactor. While Jo is determined to resist her friends’ matchmaking ways, the duke’s handsome looks and charming words are enough to make the lovely widow a little reckless . . . Even after a year, the title of “duke” still sits strangely on Edward Russell’s shoulders. But the responsibilities of the title are his duty, no matter his less-than-positive opinion of the nobility. When Edward encounters Jo—capable, fun, and utterly irresistible--he’s delighted to find someone he truly connects with. A trick of fate has placed them on two different paths . . . but Edward is beginning to realize that perhaps he’s notthe kind of man who does the expected thing after all . . . Book Christmas with the Best Man

Download or read book Christmas with the Best Man written by Ari Thatcher and published by Aspendawn Press. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quirky, sexy continuation of the Destination Weddings series featuring Joey and Jasmine, whom we first met in The Rock Star’s Wedding. Christmas in Ireland…what could be more romantic? The day after Chaz and Kenzi’s wedding in Ireland, Jasmine is still riding the romantic high. Then a polar vortex brings in the storm of the century and now she’s stuck in Ireland with the to-die-for best man, Joey. That slow sexy smile of his heats her up only to have his alternating hot and cold personality shatter her fantasies. Locals say it could be a week before they can leave the island. A week alone he could handle. A week in a small room with this perky event planner would be hell. Yes, she’s beautiful, she might even be hot if she’d slow down long enough for a guy to get to know her, but it’s probably a good thing she doesn’t. A “one week stand” between the best friends of the bride and groom would make life unbearable down the road.

Book The Legend of Willie Mickey the Duke

Download or read book The Legend of Willie Mickey the Duke written by Howard Burman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950s, they played centerfield in New York ballparks only a few miles apart. The comparisons were inevitable. From Brooklyn soda fountains to Queens street corners to Manhattan boardrooms, the argument raged: who was the greatest—Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, or Duke Snider? The trajectories of their lives were similar. They were born into the game and taught by their baseball-playing fathers at an early age. All three dreamed of baseball greatness—dreams that came at a cost. When they signed to play professional baseball, they were each hyped to become the greatest players in the game. The pressure to live up to these expectations took a heavy toll on them. The story of Willie, Mickey & the Duke is the story of three superb athletes who became baseball legends--what it did for them and what it did to them.

Book Crippling Leviathan

Download or read book Crippling Leviathan written by Melissa M. Lee Desfor and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers worry that "ungoverned spaces" pose dangers to security and development. Why do such spaces exist beyond the authority of the state? Earlier scholarship—which addressed this question with a list of domestic failures—overlooked the crucial role that international politics play. In this shrewd book, Melissa M. Lee argues that foreign subversion undermines state authority and promotes ungoverned space. Enemy governments empower insurgents to destabilize the state and create ungoverned territory. This kind of foreign subversion is a powerful instrument of modern statecraft. But though subversion is less visible and less costly than conventional force, it has insidious effects on governance in the target state. To demonstrate the harmful consequences of foreign subversion for state authority, Crippling Leviathan marshals a wealth of evidence and presents in-depth studies of Russia's relations with the post-Soviet states, Malaysian subversion of the Philippines in the 1970s, and Thai subversion of Vietnamese-occupied Cambodia in the 1980s. The evidence presented by Lee is persuasive: foreign subversion weakens the state. She challenges the conventional wisdom on statebuilding, which has long held that conflict promotes the development of strong, territorially consolidated states. Lee argues instead that conflictual international politics prevents state development and degrades state authority. In addition, Crippling Leviathan illuminates the use of subversion as an underappreciated and important feature of modern statecraft. Rather than resort to war, states resort to subversion. Policymakers interested in ameliorating the consequences of ungoverned space must recognize the international roots that sustain weak statehood.

Book Waterman

Download or read book Waterman written by David Davis and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waterman is the first comprehensive biography of Duke Kahanamoku (1890–1968): swimmer, surfer, Olympic gold medalist, Hawaiian icon, waterman. Long before Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz made their splashes in the pool, Kahanamoku emerged from the backwaters of Waikiki to become America’s first superstar Olympic swimmer. The original “human fish” set dozens of world records and topped the world rankings for more than a decade; his rivalry with Johnny Weissmuller transformed competitive swimming from an insignificant sideshow into a headliner event. Kahanamoku used his Olympic renown to introduce the sport of “surf-riding,” an activity unknown beyond the Hawaiian Islands, to the world. Standing proudly on his traditional wooden longboard, he spread surfing from Australia to the Hollywood crowd in California to New Jersey. No American athlete has influenced two sports as profoundly as Kahanamoku did, and yet he remains an enigmatic and underappreciated figure: a dark-skinned Pacific Islander who encountered and overcame racism and ignorance long before the likes of Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and Jackie Robinson. Kahanamoku’s connection to his homeland was equally important. He was born when Hawaii was an independent kingdom; he served as the sheriff of Honolulu during Pearl Harbor and World War II and as a globetrotting “Ambassador of Aloha” afterward; he died not long after Hawaii attained statehood. As one sportswriter put it, Duke was “Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey combined down here.” In Waterman, award-winning journalist David Davis examines the remarkable life of Duke Kahanamoku, in and out of the water.
