Inside each copy you will find the unsolved literary cipher of the century, designed by mathematics PhD Daniel Weingard; BECOMING HERO was a semi-finalist in the nationwide cinematic novel competition, and both of the voice actors for the audiobook have won performance awards. Why so meta? Skye's a comic book superhero with a gun in his hand and a gripe against his author. Every girl Skye's ever dated is either dead or trying to take over the world, and in the series finale, Skye's best friend kills him. Or so he thinks. The weapon meant to disintegrate Skye lands him in his author's universe. With a shot at revenge. Skye, meet Jace. Jacen Howard's a brilliant #blerd math whiz and comics aficionado - but at his West Baltimore high school that's a bad thing, and if the bullying isn't bad enough, Jace's cop-father regularly pisses off the neighbors. Jace doesn't see himself as a hero; he's just trying to survive. Jace might be just the hero Skye needs. But Skye won't open up when Jace tries to ease him out of PTSD, and the author's still torturing his friends. As Skye's mood swings and nightmares escalate, Jace realizes that if he doesn't uncover his roommate's real identity soon, Skye will hurt someone-and Skye's still deciding if murder will save his world, or damn his soul.

Download or read book Beyond Heroes written by Kim Barnas and published by ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospitals have long relied on the heroics of one brilliant nurse or doctor to save the day. Such heroics often result in temporary workarounds and quick fixes that leave not only patients and quality care at risk, but also increase costs. This is the story of an organization breaking that habit. Like a growing number of healthcare organizations around the world, ThedaCare, Inc. has been using lean thinking and the principles of the Toyota Production System to improve quality of care, reduce waste, and become more reliable. But lean thinking was incompatible with ThedaCare’s old top-down, hero-based system of management. Kim Barnas, former SVP of ThedaCare, shows us how she and her team created a management system that is stable and lean, to spur continuous improvement. Beyond Heroes shows the reader, step by step, how ThedaCare teams developed the system, using the stories of its doctors, nurses and administrators to illustrate. The book explores each of the eight essential components of the lean system, from front-line problem solving with the scientific method to daily team huddles and creating standard work for leaders all the way to the top of an organization. Finally, the author introduces four executives from healthcare systems across North America who have implemented ThedaCare’s system and share the lessons they learned along the way. Beyond Heroes is not just a call to action or an argument for a better healthcare system. It is a necessary roadmap through the rocky terrain ahead, one that healthcare leaders can customize to their special needs.

Book Butch Heroes

  • Author : Ria Brodell
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2018-10-30
  • ISBN : 0262038978
  • Pages : 95 pages

Download or read book Butch Heroes written by Ria Brodell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits and texts recover lost queer history: the lives of people who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. “A serious—and seriously successful—queer history recovery project.” —Publishers Weekly Katherina Hetzeldorfer, tried “for a crime that didn't have a name” (same sex sexual relations) and sentenced to death by drowning in 1477; Charles aka Mary Hamilton, publicly whipped for impersonating a man in eighteenth-century England; Clara, aka “Big Ben,” over whom two jealous women fought in 1926 New York: these are just three of the lives that the artist Ria Brodell has reclaimed for queer history in Butch Heroes. Brodell offers a series of twenty-eight portraits of forgotten but heroic figures, each accompanied by a brief biographical note. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell's detailed and witty paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, slyly subverting a religious template. The portraits and the texts offer intriguing hints of lost lives: cats lounge in the background of domestic settings; one of the figures is said to have been employed variously as “a prophet, a soldier, or a textile worker”; another casually holds a lit cigarette. Brodell did extensive research for each portrait, piecing together a life from historical accounts, maps, journals, paintings, drawings, and photographs, finding the heroic in the forgotten.

In Training Heroes, Steve Hunter explores the foundation for Marcus's success as a Navy SEAL-his training in Buke-ryu, a style of traditional martial arts created by Hunter. Buke-ryu combines the best of Okinawan karate-jutsu and Japanese aiki- and ju-jutsu, along with training in modern weapons and outdoor skills such as hunting and tracking. Hunter, as the innovator of Buke-ryu, trains the whole person to develop a strong body, a sound mind, and a spirit grounded in Christian values. Hunter instilled all these qualities in his student Marcus Luttrell and provided training that proved essential to Marcus's amazing survival in Afghanistan. A powerful story of a teacher's importance in developing a warrior, Training Heroes sheds new light on Marcus's journey in Afghanistan.
