It is no longer I, but another whose life is just beginning.” (Samuel Beckett) These words by Samuel Beckett (1906 –1989), a remarkable literary talent of the past century, illustrate quite well the connection between Beckett and his stories. Quite often the writer used parts from his own life as models for his novels, poems and short stories. In the scope of this paper this will be exemplified on a relatively unknown short story written by him in 1934, "One Case in a Thousand". At the same time, I would like to show another influence on Beckett's work besides his biography. Therefore, the relationship between the two Irish writers Samuel Beckett and James Joyce will also be a central part of this work. This influence will be examined by a comparison of the above mentioned short story written by Beckett and another one written by Joyce, namely "A Painful Case" (1914). Beckett's experiences gave him many sources of inspiration for his work, as his literary career was not always secure and success at times out of grasp. There were many disturbances, private as well as job-related ones, and his path was not always straight-lined. Writing seemed to be a cure when life was hardly bearable. It was not until the late 1930s, after the publication of Murphy in 1938 and also after the Second World War in particular, that he became quite well-known. He found a larger circle of readers which enabled him to concentrate on his creative literary work at last, which was finally acknowledged by the award of the Nobel Prize in 1969. Today, his plays "Endgame" (1957) and "Waiting for Godot" (1952) are well-known across the globe. However, the work which formed the major part of his writing, such as his poems, plays and short stories, is still not entirely common ground. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to focus on his short story "One Case in a Thousand", and also, because it contains a lot of autobiographical hints.

John Fletcher and John P. Harrington provide complementary studies of two of Beckett's early short stories in relation to their possible "counterparts" in Dubliners. James Acheson and David Cohen both draw on Ulysses and various works by Beckett to focus attention on links and divergencies between the two writers in their uses of allusions. Analyzing fictional techniques, Michael Patrick Gillespie foregrounds the impulse for gaming that Joyce and Beckett both employ as a narrative strategy. Alan Loxterman explores the techniques both writers use to raise metaphysical questions. Susan Brienza and Phyllis Carey provide complementary readings of artistic consciousness, Brienza drawing attention to bodily fluids and elimination as images of creation, and Carey focusing on the divergent debts of both writers to Dante. Finally, Steven Connor and Ed Jewinski attack the problems of "authority" and "influence," respectively in the process illuminating differences in modernist and postmodernist understandings of these concepts. A bibliography of well over one hundred entries, compiled by John P. Harrington, lists the most substantive discussions of the Joyce-Beckett relationship. Denis Regan's one-act play Becket et Joyce et Beckettesque, creates a medley of Beckett and Joyce echoes through imaginative dialogues in the afterlife mind of Samuel Beckett. Although the volume was in progress when Samuel Beckett died in December 1989, it now serves as a memorial and a tribute to both Samuel Beckett and James Joyce.

Before Richards could accept the work changes had to be applied that were accompanied by an exchange of various letters between author and publisher. The reason for Richard's hesitation to publish the book in its first version was the very accuracy of its language. Literary conventions would have been shocked by Joyce's accurate and entirely realistic description of social situations and psychological states. In his letter to Grant Richards Joyce tries to justify his style, and it is thus that he speaks of 'scrupulous meanness' for the first time. The term 'meanness' connotes stinginess or the lack of generosity. Joyce uses it to describe the economy of language applying to his stories. However, the interpretation demands a more complicated understanding of the term. 'Scrupulousness' is a crucial element both in Joyce's use of language, and in the structure and form of the stories. 'Scrupulous meanness' refers to a most complex and heavily allusive style that determines the reading of Dubliners. From the minimum of words Joyce succeeds to extract the maximum effect so that the very economy of his style gives Dubliners such concentration and resonance that it "passes through realism into symbolism" (Dubliners,1991, p. xix). Joyce puts this style forward as a means to express his moral intent.
