Book excerpt: The ‘strife’ is a competition among noble families to win the throne. The contenders are tested with a series of challenging events to see if they are worthy enough to be the king of the country. Only a few people have made it out alive. Aaron was a rebellious, awkward and loud kid with his head stuck in the clouds. At the end of the day, he was just another ordinary kid raised by his single mother who worked hard for him. Never in his seventeen years of life did he think that he would have to fight for a kingdom he didn’t even know existed. Zaniyah’s family was charged with protecting the heir and staying by his side. She now has to protect the best friend she had lied to for six years. “Why did you lie to me?” he asked; his voice was full of pain. “They were orders,” she replied, forcing every cell in her body to not break down and hug him.

Book excerpt: Named one of the Best Books of 2017 by the Philadelphia Inquirer: All hell breaks loose in the liberal bubble when a mother's life spirals out of control when she's forced to rethink her bleeding heart ideals. For Karen Kipple, it isn't enough that she works full-time in the nonprofit sector for an organization that helps children from disadvantaged homes. She's also determined to live her personal life in accordance with her ideals. This means sending her daughter, Ruby, to an integrated public school in their Brooklyn neighborhood. But when a troubled student from a nearby housing project begins bullying children in Ruby's class, the distant social and economic issues Karen has always claimed to care about so passionately begin to feel uncomfortably close to home. A daring, discussable satire about gentrification and liberal hypocrisy, Class is also a smartly written story that reveals how life as we live it -- not as we like to imagine it -- often unfolds in gray areas.

Book Tormented Soul of an Empty Grave Before I Knew You

Download or read book Tormented Soul of an Empty Grave Before I Knew You written by Shannan Starr and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tormented Soul of an Empty Grave Things were beginning to take a turn for the worse. I thought I had a handle on this thing, but this thing had a handle on me. Stress and utter fear internalized and cemented my soul into pessimism. There was no rest for me. I was rotting from spiritual and mental decay from the inside out. I wreaked of death, and I was the only one that could smell it. Grief hit me like a crashing wave, and I was sinking deep from within, deep within myself, within the confines of my own rigid mind. I took a look at the grave set before me, but it was empty! How could this be? Had I completely lost the little bit of sanity I had left? My God! You have to save me! God revealed to me His ability to heal and set free... “I will do all that you ask of me, if you want it, if you allow me.” Only He could show me how to overcome death that did not die, flesh that could not cry, and release the extraordinary control I would hold on to because it was most important to me. Jesus—Was I able to allow myself to bleed out for the sake of honoring God’s will for my life? Before I Knew You Drowning in the stains of childhood trauma, survival of the fittest became my motto. Crushing the tongues of those who had spoken against my destiny was every bit of the motivation I needed to survive...to thrive in a dark place where no light was visible to the natural eye. I was determined to not allow the abhorrent molestation, abuse, abandonment, and pure hatred control my life any longer, so I took a stand. But what exactly was I taking a stand for? Maybe it was to win the love of my abusers. Could it be possible to take a stand against the Almighty God Himself? You know, taking a stand to find myself doesn’t sound too bad, right? There had to be some logical explanation for feeling empty inside of my own body. I once looked at my reflection in the mirror, and it stared back at me. Could standing in front of a mirror finally give me the answer I was looking for? I didn’t know if I was coming or going. I was lost with no sense of direction, and the only definite path to take was down. Whatever this thing was that I was trying so desperately to accomplish, it would ultimately turn my world “right side in.”

Book excerpt: This is the 2nd edition of volume 6 of the ten volumes of The Meaning And Explanation Of The Glorious Qur'an. The first edition of this book contained many formatting and typing errors. In this new edition, we have corrected all the errors found in the first edition. We have also re-arranged the structure of the book and added the full Arabic Text of the thirty Parts of the Qur'an. The reader is now able to read not only the meaning, the transliteration and the tafsir (explanation) of the Glorious Qur'an but also the full Arabic text as well. Our mission is to gather in one place, for the English-speaking public, all relevant information needed to make the Qur'an more understandable and easier to study. This book tries to do this by providing the following: 1. The Arabic Text for those who are able to read Arabic 2. Transliteration of the Arabic text for those who are unable to read the Arabic script. This will give them a sample of the sound of the Qur'an, which they could not otherwise comprehend from reading the English meaning. 3. The meaning of the qur'an (translated by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Ph.D. and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan) 4. Background introductions by two famous Islamic scholars, Maududi and Ibn Kathir 5. Explanation (abridged Tafsir) by Ibn Kathir (translated by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri) We hope that by doing this an ordinary English-speaker will be able to pick up a copy of this book and study and comprehend The Glorious Qur'an in a way that is acceptable to the understanding of the Rightly-guided Muslim Ummah (Community).

Download or read book Private Sins Public Crimes written by Martin Mittelmeier and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking scholarly study of crime and punishment in Qajar Iran Drawing on a rich array of primary sources in multiple languages, Farzin Vejdani argues that the ambiguity in defining the boundaries between private and public in Qajar Iran often corresponded with the jurisdictional friction between government authorities and religious scholars regarding who had the authority to police and punish public crimes. This ambiguity had implications for the spaces in which illicit acts were carried out: “private” parties in domestic residences where music, alcohol, and prostitution were present were often tolerated by local police officials but raised the ire of religious authorities and their followers, who raided these residences, ironically in violation of strong Islamic norms of privacy. Crimes that were manifest but remained unpunished triggered a crisis of legitimacy that often coincided with upstart Islamic religious scholars challenging the state’s authority. Even when the government had every intention of punishing a crime, convicted criminals sought shelter in sanctuaries—including shrines, mosques, royal stables, and telegraph offices—which were even more inviolable than private residences. This inviolability, grounded in both Islamic prohibitions of violence on sacred grounds and Iranian imperial traditions of redress, allowed criminals to negotiate a lesser sentence, safe passage for voluntary exile, or forgiveness.

Book Beyond the Binary

  • Author : Saadia Yacoob
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2024-05-07
  • ISBN : 0520393805
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Binary written by Saadia Yacoob and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. One of the most hotly debated issues in contemporary Muslim ethics is the status of women in Islamic law. Whereas Muslim conservatives argue that gender-differentiated legal rulings reflect complementary gender roles, Muslim feminists argue that Islamic law has subordinated women and is thus in need of reform. The shared assumption on both sides, however, is that gender fundamentally shapes an individual’s legal status. Beyond the Binary explores an expansive cross section of topics in ninth- to twelfth-century Hanafi legal thought, ranging from sexual crimes to consent to marriage, to show that early Muslim jurists imagined a world built not on a binary distinction between male and female but on multiple intersecting hierarchies of gender, age, enslavement, lineage, class, and other social roles. Saadia Yacoob offers a restorative reading of Islamic law, arguing that its intersectional and relational understanding of legal personhood offers a productive space for Muslim feminists to move beyond critique and instead think with and through the Islamic legal tradition.
