Book This Promise of Change

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1956, one year before federal troops escorted the Little Rock 9 into Central High School, fourteen year old Jo Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee. At first things went smoothly for the Clinton 12, but then outside agitators interfered, pitting the townspeople against one another. Uneasiness turned into anger, and even the Clinton Twelve themselves wondered if the easier thing to do would be to go back to their old school. Jo Ann--clear-eyed, practical, tolerant, and popular among both black and white students---found herself called on as the spokesperson of the group. But what about just being a regular teen? This is the heartbreaking and relatable story of her four months thrust into the national spotlight and as a trailblazer in history. Based on original research and interviews and featuring backmatter with archival materials and notes from the authors on the co-writing process.

Book Discourse Markers

Download or read book Discourse Markers written by Deborah Schiffrin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse markers - the particles oh, well, now, then, you know and I mean, and the connectives so, because, and, but and or - perform important functions in conversation. Dr Schiffrin's approach is firmly interdisciplinary, within linguistics and sociology, and her rigourous analysis clearly demonstrates that neither the markers, nor the discourse within which they function, can be understood from one point of view alone, but only as an integration of structural, semantic, pragmatic, and social factors. The core of the book is a comparative analysis of markers within conversational discourse collected by Dr Schiffrin during sociolinguistic fieldwork. The study concludes that markers provide contextual coordinates which aid in the production and interpretation of coherent conversation at both local and global levels of organization. It raises a wide range of theoretical and methodological issues important to discourse analysis - including the relationship between meaning and use, the role of qualitative and quantitative analyses - and the insights it offers will be of particular value to readers confronting the very substantial problems presented by the search for a model of discourse which is based on what people actually say, mean, and do with words in everyday social interaction.

Four months later, when their bodies were found in a lonely patch of woods, the police would launch a three-year investigation leading to the arrest of Patricia Lynne Rorrer—a young mother who had never met either victim—as the monster responsible. Book Luggage

Book excerpt: “I moved to USA from Poland. I was 22 years old then. I thought it will be so amazing, just like I always thought my life would be. My dream of going to the incredible paradise that USA stands for many, was coming true. So happy, so excited, so fearless. Soon, my "color glasses" felt off and the real, very brutal life has started. Life to survive! My life went from wealthy to poor; from having lots of friends to feeling alone and forgotten; from not worried about food to that excruciating pain in my stomach caused by hunger. Never thought I will have to worry about being homeless but my destiny had different plans for me. I went from being loved, cared to that pain of being abused physically, broken down mentally. I learned the definition of true, deep, incredible love filled with passion, butterflies, happiness. I had the privilege to experience the pain of a broken heart; where my soul had been ripped out of me without any warnings. I went from somebody to nobody, from being smart collage girl to confused, lost little child. Luck of English knowledge, total culture shock and pure fear have welcomed me at the airport, where emotional roller coaster has become my every day companion. My road of life has been very hard, filled with rocks but I am still heading forward, dragging my luggage behind. Luggage filled with my life, life of a Polish immigrant." www.facebook.com/taneyalyn

Book Graduate Students Becoming Qualitative Researchers

Download or read book Graduate Students Becoming Qualitative Researchers written by Char Ullman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through conducting an ethnographic study about doctoral students from traditionally underrepresented groups who are learning to conduct ethnographic research, this volume offers unique insight into the challenges and experiences through which these students develop their skills and identities as qualitative researchers. Foregrounding the stories and perspectives of students from minority backgrounds including Latinx, Black, differently abled, and queer students, Graduate Students Becoming Qualitative Researchers identifies how the process of learning to conduct ethnographic research underpins doctoral students’ success, confidence, and persistence in the academy. Chapters follow students during a one-year ethnographic research course during which they learn about ethnography, and also conduct observations, write field notes, interview participants, and gather artifacts. Offering important pedagogical insights into how ethnography and academic writing are communicated, the text also tackles questions of access and diversity within scholarship and highlights barriers to first-generation and minoritized students' success, including impostor syndrome, stereotype vulnerability, and access to time, knowledge, and capital. This volume will prove valuable to doctoral students, postgraduate researchers, scholars, and educators conducting qualitative research across the fields of education and rhetoric, as well as the humanities and social sciences. It will also appeal to those interested in multiculturalism and diversity within the education sector.
