Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corazón Abierto: Mexican American Voices in Texas Music provides a wide view of the myriad contributions Mexican American artists have made to music in Texas and the United States. Based on interviews with longtime stalwarts of Mexican American music—Flaco Jiménez, Tish Hinojosa, Ernie Durawa, Rosie Flores, and others—and also conversations with newer voices like Lesly Reynaga, Marisa Rose Mejia, Josh Baca, and many more, Kathleen Hudson allows the musicians to tell their own stories in a unique and personal way. As the artists reveal in their free-ranging discussions with Hudson, their influences go far beyond traditionally Mexican genres like conjunto, norteño, and Tejano to extend into rock, jazz, country-western, zydeco, and many other styles. Hudson’s survey also includes essays, poetry, and other creative works by Dagoberto Gilb, Sandra Cisneros, and others, but the core of the book consists of what she describes as “a collection of voices from different locations in Texas. . . . Some represent voices from the edge, while others give us a view from the center.” Weaving together a tapestry that combines “family, borders, creativity, music, food, and community,” the book presents an image as varied and difficult to define as the musicians themselves. By sharing the artists’ accounts of their influences, their experiences, their family stories, and their musical and cultural journeys, Corazón Abierto reminds us that borders can be gateways, that differences enrich, rather than isolate.

Book Coraz n from the Heart of Latin America

Download or read book Coraz n from the Heart of Latin America written by W. R. Stanton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.R. Stanton spent the early 1970s hitchiking, taking buses, and riding atop trains and trucks through Mexico, Central America, and the Andes, seeking to experience more of the native culture he had fallen in love with during an earlier trip to Mexico. Almost twenty years later, as a professional photographer and filmmaker, he returned to Latin America to photograph what made his original experiences there so life-transforming: the people. Now, after a long career as a successful photographer and filmmaker, he has focused his efforts on creating a book that features the photos he took and the experiences he enjoyed working and traveling in the region over four decades. As the story of his early travels in the 1970s unfolds, it becomes clear that young people from all around the world were on a similar journey. This was a time when young people felt safe hitchhiking or traveling however they wantedas long as they had a backpack and a little cash. Stantons story and photos offer a window into what it was like to live in that more innocent time.

Book Echoes of a Distant Summer

Download or read book Echoes of a Distant Summer written by Guy Johnson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You done lived a tough life, boy, and I know I’m part responsible for that. I ain’t askin’ you to excuse me or forgive me. Just know I did the best I knew to do. I was just tryin’ to make you tough enough to deal with the world. To stand tall among men, I knew you had to be strong and have yo’ own mind.” “You were preparing me for war, Grandfather.” Guy Johnson, the author of the critically acclaimed debut Standing at the Scratch Line, continues the Tremain family saga. Jackson St. Clair Tremain hasn’t spoken to his grandfather King in nearly twenty years. Disgusted by the violence and bloodlust that seemed to be his grandfather’s way of life, Jackson chose to distance himself from King and live a simpler life. But now King is gravely ill, and his impending death places Jackson’s life—as well as those of his family and friends—in jeopardy. Reluctantly, Jackson travels to Mexico to see King. But after a brief reconciliation, his grandfather is assassinated, and Jackson suspects that his grandmother Serena may have had a hand in it. Jackson takes control of King’s organization, and as he does, he reflects on the summers he spent in Mexico as a child and the lessons he learned there at the knee of his strong-willed, complex grandfather. In Echoes of a Distant Summer, Guy Johnson introduces us to a new hero, Jackson St. Clair Tremain, who learns that, like his grandfather, he must be willing to protect those he loves—at all costs.

Download or read book Coraz n de Dixie written by Julie M. Weise and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Latino migration to the U.S. South became increasingly visible in the 1990s, observers and advocates grasped for ways to analyze "new" racial dramas in the absence of historical reference points. However, as this book is the first to comprehensively document, Mexicans and Mexican Americans have a long history of migration to the U.S. South. Corazon de Dixie recounts the untold histories of Mexicanos' migrations to New Orleans, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, and North Carolina as far back as 1910. It follows Mexicanos into the heart of Dixie, where they navigated the Jim Crow system, cultivated community in the cotton fields, purposefully appealed for help to the Mexican government, shaped the southern conservative imagination in the wake of the civil rights movement, and embraced their own version of suburban living at the turn of the twenty-first century. Rooted in U.S. and Mexican archival research, oral history interviews, and family photographs, Corazon de Dixie unearths not just the facts of Mexicanos' long-standing presence in the U.S. South but also their own expectations, strategies, and dreams.
