Book excerpt: A detailed and inventive study of the thinking at work in modern painting, drawing on a formidable body of scholarly evidence to challenge modernist and phenomenological readings of art history, The Brain-Eye presents a series of interlinked ‘case studies’ in which philosophical thought encounters the hallucinatory sensations unleashed by ‘painter-researchers.’ Rather than outlining a new ‘philosophy of art,’ The Brain-Eye details the singular problems pursued by each of its protagonists. Striking readings of the oeuvres of Delacroix, Seurat, Manet, Gauguin, and Cézanne recount the plural histories of artists who worked to free the differential forces of colour, discovered by Goethe in his Colour Theory, in the name of a “true hallucination” and of a logic proper to the Visual. A rigorous renewal of the philosophical thinking of visual art, The Brain-Eye explores the complex relations between concept and sensation, theory and practice, the discursive and the visual, and draws out the political and philosophical stakes of the aesthetic revolution in modern painting.

Download or read book Kr yer and Paris written by Mette H. Lehmann and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘A lover of light’: in 1912, a French critic used these words to describe the great Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer, who had close ties to the French art scene for more than two decades. Krøyer first visited Paris in 1877, and his many letters clearly show the impact French art had on Krøyer’s own development as a painter, on the artists’ colony in Skagen, and on Danish art history in general. In Krøyer and Paris. French Connections and Nordic Colours, art historians Mette Harbo Lehmann and Dominique Lobstein describe Krøyer’s artistic development from the Golden Age tradition favoured by the Danish academy to Naturalism and the Modern Breakthrough. They show how inspiration from France can be traced in his painting technique and his open-air paintings from Skagen, revealing how French Naturalism made its mark on Krøyer’s distinctive style. Krøyer and Paris has also been published in Danish.

Book Maria Pergay

Download or read book Maria Pergay written by Suzanne Demisch and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a recent auction, after two of Maria Pergay's 1970s steel chairs sold for seven times their high estimate, an observer told The New York Times that was "the most exciting bidding of the sale, because it was fashion." Over Pergay's 50-year-and-counting career, her sophisticated objects, furniture and decor have won her a following and an illustrious clientele that has included Salvador Dali, Pierre Cardin and King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, but they have only recently gained recognition among design collectors, curators and aficionados. Maria Pergay: Between Ideas and Design is the first in-depth survey of the designer's remarkable life and work. Beginning in the 1950s and continuing to the present, it features over 200 photographs of interiors and furniture, archival illustrations from her personal collection--most of which have never before been published--and a candid interview. The end product is equal parts authoritative reference, source of rare insight and aesthetic journey into the lifestyle of the cultural and social elite of the late 60s and early 70s.
