Book Beauty Responsibility and Power

Download or read book Beauty Responsibility and Power written by Leszek Koczanowicz and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the interrelations between aesthetics, ethics, and politics in the framework of pragmatist aesthetics, offering a comprehensive panorama of the ways and fields in which pragmatist aesthetics ties in with vital social and ethical problems of modernity. Most of the contributors refer to the model propounded by Richard Shusterman. Following in Dewey’s footsteps, Shusterman has elaborated and expanded his concept, adding new dimensions to it. The most important supplement is the idea of aesthetic experience being constituted by our bodiliness. In somaesthetics, pragmatism has acquired a new dimension – a fully developed, comprehensive aesthetic theory. Pragmatist aesthetics with its essential notion of the body engages in critical dialogue with many key concepts of modernity which locate the body in social and cultural frameworks. The articles collected in this volume illustrate the complex range of pragmatist aesthetics and its impact on the understanding of crucial issues in social and moral philosophy.

Book Reconstructing Pragmatism

Download or read book Reconstructing Pragmatism written by Chris Voparil and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of Richard Rorty stands in complex relation to the tradition of American pragmatism. On the one hand, his intellectual creativity, lively prose, and bridge-building fueled the contemporary resurgence of pragmatism. On the other, his polemical claims and selective interpretations function as a negative, fixed pole against which thinkers of all stripes define themselves. Virtually all pragmatists on the contemporary scene, whether classical or "new," Deweyan, Jamesian, or Peircean, use Rorty as a foil to justify their positions. The resulting internecine quarrels and divisions threaten to fragment and thwart the tradition's creative potential. More caricatured than understood, the specter of Rorty continues to block the road of inquiry and future development of pragmatism. Reconstructing Pragmatism moves beyond the Rortyan impasse by providing what has been missing for decades: a constructive, non-polemical account of Rorty's relation to classical pragmatism. The first book-length treatment of Rorty's intellectual debt to the early pragmatists, the volume establishes his selective appropriations not as misunderstandings or distortions but a sustained, intentional effort to reconstruct their thinking. Featuring chapters devoted to five key pragmatist thinkers--Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, John Dewey, Josiah Royce, and Jane Addams--the book draws on archival sources and the full scope of Rorty's writings to challenge prevailing misconceptions and caricatures. By elaborating Rorty's still largely untapped reconstructive resources, the book reveals limitations in predominant views of the classical pragmatists in current debates and opens up new modes of understanding pragmatism and why it matters today.

Book The Responsibility Virus

Download or read book The Responsibility Virus written by Roger Martin and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a heroic leader? Or are you a passive follower? Chances are you act like one or the other, and it's doing serious damage to your company, your customers, and your colleagues. The reason behind your harmful behavior? The fear that you'll be held responsible for any failures -which often makes failure the inevitable outcome. Management guru Roger Martin calls this fear of failure and the behavior it causes "The Responsibility Virus." With lively case studies based on real business practice, he shows how the Virus "infects" corporations and nonprofit organizations large and small. No message could be more urgent in today's business climate.Martin lays out a wholly original way of understanding group dynamics. His impassioned belief in the "power of one" will be required reading for any of us who think about how we function in organizations, from the boardroom to the mail room.

Download or read book Uses of the West written by Gunther Hellmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of 'the West' is commonly used in politics, the media, and in the academic world. To date, our idea of 'the West' has been largely assumed and effective, but has not been examined in detail from a theoretical perspective. Uses of 'the West' combines a range of original and topical approaches to evaluate what 'the West' really does, and how the idea is being used in everyday political practice. This book examines a range of uses of 'the West', and traces how 'the West' works in a broad array of conceptual and empirical contexts, ranging from the return of geopolitics - via a critical review of the debates surrounding Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilization thesis - to the question of the future of 'the West'. Analysis extends further to the repercussions of the war on terror on Western democracy and the processes of delineating the Western from the non-Western, as well as observations of the institutional transformations of Western order.

Download or read book Within the Love of God written by Anthony Clarke and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of God is central to theology for it determines the way in which other regions of Christian doctrine are articulated, yet work on this topic in its own right has been occluded recently by treatments of the Trinity or divine passibility. This collection of specially commissioned essays presents major treatments of key themes in the doctrine of God, motivated by but not restricted to the work of Professor Paul S. Fiddes to whom it is offered as a Festschrift. It includes invigorating discussions of the biblical and non-biblical sources for the doctrine of God, and the section on 'Metaphysics and the Doctrine of God' examines some of the most important conceptual questions arising in contemporary theological debate about the being and nature of God, and God's relations to the world. The final section of the book on 'God and Humanity' will be highly relevant to scholars working in the fields of theological anthropology, moral and political theology, on inter-faith relations, on theology and literature, or who are interested in the impact of contemporary science on the doctrine of God. The introduction relates the essays in the book to the work of Professor Fiddes and to wider debates in Christian doctrine. This volume brings together a team of internationally distinguished scholars from a wide range of theological, philosophical, and religious perspectives, and it will stimulate fresh thinking and new debate about this most central of topics in Christian theology.

Book Of Beasts and Beauty

  • Author : Michael Edward Stanfield

Download or read book Of Beasts and Beauty written by Michael Edward Stanfield and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All societies around the world and through time value beauty highly. Tracing the evolutions of the Colombian standards of beauty since 1845, Michael Edward Stanfield explores their significance to and symbiotic relationship with violence and inequality in the country. Arguing that beauty holds not only social power but also economic and political power, he positions it as a pacific and inclusive influence in a country “ripped apart by violence, private armies, seizures of land, and abuse of governmental authority, one hoping that female beauty could save it from the ravages of the male beast.” One specific means of obscuring those harsh realities is the beauty pageant, of which Colombia has over 300 per year. Stanfield investigates the ways in which these pageants reveal the effects of European modernity and notions of ethnicity on Colombian women, and how beauty for Colombians has become an external representation of order and morality that can counter the pathological effects of violence, inequality, and exclusion in their country.

Book The Stone Rejected

Download or read book The Stone Rejected written by Delena Spinelli and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This divinely inspired body of work has been fifteen years in the making...covering three continents and six countries. The revelations contained in The Stone Rejected are God-breathed and purposely prepared for this hour in time. It is the fulfillment of God's word spoken in the book of Habakkuk, which commands, "Write the vision and make it plain upon tablets, that he may run that read it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time but at the end it shall speak and not lie." Today mankind is thirsty for truth and it is because truth is always logical and its foundation is based on pure fact. When applied, it conforms not only to fact but reason. A lie must change or metamorphose to hold its power over one's mind. This is what has happened to the original word of God. It has been changed so many times that it has almost become unrecognizable. Therefore, the sword of truth has been commanded to rise and cut into pieces the body of deception, which stands behind the mask of religion.

Book The Power of Seduction

Download or read book The Power of Seduction written by Jean-Claude Hagège and published by Other Press (NY). This book was released on 2005 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging work demonstrates that beauty truly does come from within. PLASTIC SURGERY IS NOT A MAGIC WAND, DECLARES DR. Jean-Claude Hagege in his critique of the dangerous confusion between beauty and seductiveness. Having seen, spoken with, and operated on hundreds of patients, Hagege offers a unique perspective on the important distinction between formal beauty and true seductive power. Although it can improve our external appearance, the surgeon's scalpel, Hagege cautions us, can do little to enhance our power to seduce. This important warning comes at a time when formal beauty and youth have become an imperative, making our appearance a commodity to be purchased on the marketplace. As Hagege relates the successes and failures of his practice, we learn that our misconceptions about how we should look are informed by the rational part of the brain, the cortex."
