Book excerpt: One of my earliest memories is having a box in our kitchen with food stuffs we were sending to my German father's family in the Baltic region which at that time was part of Germany during WWII. On my mother's side we have a Jewish connection. As a result of these experiences I decided to celebrate this diversity in a story. Most of the Holocaust stories coming from this era are dark. Rather than portray another of these, I wish to portray light in a dark time. This story takes place in Eastern Europe during WWII involving a young Jewish girl and a young German boy. She is suffering retributions on the German side of the Polish border because of her ethnicity, and ultimately finds herself in the Warsaw Ghetto waiting for her extermination. The young German boy finds himself suffering a similiar fate on the Russian side of the border having been enslaved in a labor camp. Their lives finally cross in an underground resistance movement. Both are suspicious of the other because of their opposing ethnicities, but they soon come to a realization that neither of their traditions had ever allowed them to examine. That they are neither Jew nor German only two young people who only want life. Able to set their prejudices aside, they conjoin in an unseemly relationship and make their way through this labyrinth of insanity.

Book Barbershops of America

Download or read book Barbershops of America written by Rob Hammer and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Barbershops are synonymous with great memories, and nostalgic by the smells and feeling of a fresh cut or shave. Barbershops of America is the product of a 7-year journey by Rob Hammer, who traveled to all 50 states of the USA, documenting the disappearing old-school barbershop and the men who were staples of their community. Photographs and stories chronicle the barbershops of old, but also capture the stark contrast that is the "next generation" of traditional barbers. These new-school barbers may look like the polar opposite of what a traditional barber would look like, yet despite the obvious difference in the way these professionals carry themselves, their purpose is consistent: to carry on the tradition that they love."--Back cover

Download or read book Permanent Waves written by Julie Ann Willett and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, beauty shops have been places where women could enjoy the company of other women, exchange information, and share secrets. The female equivalent of barbershops, they have been institutions vital to community formation and social change. But while the beauty shop created community, it also reflected the racial segregation that has so profoundly shaped American society. Links between style, race, and identity were so intertwined that for much of the beauty shop's history, black and white hairdressing industries were largely separate entities with separate concerns. While African American hair-care workers embraced the chance to be independent from white control, negotiated the meanings of hair straightening, and joined in larger political struggles that challenged Jim Crow, white female hairdressers were embroiled in struggles over self-definition and opposition to their industry's emphasis on male achievement. Yet despite their differences, black and white hairdressers shared common stakes as battles were waged over issues of work, skill, and professionalism unique to women's service work. Permanent Waves traces the development of the American beauty shop, from its largely separate racial origins, through white recognition of the "ethnic market," to the present day.
