Download or read book The Seventh Sense written by Peter Kivy and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2003-02-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Sense is the definitive study of the aesthetic theory of the great eighteenth-century philosopher Francis Hutcheson, arguably the founder of the modern discipline of aesthetics, and one of the most important figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. This new edition brings Peter Kivy's seminal work back into print, substantially expanded by the addition of seven essays, which deal primarily with Hutcheson's relation to other thinkers, and his influence on eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century aesthetics. Part I of The Seventh Sense presents a detailed analysis of Hutcheson's aesthetic theory. Part II traces the considerable influence of Hutcheson's theory up to the early years of the nineteenth century. Part III is a new and substantial addition to the original work, collecting Peter Kivy's essays on this topic since the first edition appeared, which deal primarily with Hutcheson, David Hume, and Thomas Reid. Philosophers of art, historians of philosophy, and historians working on eighteenth-century European art and culture will find this new edition an invaluable resource.

Download or read book Fateful Beauty written by Douglas Mao and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Oscar Wilde said he had "seen wallpaper which must lead a boy brought up under its influence to a life of crime," his joke played on an idea that has often been taken quite seriously--both in Wilde's day and in our own. In Fateful Beauty, Douglas Mao recovers the lost intellectual, social, and literary history of the belief that the beauty--or ugliness--of the environment in which one is raised influences or even determines one's fate. Weaving together readings in literature, psychology, biology, philosophy, education, child-rearing advice, and interior design, he shows how this idea abetted a dramatic rise in attention to environment in many discourses and in many practices affecting the lives of the young between the late nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth. Through original and detailed analyses of Wilde, Walter Pater, James Joyce, Theodore Dreiser, Rebecca West, and W. H. Auden, Mao shows that English-language writing of the period was informed in crucial but previously unrecognized ways by the possibility that beautiful environments might produce better people. He also reveals how these writers shared concerns about environment, evolution, determinism, freedom, and beauty with scientists and social theorists such as Herbert Spencer, Hermann von Helmholtz, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, and W.H.R. Rivers. In so doing, Mao challenges conventional views of the roles of beauty and the aesthetic in art and life during this time.

This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society is shaped by the system of education prevailing in the country. Changes in a society are the outcomes of education provided to its citizens. In UNESCO report (1996) 'Learning: The Treasure within', popularly known as Delores report, four pillars of education has been identified as the basic framework for global curriculum. Delors (1996) report states, "Education throughout life is based on four pillars: Learning to know, Learning to do, Learning to live together and Learning to be". Indian culture provides another meaning to these pillars by putting 'Learning to know' as 'Gyanyog' 'Learning to do' as 'Karmayog', 'Learning to live together' as 'Sahyog' and 'Learning to be' as 'Atmasakshatkar' i.e. self- realization which is the ultimate goal of human life.
Download or read book Hermias On Plato Phaedrus 227A 245E written by Dirk Baltzly and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary records, through notes taken by Hermias, Syrianus' seminar on Plato's Phaedrus, one of the world's most influential celebrations of erotic beauty and love. It is the only Neoplatonic commentary on Plato's Phaedrus to have survived in its entirety. Further interest comes from the recorded interventions by Syrianus' pupils - including those by Proclus, his eventual successor as head of the Athenian school, who went on to teach Hermias' father, Ammonius. The first of two volumes of Hermias' commentary, the chapters translated here discuss the argument that the soul can be proved immortal as being the self-moving source of eternal motion. Aristotle explicitly disagreed with Plato on this treatment of the soul and Syrianus, having previously (in a commentary on the Metaphysics) criticised Aristotle severely when he disagreed with Plato, feels obliged here, too, to address the apparent disagreement. This new translation is thus vital for understanding Syrianus' attitude to Aristotle.
Download or read book Maieusis written by Dominic Scott and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maieusis pays tribute to the highly influential work of Myles Burnyeat, whose contributions to the study of ancient philosophy have done much to enhance the profile of the subject around the world. What is distinctive about his work is his capacity to deepen our understanding of the relation between ancient and modern thought, and to combine the best of contemporary philosophy - its insights as well as its rigour - with a deep sensitivity to classical texts. Nineteen of the world's leading experts in the field examine a wide range of topics in ancient philosophy, with a particular focus on Plato. Topics include Socrates and the nature of philosophy, the different aspects of eros in the Symposium, Republic and Phaedrus, the Phaedo's arguments for immortality, wars and warriors in Plato, and the different aspects of the cave allegory in the Republic. .

Download or read book The Politics of the Male Body in Global Sport written by Hans Bonde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danish sport has been associated with Europe and the World; not least through I.P. Muller and Niels Bukh and the Danish Gymnastics revolution with its emphasis on male aesthetics and hygiene in the first half of the twentieth century. At the same time, Denmark has stood apart from Europe in the early moments of its history of sport with the rural revolution of the farming communities as a statement of political independence and assertion. However, during the German occupation of Denmark, Danish sport was part of a European collaboration which characterized a number of the occupied countries not least in the Nordic area. After the Second World War, Denmark embraced international body cultures with other European nations in particular Eastern martial arts. Denmark too, as part of trends in the European region and the world, became caught up in sport as a powerful contemporary political statement. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
