Download or read book Glamour written by Stephen Gundle and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glamour is one of the most tantalizing and bewitching aspects of contemporary culture - but also one of the most elusive. The aura of celebrity, the style of the fashion world, the vanity of the rich and beautiful, and the publicity-driven rites of café society are all imbued with its irresistible magnetism. But what exactly is glamour? Where does it come from? How old is it? And can anyone quite capture its magic? Stephen Gundle answers all these questions and more in this first ever history of the phenomenon, from Paris in the tumultuous final decades of the eighteenth century through to Hollywood, New York, and Monte Carlo in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from Napoleon to Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe, from Beau Brummell to Gianni Versace. Throughout, the book captures the excitement and sex appeal of glamour while exposing its mechanisms and exploring its sleazy and sometimes tragic underside. As Gundle shows, while glamour is exciting and magnetic, its promise is ultimately an illusion that can only ever be partially fulfilled.

Book excerpt: “If there is one book you should read on the Rwandan Genocide, this is it. Tested to the Limit—A Genocide Survivor’s Story of Pain, Resilience, and Hope is a riveting and courageous account from the perspective of a fourteen year- old girl. It’s a powerful story you will never forget.” —Francine LeFrak, founder of Same Sky and award-winning producer “That someone who survived such a horrific, life-altering experience as the Rwandan genocide could find the courage to share her story truly amazes me. But even more incredible is that Consolee Nishimwe refused to let the inhumane acts she suffered strip away her humanity, zest for life and positive outlook for a better future. After reading Tested to the Limit, I am in awe of the unyielding strength and resilience of the human spirit to overcome against all odds.” —Kate Ferguson, senior editor, POZ magazine “Consolee Nishimwe’s story of resilience, perseverance, and grace after surviving genocide, rape, and torture is a testament to the transformative power of unyielding faith and a commitment to love. Download or read book Felder s Comprehensive 2005 Edition written by Nick Felder and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every industry has its standard professional directory -- advertising has its Black Book, manufacturing its Thomas's Register -- except, that is, for architecture...and design...and construction. While there are dozens of smaller directories, each addressing a specific market niche, none speak to all three industries in a comprehensive way. And larger product directories, like Sweets, are advertising driven and therefore incomplete. Felder's Comprehensive is the first pan-industry guide of its kind, and it is many times more comprehensive than the nearest competitor. It is an annual desk reference, directory, and product source guide with more reference information than any other title currently available. It contains thousands of listings of time-sensitive and timeless reference information for anyone involved in the business or practice of architecture, design, design/build, construction, interior design, facility management, and real-estate development. For example, readers can find listings for more than 12,000 manufacturers of furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and materials listed alphabetically, and, most importantly, by product category. Felder's also lists design competitions, domestic and international trade shows, trade publications and other media, trade associations, professional organizations, and more. Most sections are indexed and cross-referenced for easy referral and identification. Felder's is the first truly comprehensive reference guide of its kind for the A/E/C marketplace and is certain to become the industry standard.

Download or read book The New Cadet written by Destiny Jennifer Ringgold and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Cadet is a coming of age story about eighteen year old Alicia Randall, who enters The College of Armed Forces, CAF, as the second class of women. During her first year, she is faced with the rigorous challenges of the Tick Line and attempts to juggle her life within the college while staying connected to her old life. When her life outside the school shatters, Alicia begins walking the plank between falling apart and surviving. What ends up saving Alicia is a new found relationship with a woman, Cathleen, who introduces a variety of books, which expands Alicias awareness and puts her on a new path of self discovery and spiritual awareness. The trials and tribulations from the school extend beyond the Tick Line when Alicia is accused of participating in behavior that is unbecoming of an officer, and it takes every last ounce of strength to survive the school she had promised her brother she would never leave. In using the new concepts Cathleen taught her, it is those ideas that consequently give Alicia the tools for fighting a system and keeping her at a school she conflictingly loves.
