Book excerpt: Actor, producer and director Ben Crystal revisits his acclaimed book on Shakespeare for the 400th anniversary of his death, updating and adding three new chapters. Shakespeare on Toast knocks the stuffing from the staid old myth of the Bard, revealing the man and his plays for what they really are: modern, thrilling, uplifting drama. The bright words and colourful characters of the greatest hack writer are brought brilliantly to life, sweeping cobwebs from the Bard – his language, his life, his world, his sounds, his craft. Crystal reveals man and work as relevant, accessible and alive – and, astonishingly, finds Shakespeare's own voice amid the poetry. Whether you're studying Shakespeare for the first time or you've never set foot near one of his plays but have always wanted to, this book smashes down the walls that have been built up around this untouchable literary figure. Told in five fascinating Acts, this is quick, easy and good for you. Just like beans on toast.

"Let's just live quietly for a decade and forget everything. About me, about that incident that was more trivial than the dust of that seventeen-year-old day... But just like the woodcutter in the fairy tale, who once upon a time told the lady the secret of the wings he had hidden from her when she had less than three children. I will meet him again by chance one day, a little less than a decade later, just nine years later. And when I will see him again, I couldn't help approaching him, despite having erased from my memory and my resolve to live quietly for ten years." *** "Huh! JungWoo, you just come and go to these places on a day like this. Now, I'm sure I'll live for a long time." "Well, I was just passing by and I think I heard that you opened a pub around here a while ago, so I deliberately stopped by to find it. I'm glad you're in the right place," JungWoo replied as he was greeted by his high school classmate, YongJoon as he entered the hall of a chicken pub packed with customers. "Unless it's a busy day like today, I'd like to talk about the old days all night while drinking so that my nose is crooked with you... What can I do? That's how I am..." YongJoon, who was in an apron eagerly serving the customers, made an apologetic look towards JungWoo, who must have come for him. "Okay. I'm busy too, but don't worry about me, just keep doing what you're doing. I heard a rumor that you opened a business, but I couldn't come because of the excuse that I didn't have time, and now I'm here. Now I know where your pub is and look at your face, so that's it. I'll come back next time when I have time, let's make it happen." "But I'm so sad if you just go like this. You sit down for a moment because you can see my handsome face, and I think you'll be at ease if you have a draft beer." YongJoon said as JungWoo stood at the busy entrance, trying to leave in the crowd of customers exiting the store. YongJoon grabbed the sleeve of his coat. "You don't even have a seat, but I'll definitely come back next time." JungWoo visited YongJoon on a busy day and replaced his apologies with an awkward smile because he seemed to be bothering him. Book Transnationalism and Translation in Modern Chinese English French and Japanese Literatures

Download or read book Transnationalism and Translation in Modern Chinese English French and Japanese Literatures written by Ryan Johnson and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of “literary worlds” has become increasingly important in comparative and world literatures. But how are the often-contradictory elements of Eastern and Western literatures to cohere in the new worlds such contact creates? Drawing on the latest work in philosophical logic and analytic Asian philosophy, this monograph proposes a new model of literary worlds that is best suited to comparative literature dealing with Western and East Asian traditions. Unlike much discussion of world literature anchored in North American traditions, featured here is the transnational work of artists, philosophers, and poets writing in English, French, Japanese and Mandarin in the twentieth century. Rather than imposing sharp borders, this book suggests that vague boundaries link Eastern and Western literary works and traditions, and that degrees of distance can better help us to see the multiple dimensions that both distinguish and join together literary worlds East and West. As such, it enables us to grasp not only how East Asian and Western writers translate one another’s works into their own languages and traditions, but also how modern writers East and West modify their own traditions in order to make them fit in the new constellation of literary worlds brought about by the complex flow of literary information across twentieth-century Eurasia.
