Book Positive Options for Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD

Download or read book Positive Options for Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD written by Fiona Marshall and published by Hunter House. This book was released on 2003 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAD is depression caused by lack of natural light. People who have limited exposure to light, and people who live in northern climates are most likely to suffer from SAD, though many people undergo seasonal variations in mood, energy, appetite and sleep. With SAD, sufferers experience an exaggerated version of these changes. Full-blown SAD can be extremely debilitating; the sufferer finds it difficult to carry out normal activities. The disease is often undiagnosed because the symptoms are general enough that they can be attributed to a variety of causes. SAD can be treated with or without medicine, depending on the severity. The book describes helpful changes to eating patterns and vitamin and mineral supplements, ways of adapting your lifestyle to take advantage of the daylight, as well as lightbox therapies. The book distinguishes SAD from classic depression, chronic fatigue, and other illnesses with similar symptoms. It also explains the alarming physical effects of lack of sunlight, which include a greater risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and even cancer. Written in an informal style, with helpful tips and advice, this book is important for anyone who ever questioned their feelings on a cloudy day or during the winter months.

Book Acupuncture Therapy for Neurological Diseases

Download or read book Acupuncture Therapy for Neurological Diseases written by Ying Xia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acupuncture therapy has been practiced in China and other Asian countries for more than two thousand years. Modern clinical research has confirmed the impressive therapeutic effect of acupuncture on numerous human ailments, such as controlling pain, nausea, and vomiting. However, the biological mechanisms of acupuncture are still under debate. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the mechanism of acupuncture therapy is explained by a meridian model. According to this model, acupuncture is believed to treat the diseased organs by modulating two conditions known as Yin and Yang, which represent all the opposite principles that people find in the universe, both inside and outside the human body. Yin and Yang complement each other, and are subjected to changes between each other. The balance of Yin and Yang is thought to be maintained by Qi, an energy substance flowing constantly through the meridian, a network connecting all the organs of the body. The illness, according to this theory, is the temporary dominance of one principle over the other, owing to the blockade of the Qi from flowing through the meridian under certain circumstance. The axiom of “No stagnation, No pain” in TCM summarizes this concept. Thus, the goal of acupuncture treatment is to restore the balance of Yin and Yang conditions in the diseased organ(s). This theory has been considered to be useful to guide this ancient therapy, such as carrying out diagnosis, deciding on the principle, and selecting the acupoints.

Download or read book The Good Mood Diet written by Susan M Kleiner and published by Grand Central Life & Style. This book was released on 2009-02-28 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Kleiner, a leading nutrition authority on eating for strength, has put together a diet that has already been tested in Seattle with a Seattle Good Mood Diet weight loss group program. Bob Condor highlighted the progress of the group in the Seattle Post Intelligencer from Nov. 1, 2004 through April 2005. The author has since received thousands of requests for more information. The idea behind this book is that you can choose healthy foods that both make you feel great and, when eaten according to the plan, help you lose weight. Most diets cause chemical changes in the brain that make the dieter feel depressed. The typical plan is often too low in calories. In this diet, the participants eat feel-good foods with both ideal timing and ideal combinations. People's energy levels soar and participants feel better in days. The key is to combine the right foods-i.e. balance of protein and fats to go with carbs. The plan outlines a diet of about 40 percent carbs, 30 percent proteins, and 30 percent fats and fiber. Participants eat from a list of "feel good foods," and eliminate excessive added sugar in processed foods. Sweets are not taboo, but the authors believes in "eat it only if you love it" when it comes to sweets. For instance, if you love pumpkin pie, have a slice, but maybe skip the crust unless it's fabulous. A bit of chocolate and a glass of red wine a day is okay once you're two weeks into the
