Book Deep France

Download or read book Deep France written by Celia Brayfield and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelist Celia Brayfield had never lived more than a taxi ride from Soho, until one day she decided to take a year off. With the computer and the cats in the back of the car, and the blessing of her student daughter, she drove South until the dawn came up in the Bearn, the most romantic, remote and rustic region of France. Deep France is the diary of a writer's year in a tiny French village, trying to meet her deadlines when a good thunderstorm could blow out the computer and there were always artichokes to pick. It's a walk in teh swashbuckling footsteps of The Three Musketeers and King Henri IV, full of funny and perceptive anecdotes about the year in which France had to face the euro, the World Cup and Le Pen's presidential campaign. 'An author who writes living, breathing novels capable of making us weep and marvel' The Times 'Her writing glitters: the humour is as sharp as a Sabatier knife' Image

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate guide to surrounding yourself with French country style, wherever you are. From deep in the countryside of southwest France comes a comprehensive guide to surrounding yourself with French country style wherever you are. Capturing the beauty and tranquility of the region, interior designer and journalist Sara Silm distills the unique colors, textures, and flavors of this distinctive corner of the world. Inherent in Sara’s detailed knowledge of French country style are philosophical lines drawn between color, temporality, style, sensation, and season, such that every design choice is a contemplation of time and place. Nowhere is this more clearly felt than in her unique color palettes, inspired by the patina of weather-beaten shutters, of local brick and fading roof tiles, violet-hued ice cream, and rolling hills bursting to life in spring. Coupling detailed, practical design knowledge with evocative notes on rural French life and choice recipes, How to French Country offers a path to gentler living and refocusing on all that we hold dear.

Book The Life of Property

Download or read book The Life of Property written by Timothy Jenkins and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longstanding and resilient local ideas of property and practices of inheritance control the destinies of those living in Bearn, a region of south-west France in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. Based on extensive fieldwork and archival research that combines ethnography and intellectual history, this book explores these long-term continuities of a particular way of life within a broad framework. These local ideas have found expression twice at the national level: first, in sociological arguments proposed by Frederique Le Play about the family that shaped debates on social reform and the repair of national identity in the last third of the nineteenth century-debates that would play a part in subsequent European thought and in contemporary European social policy. Second, they fed into late twentieth-century sociological categories through the influential work of Pierre Bourdieu. This study of Bearn illustrates the multi-layered life of local concepts and practices, and the continuing contribution of the local to modern European national history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully researched study is the first to chronicle the history of Allied involvement in the defense of British, French, and Dutch possessions in the Caribbean. The study is extremely well researched and well written. . . . The definitive work in this particular area of historical research, based on all available sources in English, French, and Dutch, published and unpublished. Choice Although few military campaigns were fought in the Caribbean, the region had strategic importance throughout World War II for the United States and its allies. This carefully researched study is the first to chronicle the history of Allied involvement in the defense of British, French, and Dutch possessions in the Caribbean. The first chapter examines the events and diplomacy that led in 1939 to Britain's granting the United States permission to base military facilities in Bermuda, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and to the creation of the Caribbean Sea Frontier. Later chapters detail the troubled course of British-American cooperation as U.S. military commitments--and regional dominance--increased. Also described is the role of the Netherlands, with Britain and the United States, in the defense of the oil and bauxite reserves in the Dutch Caribbean territories, and the friction between Britain and the United States over French Caribbean possessions. The final chapters analyze strategic shifts occuring as a result of the war and influencing postwar settlements negotiated for the region.
