Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bearings and Their Lubrication The aim of this book has been two fold; to present the underlying principles involved in the design of all classes of machinery bearings and to show modern practice in the construction and application of important commercial types. It is believed to be the first treatment of these subjects ever put into book form. The tendency of modern machine design in many fields is toward the use of high speed shafts and spindles and friction reducing forms of bearings. Therefore the present seems a peculiarly fitting time to present these data with the purpose of making them permanently useful to engineers, designers, draftsmen and machinists; in fact to any one who is interested in any way with machinery bearings and their proper lubrication and care. Many of the data have never before been published in any form. Many of the experiments and researches quoted are from European sources and official transactions of technical societies and are not generally known to American readers. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the many courtesies received from engineers and machinery manufacturers and the valuable information furnished by them. Without this hearty cooperation it would have been impossible to have produced this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bearings: Design, Friction, Lubrication, Bearing Metals A journal should be designed of such a size and form that it will run cool, and with practically no wear. The question both of heating and wear is one of friction, and in order for us to understand the princi ples upon which the design of bearings should be based, we must first understand the underlying principles of friction. Friction is defined as that force? Acting between two bodies at their surface of contact, when they are pressed together, which tends to prevent their sliding one upon the other. The energy used in overcoming this force of friction, appears at the rubbing surfaces as heat, and is ordinarily dissipated by conduction through the two bodies. The force of friction, and hence the amount of heat generated under any given circumstances, can be greatly reduced by the introduction of an oily or greasy sub stance between the rubbing surfaces. The oil or grease seems to act in the same way that a great number of minute balls would, reducing the friction and wear, and thus preventing the overheating and couse quent destruction of the parts. On this account, bearings of all kinds are always lubricated. Thus the question of journal friction involves the further question of lubrication. Book Grease Lubrication in Rolling Bearings

Download or read book Grease Lubrication in Rolling Bearings written by Piet M. Lugt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-18 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive book on the science of grease lubrication for roller and needle bearings in industrial and vehicle engineering. Grease Lubrication in Rolling Bearings provides an overview of the existing knowledge on the various aspects of grease lubrication (including lubrication systems) and the state of the art models that exist today. The book reviews the physical and chemical aspects of grease lubrication, primarily directed towards lubrication of rolling bearings. The first part of the book covers grease composition, properties and rheology, including thermal and dynamics properties. Later chapters cover the dynamics of greased bearings, including grease life, bearing life, reliability and testing. The final chapter covers lubrications systems – the systems that deliver grease to the components requiring lubrication. Grease Lubrication in Rolling Bearings: Describes the underlying physical and chemical properties of grease. Discusses the effect of load, speed, temperature, bearing geometry, bearing materials and grease type on bearing wear. Covers both bearing and grease performance, including thermo-mechanical ageing and testing methodologies. It is intended for researchers and engineers in the petro-chemical and bearing industry, industries related to this (e.g. wind turbine industry, automotive industry) and for application engineers. It will also be of interest for teaching in post-graduate courses.

Book Bearings And Bearing Metals

Download or read book Bearings And Bearing Metals written by Anon and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few subjects related to the design or construction of machinery are of greater importance than the subject of bearings. All classes of mechanisms have bearings of some kind and bearings that are properly designed and constructed are a necessity. As every experienced mechanic knows, a poor bearing may tie up a machine or even cause an entire plant to shut down temporarily. Owing to the importance of this subject, designers and mechanics in general should understand the fundamental principles governing bearing design and should know what approved types are in common use on different classes of machinery. This treatise deals exclusively with plain bearings, ball and roller bearings being covered in another book of this series. The types of plain bearings illustrated in a connection with the following chapters were selected to show how designs are modified to suit different conditions, and also practical methods of arranging bearings to insure adequate lubrication and thorough protection against the entrance of any foreign material liable to injure the bearing surfaces. The designs illustrated were taken from actual practice and have proved satisfactory when properly constructed and applied. This treatise contains, in addition to the features mentioned, condensed information on corn- positions of various bearing metals, their properties, the classes of service to which different bearing alloys are adapted, and the general methods of procedure in designing plain bearings to meet different service conditions.

Book Hydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Lubrication written by J. Frene and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-11-10 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic Lubrication is the culmination of over 20 years close, collaborative work by the five authors and discusses the practical use of the formalization of low pressure lubrication. The work concentrates on the developments to journal and thrust bearings and includes subjects such as: • the dynamic behaviour of plain and tilting-pads • the thermal aspects • the positive and negative effects of non-cyclindricity and shape defects resulting from manufacturing or operation • the effects of inertia • the appearance of Taylor's vortices and of turbulence and their repercussions. The book contains an abundance of test results objectively compared with theoretical conclusions and a chapter on "technical considerations" to ensure that draft mechanisms will work satisfactorily under the imposed conditions. Hydrodynamic Lubrication is an essential reference book for future and practising engineers who want to put hydrodynamic and hydrostatic journal bearings and thrust bearings into operation under conditions of total safety.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Friction and Carrying Capacity of Ball and Roller Bearings In order to facilitate the training Of large guns, it is very desir able to reduce the friction at the trunnion bearings. These bear ings are moved infrequently and at very low speeds. They may be, however, subjected to great loads When the gun is fired. These conditions are very different from those usual for bearings in engineering work. For the latter the speed is much greater and the periods of Operation much longer They, however, are not often subject to great loads or to impact.
