Book The Bear Mountain Bridge the Jewel of the Hudson

Download or read book The Bear Mountain Bridge the Jewel of the Hudson written by Walter Rabetz and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Rabetz is an artist who uses the photographic medium to explore a variety of conceptual issues. This particular book is the culmination of four years of devotion to the Bear Mountain Bridge over the Hudson River in New York, and its immediate environs. Photographing both the bridge, and views from the bridge, at all hours of the day, and in all weather throughout the year, Rabetz has decisively and passionately delineated the extraordinary grandeur of the Hudson River Highlands and their relationship to this very welcoming and lovely bridge. "Some of the most stirring images in this series were made during twilight visitations. These nocturnal creations were enhanced by the use of subtle color zones and points of light that glowed and illuminated the darkened territory, where land, water and bridge meet. Rabetz's heightened sensitivity to waning light, allowed him to create a very special set of spectral images, worthy of Turner's most impressionistic interpretations of naval encounters and marine-scapes. There, as in Rabetz's photographs, atmospheric illumination is everything. Rabetz's nocturnal work is sometimes visible only as a subtle glow within a darkened space, announcing the coming of night, as it rushes in to consume everything."- Siegfried Halus, photographer, Santa Fe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hudson River Valley, an invaluable connection between New England and the rest of the colonies during the American Revolution, continues to be a major crossroads today. The Hudson River bridges were architectural marvels of their time. The Bear Mountain Bridge was the longest suspension bridge, while the Newburgh Beacon second span was built with a new type of weathering steel. The bridges were constructed during important times in history. The Bear Mountain Bridge was built as the automobile became an integral part in the country's development, and the Mid-Hudson Bridge was built during the Depression. Labor disputes helped develop labor laws, and world wars led to changes in activity on the bridges. Through historical photographs from sources including the New York State Bridge Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Hudson River Bridges documents how these structures remain beautiful testaments to cooperative efforts during trying times in America's history.

Book excerpt: Bear Mountain, once home to Native Americans and early settlers, had evolved by the 20th century into one of the nations most outstanding public parks. Threatened by quarrying operations and the relocation of Sing Sing Prison, this integral section of the Hudson Highlands was saved by the combined efforts of local citizens and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. Graced by a deep, picturesque lake at the foot of the mountain and accessible by riverboat, train, and automobile, Bear Mountain State Park became a playground for New York City residents. Visionary park management enabled the park to expand, encompassing nature exhibits, a zoo, camps, and restaurants. It continues to be a year-round recreation center featuring hiking, boating, swimming, and cross-country skiing.

Book Bridges of the Mid Hudson Valley

Download or read book Bridges of the Mid Hudson Valley written by Kathryn W. Burke and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hudson River bridges, iconic structures of the New York State Bridge Authority, are the cornerstone of the Mid-Hudson Valley. Opened in 1924, the Bear Mountain Bridge was the first vehicular crossing of the Hudson River, south of Albany. Twentieth-century growth in the Hudson Valley can be traced to each bridge opening, the result of grassroot efforts by local residents. The Mid-Hudson Bridge, named for the region these bridges span, was designated an "Engineering Epic" following the tipping of the east caisson that delayed construction for a year while engineers and laborers struggled to right that caisson in the waters of the Hudson River. The plan for the Rip Van Winkle Bridge required the creation of the New York State Bridge Authority, when funding was otherwise impossible during the Great Depression. Three more bridges were built connecting remaining areas of the Mid-Hudson region. The last crossing became the "twin spans" of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, the New York State Bridge Authority's most traveled span. In 2010, the New York State Bridge Authority gained ownership of the bridge structure of the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian walkway built on the old Poughkeepsie Bridge, which opened for trains in 1889.
