Book Beam Wave Interaction in Periodic and Quasi Periodic Structures

Download or read book Beam Wave Interaction in Periodic and Quasi Periodic Structures written by Levi Schächter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past seven years I have been involved in the investigation of high power microwave sources for accelerator and radar applications. As for many others before me, the starting point of this book was a collection of notes on theoretical topics out of the material I had been working on. The notes were the core of a course for graduate students at Cornell University. When I started to prepare these notes it seemed a fairly straight-forward and not very time-consuming task since I had most of the material well organized. Today, three years after the preparation of the first notes, I can only wonder how naive this thought was. Most of my work was oriented towards analytic and quasi-analytic tech niques for the investigation of the interaction of an electron beam with elec tromagnetic waves. These topics are presented in Chaps. 4 and 6. However, for a systematic elaboration of these topics it was necessary to provide some general background, therefore parts of what are today Chaps. 2, 3, and 5 were prepared. Related topics of acceleration concepts were also prepared to some extent but I ran out of time and the material (Chap. 8) was not delivered. In the meantime, various sections of this book were taught at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University. In the last version I included a discussion on free electron lasers (Chap. 7).

Book Crystal Channeling and Its Application at High Energy Accelerators

Download or read book Crystal Channeling and Its Application at High Energy Accelerators written by Valery M. Biryukov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-04-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nature performs not hing vainly, and makes nothing unnecessary" Aristotle Interest in the passage of charged particles through crystals first appeared at the beginning of this century following experiments on x-ray diffraction in crystallattices, which provided the proof of an ordered distribution of atoms in a crystal. Stark [1] put forward the hypothesis that certain directions in a crystal should be relatively transparent to charged particles. These first ideas on the channeling of charged particles in crystals were forgotten but became topical again in the early 1960s when the channeling effect was rediscovered by computer simulation [2] and in experiments [3] that revealed anomalously long ion ranges in crystals. The orientational ef fects during the passage of charged particles through crystals have been found for a whole range of processes characterized by small impact parameters for collisions between particles and atoms: nuclear reactions, large-angle scatter ing, energy losses. Lindhard explained the channeling of charged particles in crystals [4]. The results of the numerous investigations into the channeling of low-energy (amounting to several MeV) charged particles in crystals have been summarized in several monographs and reviews [5~8l.

This book was released on 2021-12-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the latest research avenues in the field of high-power microwave sources and metamaterials A stand-alone follow-up to the highly successful High Power Microwave Sources and Technologies, the new High Power Microwave Sources and Technologies Using Metamaterials, demonstrates how metamaterials have impacted the field of high-power microwave sources and the new directions revealed by the latest research. Providing contributions from multiple institutions that discuss theoretical concepts as well as experimental results in slow wave structure design, this edited volume also discusses how traditional periodic structures used since the 1940s and 1950s can have properties that, until recently, were attributed to double negative metamaterial structures. The book also includes: A thorough introduction to high power microwave oscillators and amplifiers, as well as how metamaterials can be introduced as slow wave structures and other components Comprehensive explorations of theoretical concepts in dispersion engineering for slow wave structure design, including multi-transmission line models and particle-in-cell code virtual prototyping models Practical discussions of experimental measurements in dispersion engineering for slow wave structure design In-depth examinations of passive and active components, as well as the temporal evolution of electromagnetic fields High Power Microwave Sources and Technologies Using Metamaterials is a perfect resource for graduate students and researchers in the areas of nuclear and plasma sciences, microwaves, and antennas.

Book Interaction of Modulated Electron Beams with Open Periodic Structures

Download or read book Interaction of Modulated Electron Beams with Open Periodic Structures written by Andrew Richard Neureuther and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three electromagnetic boundary value problems involving the interaction of modulated electron beams with open periodic structures are studied theoretically with particular emphasis on producing Smith-Purcell radiation. The problem of an ideal sheet electron beam coupled to a sinusoidally-modulated reactance surface is considered. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate the influence of the synchronism or forced resonance condition on the interaction and to point out how the Brillouin diagram can be used to predict some of the quantitative as well as most of the qualitative properties of this influence. The more practical three dimensional problem of an ideal beam coupled to the narrow tape helix is treated rigorously. The results of this analysis give quantitative estimates of the interaction strength obtainable experimentally. Finally it is pointed out that the prescribed source model is limited in accurately predicting its own length of validity and in describing surface wave coupling. (Author).

Book Wave Motion in One Dimensional Periodic Waveguides

Download or read book Wave Motion in One Dimensional Periodic Waveguides written by Lavesh Rughunanan and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis concerns the development of a general theory for the wave behaviour in one-dimensional, periodic, mono-coupled waveguides. The theory is also extended to waveguides where the effects of near-field waves incident on the periodic discontinuity are negligible (quasi-mono-coupled). Systems of coupled waveguides are then considered with locking and veering in general one-dimensional periodic waveguides demonstrated, and the general solution for two periodically coupled beam systems derived. Solutions for the propagation constants in quasi-mono-coupled waveguides are derived in terms of the phase of the transmission coefficient and another phase variable. Expressions for the bounds of band-gaps, attenuation and bandwidth are presented in terms of these variables. The mechanism of band-gap formation is proposed in terms of transmission at the discontinuity, with a discussion on the mechanisms of Bragg-scattering and local-resonance. Results show that Bragg-scattering and localresonance are both described by the transmission coefficient phase, and are special cases of the more general wave interaction at a periodic discontinuity. The behaviour of periodically coupled one-dimensional waveguides is investigated. Locking and veering is demonstrated for the case of periodic structures where, for cases where there are two or more branches of the dispersion curves, as frequency increases, two propagation constants lock, forming complex conjugate pairs when the uncoupled propagation constants intersect with slopes of opposite sign. Veering, where the coupled propagation constants are repelled from each other, occurring when the slopes intersect with the same sign. The case of two periodically coupled Euler-Bernoulli beams is discussed. The dispersion relation is derived and analysed with expressions for the bounds, bandwidth and nature of band-gaps presented. For a given frequency, if the intersections of the uncoupled propagation constants with the Brillouin Zone occur on the same side of the Brillouin Zone, then all solutions are propagating and no band-gap forms. If they intersect at opposite ends, all solutions are evanescent and a band-gap is guaranteed to form. A parametric study demonstrates that to maximise the bandwidth of this band-gap, one beam must be heavier and less stiff than the other. Experimental measurements of propagation constants for a beam with periodic masses and two beams periodically coupled with springs were taken, demonstrating good agreement between experiment and theory.
