Book Beam Position Monitor System for the Proton Storage Ring at LAMPF

Download or read book Beam Position Monitor System for the Proton Storage Ring at LAMPF written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-current Proton Storage Ring (PSR) is being constructed at Los Alamos to accumulate intense pulses of 800-MeV protons from LAMPF for delivery to neutron production targets. The beam's transverse location in the injection channel, ring, and extraction channel will be determined by a beam position monitor (BPM) system. The beam will be detected by stripline sensors that generate 4-quadrant position signals from the spectral components of the beam. Sixty sensors are planned for the installation, with their outputs selected by broadband RF multiplexers. The sensor outputs are processed by a differential phase correlator detector to produce an analog signal proportional to the position of the beam centroid. Digital conversion and processing will give overall resolution of the horizontal and vertical position of the beam at each sensor location to +-2 mm. The monitor will operate over the intensity range of 3 x 108 protons/bunch to 5 x 1013 protons/bunch. The beam-position system contains CAMAC-based instrumentation for display in three formats, including an azimuth histogram, a time plot, and a numerical readout. The monitor system also includes a microprocessor-based check and exerciser unit to serve as a design aid and maintenance tool.

Book A Simple Beam Position Monitor System for CEBAF

Download or read book A Simple Beam Position Monitor System for CEBAF written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CEBAF is a recirculating linac where the beam passes several times through the linac structures. As a result, up to five beams of different energies may be present in the same linac vacuum chambers simultaneously. One method of distinguishing between the beams involves modulating the current for a time interval of less than one revolution period. In this paper, a very simple low cost beam position monitor system based on the detection of this modulation is presented. Initial results indicated that 1mm displacements for beam currents of 1 micro-amp can be measured. With the incorporation of several improvements to the present monitor design, the sensitivity is expected to be increased to 1 mm for a 100 nA beam.

Book Beam Position Monitoring in the AGS Linac to Booster Transfer Line

Download or read book Beam Position Monitoring in the AGS Linac to Booster Transfer Line written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beam position monitor system has been developed and used in the commissioning of Brookhaven's Linac to Booster transfer line. This line transports a chopped, RF modulated H- beam from the 200 MeV Linac to the AGS Booster. Over a 15dB dynamic range in beam current, the position monitor system provides a real-time, normalized position signal with an analog bandwidth of about 20 MHz. Seven directional coupler style pickups are installed in the line with each pickup sensing both horizontal and vertical position. Analog processing electronics are located in the tunnel and incorporate the amplitude modulation to phase modulation normalization technique. To avoid interference from the 200 MHz linac RF system, processing is performed at 400 MHz. This paper will provide a system overview and report results from the commissioning experience.

Book Beam Position Monitor Readout and Control in the SLC Linac

Download or read book Beam Position Monitor Readout and Control in the SLC Linac written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beam position monitoring system has been implemented in the first third of the SLC linac which provides a complete scan of the trajectory on a single beam pulse. The data is collected from the local micro-computers and viewed with an updating display at a console or passed on to application programs. The system must operate with interlaced beams so the scans are also interlaced, providing each user with the ability to select the beam, the update rate, and the attenuation level in the digitizing hardware. In addition each user calibrates the hardware for his beam. A description of the system architecture will be presented. 6 refs., 4 figs.

Book Design and Performance of the Booster Beam Position Monitor System

Download or read book Design and Performance of the Booster Beam Position Monitor System written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumentation has bean built to measure heavy ion and proton beam orbits over an intensity range of 2 [times] 10[sup 10] to 1.5 [times] 10[sup l3] particles per pulse. Twenty-two horizontal and 24 vertical pairs of electrostatic Pickup Electrodes (PUEs), each with a built-in test port, are interfaced with wideband, gain selectable front end electronics. The resulting real-time signals are linearly related (both in amplitude and temporal response) to the sum and difference of the charge induced on each electrode due to passing beam. PUE signals (or their sum and difference) are available at any detector location for use by other Booster systems e.g., the Tune Meter, Transverse Damper, Radial loop control, etc. Data acquistion electronics at each, location integrate the processed front end signals over a selectable number of bunches, then digitize and transmit the integrated sum and difference to the host computer. Data normalization is done in the software, which also provides various orbit acquisition and display options to the user. This paper will describe the Booster Beam Position Monitor system, its performance objectives and the key design aspect used to meet these objectives. In addition, initial results will be presented.

Book Performance of the Beam Position Monitor System of the Final Focus TestBeam

Download or read book Performance of the Beam Position Monitor System of the Final Focus TestBeam written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system for the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) at SLAC is designed to meet challenging specifications in the areas of single-pulse resolution, ab initio installation accuracy, and time-stability of BPM electrical centroids. We review the tolerances on these quantities and the technical choices made to achieve same, and detail the results of several studies of the actual performance of the system. These results are then related to the BPM system requirements for a future high-energy ee− linear collider.

Book The AGS Booster Beam Position Monitor System

Download or read book The AGS Booster Beam Position Monitor System written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To accelerate both protons and heavy ions, the AGS Booster requires a broadband (multi-octave) beam position monitoring system with a dynamic range spanning several orders of magnitude (2 x 101° to 1.5 x 1013 particles per pulse). System requirements include the ability to acquire single turn trajectory and average orbit information with {plus minus} 0.1 mm resolution. The design goal of {plus minus} 0.5 mm corrected accuracy requires that the detectors have repeatable linear performance after periodic bakeout at 300 °C. The system design and capabilities of the Booster Beam Position Monitor will be described, and initial results presented. 7 refs., 5 figs.
