Book excerpt: The multiple beam induction linac experiment (MBE-4) was built to study the accelerator physics of the low energy, electrostatically focussed end of a driver for heavy ion inertial confinement fusion. In this machine four beams of Cs ions are accelerated through 24 common induction gaps while being focussed in separate AG focussing channels. Each channel consists of a syncopated FODO lattice of 30 periods. We report results of the most recent studies of the transverse beam dynamics of a single drifting (180 keV) beam in this machine. The dependence of the emittance on the zero-current phase advance shows systematic variations which may be understood in the light of previous theoretical work on this topic. This result, unique to the beam parameters of a linac for heavy ion fusion, will be discussed in the context of its implications for a driver design. In addition we will discuss recent measurements of the motion of the beam centroid through the linac. These measurements, coupled with simulations, have proven to be a powerful tool in determining the presence of misalignment errors in the lattice of the accelerator. 6 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: A standard design for heavy ion fusion drivers under study in the US is an induction linac with electrostatic focusing at low energy and magnetic focusing at higher energy. The need to focus the intense beam to a few-millimeter size spot at the deuterium-tritium target establishes the emittance budget for the accelerator. Economic and technological considerations favor a larger number of beams in the low-energy, electrostatic-focusing section than in the high-energy, magnetic-focusing section. Combining four beams into a single focusing channel is a viable option, depending on the growth in emittance due to the combining process. Several significant beam dynamics issues that are, or have been, under active study are discussed: large space charge and image forces, beam wall clearances, halos, alignment, longitudinal instability, and bunch length control.

Book excerpt: An experimental induction linac, called MBE-4, has been constructed to demonstrate acceleration and current amplification of multiple heavy ion beams. This work is part of a program to study the use of such an accelerator as a driver for heavy ion inertial fusion. MBE-4 is 16m long and accelerates four space-charge-dominated beams of singly-charged cesium ions, in this case from 200 keV to 700 keV, amplifying the current in each beam from 10mA by a factor of nine. Construction of the experiment was completed late in 1987 and we present the results of detailed measurements of the longitudinal beam dynamics. Of particular interest is the contribution of acceleration errors to the growth of current fluctuations and to the longitudinal emittance. The effectiveness of the longitudinal focusing, accomplished by means of the controlled time dependence of the accelerating fields, is also discussed. 4 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

A research program is underway at LBL to develop accelerators that test all these features with the final goal of producing an ion beam capable of heating matter to approx. 70 eV. This paper presents a discussion of some properties of induction linacs and how they may be used for HIF research. Physics designs of the High Temperature Experiment (HTE) and the Multiple Beam Experiment (MBE) accelerators are presented along with initial concepts of the MBE induction units.

Book excerpt: Since October 1983, most of the research in the US on heavy ion fusion (HIF) has been devoted to the physics and technology of the induction linac driver. The economic viability of the method was confirmed in the recent HIF Systems Assessment. Research at Berkeley comprises three experimental activities: the multiple-beam experiment, MBE-4, which accelerates four parallel, separately focused beams of cesium ions from 0.2 to 1 MeV; amplification of the beam power by a factor of nearly 40 is observed; development of a 16-beam, pulsed, 2-MV injector; and a single beam transport experiment (SBTE) for studying collective phenomena in ion beam transport. In addition, a major activity has been the development of a physics and engineering design for a larger experiment to test (in a scaled way) almost all of the manipulations needed in a full-scale driver. A complicating feature in the design is the combining of beams (in sets of four to one); the penalty in collectively enhanced emittance growth must be balanced against the cost savings gained in a driver. 12 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Elise is an electrostatically focused heavy-ion accelerator being designed and constructed at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The machine is intended to be the first half of the four-beam Induction Linac Systems Experiment (ILSE), which ultimately will test the principal beam dynamics issues and manipulations of induction heavy-ion drivers for inertial fusion. Elise will use an existing 2 MeV injector and will accelerate space-charge-dominated pulses to greater than 5 MeV. The design objective of Elise is to maximize the output beam energy within the fixed project budget while allowing for adequate beam diagnostics, flexibility in the acceleration schedule, and beam parameters suitable for ILSE and the experimental program. We review the design equations and ''rules of thumb'' used for choosing beam and lattice parameters for heavy-ion induction accelerators, and we discuss incorporating these relations in a spreadsheet program that generates internally consistent lattice layouts and acceleration schedules. These designs have been tested using a one-dimensional (1-D) particle simulation code, SLIDE, a 3-D fluid/envelope code, CIRCE, and a 3-D particle-in-cell code WARP3D. Sample results from these calculations are presented. Results from these dynamics codes are also shown illustrating sensitivities to beam and lattice errors and testing various strategies for longitudinal confinement of the beam ends.

Book excerpt: The Advent of laser-ion-guiding in the Advanced test Accelerator along with the development of accelerator cavities optimized with respect to beam breakup coupling impedence now make it possible to consider a new class of high current, high emergy linear induction accelerators. The control of the beam breakup and other instabilities by laser guiding and by various magnetic focusing schemes will be discussed along with the scaling laws for the design of such machines to minimize the growth of the beam breakup instability. Many linacs, particularly induction linacs are limited in performance by the beam breakup (BBU) instability. The instability is found in two forms. In the first form the accelerating cavities communicate with one another through interaction with the beam and through propagation of cavity fields through the accelerator structure. In the second form which is the more virulent of the two, the cavities couple to each other only through their interactions with the beam. It is this second form of PPU that will be discussed in this paper.

Book excerpt: The National Energy Strategy calls for a demonstration IFE power plant by the year 2025. The cornerstone of the plan to meet this ambitious goal is research and development for heavy-ion driver technology. A series of successes indicates that the technology being studied by the HIFAR Group -- the induction accelerator -- is a prime candidate for further technology development toward this long-range goal. The HIFAR program addresses the generation of high-power, high-brightness beams of heavy ions; the understanding of the scaling laws that apply in this hitherto little-explored physics regime; and the validation of new, potentially more economical accelerator strategies. Key specific elements to be addressed include: fundamental physical limits of transverse and longitudinal beam quality; development of induction modules for accelerators, along with multiple-beam hardware, at reasonable cost; acceleration of multiple beams, merging of the beams, and amplification of current without significant dilution of beam quality; final bunching, transport, and focusing onto a small target. In 1992, the HIFAR Program was concerned principally with the next step toward a driver: the design of ILSE, the Induction Linac Systems Experiments. ILSE will address most of the remaining beam-control and beam-manipulation issues at partial driver scale. A few parameters -- most importantly, the line charge density and consequently the size of the ILSE beams -- will be at full driver scale. A theory group closely integrated with the experimental groups continues supporting present-day work and looking ahead toward larger experiments and the eventual driver. Highlights of this long-range, driver-oriented research included continued investigations of longitudinal instability and some new insights into scaled experiments with which the authors might examine hard-to-calculate beam-dynamics phenomena.

Book excerpt: The multiple-beam induction linac approach to a heavy ion fusion driver features continuous current amplification along the accelerator and a minimum of transverse beam manipulation from source to pellet. Current amplification and bunch length control require careful shaping of the accelerating voltages. This driver approach exploits developments in electron induction linac technology that have occurred within the last 15 years at LBL, LLNL and NBS. MBE-4 is a four beam induction linac that models much of the accelerator physics of the electrostatically focused section of a considerably longer induction accelerator. Four parallel Cs beams are electrostatically focussed and will be accelerated from 200 keV to approximately one MeV when the experiment is complete in the spring of 1987. The current in each of the four beams will increase from 10 to 40 mA due to both increase in beam speed and shortening of the bunch length. Results of experiments with the injector and first eight accelerating gaps are presented.
