Book Native Athletes in Sport Society

Download or read book Native Athletes in Sport Society written by C. Richard King and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though many Americans might be aware of the Olympian and football Hall of Famer Jim Thorpe or of Navajo golfer Notah Begay, few know of the fundamental role that Native athletes have played in modern sports: introducing popular games and contests, excelling as players, and distinguishing themselves as coaches. The full breadth and richness of this tradition unfolds in Native Athletes in Sport and Society, which highlights the accomplishments of Indigenous athletes in the United States and Canada but also explores what these accomplishments have meant to Native American spectators and citizens alike. ø Here are Thorpe and Begay as well as the Winnebago baseball player George Johnson, the Snohomish Notre Dame center Thomas Yarr, the Penobscot baseball player Louis Francis Sockalexis, and the Lakota basketball player SuAnne Big Crow. Their stories are told alongside those of Native athletic teams such as the NFL?s Oorang Indians, the Shiprock Cardinals (a Navajo women?s basketball team), the women athletes of the Six Nations Reserve, and the Fort Shaw Indian Boarding School?s girls? basketball team, who competed in the 1904 World?s Fair. Superstars and fallen stars, journeymen and amateurs, coaches and gatekeepers, activists and tricksters appear side by side in this collection, their stories articulating the issues of power and possibility, difference and identity, representation and remembrance that have shaped the means and meaning of American Indians playing sport in North America.

Download or read book Sublime Light written by Cécile R. Ganteaume and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book dedicated to the contemporary Diné artist, featuring 80 stunning tapestries and essays exploring her life and legacy. Discover the unique weaving traditions of the Navajo Nation in this joyous celebration of Indigenous art and history. A fifth-generation weaver, DY Begay’s transformative tapestries reflect her family tradition, her Diné identity, and the natural beauty of the Navajo Nation reservation where she grew up. The first book devoted to Begay's career, Sublime Light reveals the evolution of her work with 80 gorgeous tapestries created between 1965 and 2022. To fully reveal her life and influences, the book draws on Begay’s journals, family photographs, and imagery from the Tselani, Arizona landscape that inspires her work. Begay first learned to weave watching her mother and grandmother process wool from the family sheep herd using tools made by male relatives and working at their looms. Over the years, she pushed her creativity and began combining her ancestral weaving techniques with modern design, as well as blending colors historically used in Navajo weaving with unconventional dyes made from fungi, food, and non-native flowers. Much of Begay’s deeply personal work pays homage to Navajo land— its red-streaked cliffs, indigo sunrises, dreamy desert tones—as well as her extraordinary lineage. On every page, Sublime Light enchants.

Book Thomas H Begay and the Navajo Code Talkers

Download or read book Thomas H Begay and the Navajo Code Talkers written by Alysa Landry and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life story of this World War II Navajo Code Talker introduces middle-grade readers to an unforgettable person and offers a close perspective on aspects of Navajo (or Diné) history and culture. Thomas H. Begay was one of the young Navajo men who, during World War II, invented and used a secret, unbreakable communications code based on their native Diné language to help win the war in the Pacific. Although the book includes anecdotes from other code talkers, its central narrative revolves around Begay. It tells his story, from his birth near the Navajo reservation, his childhood spent herding sheep, his adolescence in federally mandated boarding schools, and ultimately, his decision to enlist in the US Marine Corps. Alysa Landry relies heavily on interviews with Begay, who, as of this writing, is in his late nineties and one of only three surviving code talkers. Begay’s own voice and sense of humor make this book particularly significant in that it is the only Code Talker biography for young readers told from a soldier’s perspective. Begay was involved with the book every step of the way, granting Landry unlimited access to his military documents, personal photos, and oral history. Additionally, Begay’s family contributed by reading and fact-checking the manuscript. This truly is a unique collaborative project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Santa Fe PI’s search for stolen Native American bones unearths dark deeds and a fresh murder in a gripping mystery “reminiscent of Tony Hillerman” (Booklist). Private investigator Joshua Croft never expected to see Daniel Begay again after he helped the elderly Native American fend off a group of abusive rednecks. But now the old man has come to Croft’s Santa Fe office with a bizarre request: He wants the detective to recover human bones that have been missing since 1925. The skeleton of Ganado, a Navajo warrior, was stolen decades earlier by Dennis Lessing, who found them while he was searching for oil on sacred Native American land. Less than a month later, Lessing was killed, and Ganado’s bones have not been seen since. What at first seems like a relatively harmless—if hopeless—pursuit grows graver by the hour, as Croft’s search takes him from the halls of an El Paso university to the hard lands of the Navajo Reservation. But when his digging into the past starts to uncover other skeletons besides Ganado’s, Croft may be the next one to fall victim to someone desperate enough to kill to keep secrets buried.
