Book excerpt: When Senator Kitzi Camden retired, she dreamed of doing what she loved best—beading. She certainly didn’t plan to try her hand at amateur sleuthing. But trouble seems to find her wherever she goes—even in her own backyard. The Old Camden Family Manse in Austin, home to Kitzi and her mother, is eight thousand square feet of magnificently restored Southern splendor. And Kitzi and her best friend have the place sparkling like a jewel for the upcoming Bead Tea charity event. But the mood abruptly changes when a crafty cousin threatens to take over the Manse, leaving Kitzi and her mother on the street. Then her cousin’s beady-eyed partner is found dead in a Dumpster nearby. There are plenty of suspects at the Tea—and Kitzi’s one of them. Now, with the help of her beau Nate, she has to save her home and reputation—and tie up the loose ends before the murderer draws a bead on her. “There’s a legacy of strong Texas women, and I’d like to welcome Kitzi Camden to the ranks. She’s smart, funny, and shoots from the mouth.” –Ann Richards, former Texas governor and author of I’m Not Slowing Down

Download or read book The Bead Collector written by Sefi Atta and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new novel from Wole Soyinka prize-winning author of Everything Good Will Come. Lagos, January 1976, six years after the Nigerian Civil War. A new military regime has been in power for six months, but rumors are spreading that a countercoup is imminent. At an art exhibition in the affluent Ikoyi neighborhood, Remi Lawal, a Nigerian woman who runs her own greeting-card shop, meets Frances Cooke, who introduces herself as an American art dealer, in Nigeria to buy rare beads. They become friends and over the next few weeks confide in each other about their aspirations, loyalties, marriage, motherhood?and Nigeria itself, as hospitable Remi welcomes the enigmatic Frances into her world. Remi’s husband, Tunde, naturally suspects Frances—like any American in Lagos—of gathering intelligence for the CIA, yet she is unconvinced. Cynical about the country’s unending instability, and alienated by the shallowness of the city’s elite, she willingly shares her views with Frances. But the February 13 assassination of General Muhammed prompts Remi to reconsider one particular conversation with her new acquaintance in a different light. Her discouragement overcome by a reawakened sense of patriotism, she begins to doubt that the bead collector is who she claims to be. With her signature subtlety and wit, Sefi Atta recasts the international espionage tale by bringing the intrigue and politics of family life to the fore. The story of a brief friendship, The Bead Collector reveals one Nigerian mother’s yearning—amid legacies of conflict and uncertainty—to help build her country from home.

The red leather covering is well worn, and the locking clasp that once kept my secrets safe from the world is missing. There is duct tape on the binding, and the page edges have yellowed over time, but it is, after all, almost fifty years old. A well-worn Polaroid photo slips out... I remember vividly the night it was taken, oh, to be held in his strong arms. He was beautiful then-his skin tanned to a golden brown, his jet black hair neatly combed straight back, how it felt when he gently kissed the back of my neck and sang softly into my ear...

Download or read book Dover written by Vera I Evison and published by English Heritage Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Buckland, Dover, was discovered when a new housing estate was being constructed in 1951. It was excavated by Professor Evison between 1951 and 1953. The cemetery of some 170 graves dates from the late fifth to the middle of the eighth century. Professor Evison's expertise in the study of glass, jewellery and weapons ensures that there is a penetrating analysis of this important site and interesting ideas are proposed for the layout and phasing of the cemetery. A comprehensive discussion of the finds from the graves reveals that, although the Buckland cemetery belongs to the period of pagan tradition of burial with grave goods, there is some evidence of Christian influences and rites. Contact with Frankish territory in France, Belgium and the Rhineland seems to have been maintained throughout the period of use of the cemetery and Frankish grave goods formed an important element in the material culture of the people buried there. However, by the late sixth century local Kentish craftsmen were producing a significant amount of the jewellery found in the graves. Professor Evison places the Buckland cemetery in its local context by examining contemporary finds from other sites in the area around Dover.
