Download or read book Beach Trafficability Testing with Off road Materials Handling Equipment Anzio Beach Little Creek Virginia written by Edgar S. Rush and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field test program reported on herein was conducted by the U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center with technical assistance from the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The objectives of the program were to (a) make a quantitative evaluation of the mobility characteristics of three rough terrain forklift trucks when operating over sand beaches, (b) validate or revise the current mobility prediction formulas to cover larger, heavier, and more powerful vehicles, and (c) establish specific design relations for vehicles being developed for materials handling, which will ensure the attainment of the required mobility. Maximum drawbar pull, maximum slope negotiable, and towed motion resistance tests were conducted on the beach backshore and dune areas.
Download or read book Sandy Beach Morphodynamics written by Derek Jackson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandy beaches represent some of the most dynamic environments on Earth and examining their morphodynamic behaviour over different temporal and spatial scales is challenging, relying on multidisciplinary approaches and techniques. Sandy Beach Morphodynamics brings together the latest research on beach systems and their morphodynamics and the ways in which they are studied in 29 chapters that review the full spectrum of beach morphodynamics. The chapters are written by leading experts in the field and provide introductory level understanding of physical processes and resulting landforms, along with more advanced discussions.

Download or read book Beach Nourishment and Protection written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-12-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many coastal communities have built structures at their beaches and added quantities of sand in contoured designs to combat erosion. Are such beach nourishment projects technically and economically sound? Or are they nothing more than building sand castles, as critics claim? Beach Nourishment and Protection provides a sound technical basis for decision-making, with recommendations regarding the utility of beach nourishment, the appropriate role of federal agencies, responsibility for cost, design methodology, and other issues. This volume: Examines the economic and social role of beaches, the history of beach nourishment projects, and management strategies for shore protection. Discusses the role of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies, with a close-up look at the federal flood insurance program. Explores the state of the art in project design and prediction of outcomes, including the controversy over the use of traditional and nontraditional shore protection devices. Addresses what is known about the environmental impacts of beach nourishment. Identifies what outcomes should be targeted for continued monitoring by project officials. Beach Nourishment and Protection provides insight into the technical, economic, environmental, and policy implications of beach nourishment and protection, with examples and suggested research directions.

Download or read book Pacific Northwest Coastal Environments written by Ronald C. Chaney and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Northwest Coastal Environments: Earthquakes and Sea Level Rise investigates the potential impacts of changes in global sea level by examining historical sea and land levels, projected future levels, and by determining how those changes may affect future tides and storm surges to inform their potential to cause harmful impacts. This region has a unique interaction of land, sea, and tectonics. Climate and tectonic change can initiate issues ranging from an inundation of coastal areas due to a combination of sea level rise, vertical land movement, and potential tsunami. This combination of factors leads to the retreat of coastal shorelines due to erosion caused by both tidal action and wave runup. Specific topics explored in this book include the following: Coastal erosion rates along the Pacific Northwest coastline from Eureka, California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Sea cliff retreat mitigation techniques looking at both the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques. Interaction between subduction zone earthquakes and vertical land movement. Wave characterization in both deep and shallow water. In addition, the book looks at both wave refraction and reflection along the coastline. Tides along the Pacific Northwest coastline and their role in calculating the relative sea level and its effect on coastal erosion.

Download or read book Guidelines on recreational water quality Volume 1 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of coastal, estuarine and freshwater recreational environments has significant benefits for health and well-being, including rest, relaxation, exercise, cultural and religious practices, and aesthetic pleasure, while also providing substantial local, regional and national economic benefits. These guidelines focus on water quality management for coastal and freshwater environments to protect public health. The guidelines: 1. describe the current state of knowledge about the possible adverse health impacts of various forms of water pollution; and2. set out recommendations for setting national health-based targets, conducting surveillance and risk assessments, putting in place systems to monitor and control risks, and providing timely advice to users on water safety. These guidelines are aimed at national and local authorities, and other entities with an obligation to exercise due diligence relating to the safety of recreational water sites. They may be implemented in conjunction with other measures for water safety (such as drowning prevention and sun exposure) and measures for environmental protection of recreational water use sites.
