Book Beach Changes at Misquamicut Beach Rhode Island 1962 1973

Download or read book Beach Changes at Misquamicut Beach Rhode Island 1962 1973 written by Robert W. Morton and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beach profile data were collected at profile lines on Misquamicut Beach between November 1962 and June 1973. The data were examined for temporal and spatial patterns and variability along the beach face, as well as to identify and assess the forces which influence beach behavior. Misquamicut represents a typical barrier beach. It is sheltered from all directions except the south and southeast with wave climate modified by Fisher's Island, Long Island, and Block Island. Nearshore bathymetry and a submarine trough in Block Island Sound also modify the wave pattern and intensity. The focusing of energy varies depending on wave direction, but is generally most intense in the center of the beach. Regression analyses on above mean sea level volume versus time indicate a net accretional trend on the beach. There appears to be a seasonal pattern to erosion/accretion cycles on Misquamicut Beach. In general, erosion is accelerated from late autumn to early spring, principally as a result of winter storm events, while accretion occurs from late spring to early fall. However, nonseasonal storm events frequently interrupt and obscure this pattern. The beach responds in a similar manner to most storms regardless of the direction of the storm track. The average above mean sea level volume changes attributable to storms range from 5 to 10 cubic meters per meter of beach length, which is small in comparison to open ocean beaches (as those studied on Cape Cod) where changes were frequently on the order of 50 cubic meters per meter.

Book BEACH CHANGES AT WEST HAMPTON BEACH NEW YORK 1962 1973

Download or read book BEACH CHANGES AT WEST HAMPTON BEACH NEW YORK 1962 1973 written by Allan E. DeWall and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repetitive surveys of the above MSL beach were made along 20 profile lines at Westhampton Beach, on the south shore of Long Island, New York, from 1962 to 1973. After the study had begun, a large groin field (15 groins) with associated beach fill was constructed in the middle of the area being surveyed. The data show that shoreline erosion of 2 to 3 meters (6.6 to 9.8 feet) per year within and updrift of the groin field was reversed after groin construction; shoreline erosion downdrift (west) of the groin field accelerated to at least 28 meters (96 feet) per year. Profile lines updrift (east) of the groin field accreted at a rate of 1.10 meters (3.6 feet) per year as measured at the MSL shoreline and showed an increase of 3.68 cubic meters per meter (1.47 cubic yards per foot) per year in sand stored on the beach above MSL. The shoreline within the groin field accreted at a rate of 3.45 meters (11.3 feet) per year and the beach unit volume increased at a rate of 11.92 cubic meters per meter (4.75 cubic yards per foot) per year, including beach fill. Downdrift of the groin field the profiles showed an average MSL shoreline gain of 0.66 meters (2.2 feet) per year and an average unit volume loss of 0.12 cubic meter per meter (0.05 cubic yard per foot) per year. The largest changes measured resulted from the storm of 22 March 1973, which eroded the shoreline an average of 20 meters (65.6 feet) and removed an average of 29 cubic meters per meter (11.6 cubic yards per foot) of beach front above the MSL elevation. Beach changes were found to be seasonal, with the least amount of sand above MSL from January to May.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.

Book Beach Changes at Atlantic City New Jersey 1962 73

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repetitive surveys of the above MSL beach were made along seven profile lines at Atlantic City, on the northeast end of Absecon Island, New Jersey, from 1962 to 1973. Major beach-fill projects were accomplished in 1963 and 1970 which introduced approximately 428,000 and 635,000 cubic meters of fill material, respectively, to the northernmost half of the study area; movements of this material are discussed. Seventeen storms were reasonably well documented during the study and their effects are reported. Measured storm changes were highly variable. For a given storm, adjacent profiles often indicated opposite changes, with one accreting and one eroding. this is attributed to structural effects, as well as wave refraction effects near Absecon Inlet. Storm changes of the MSL shoreline position were often opposite in sign from beach volume changes. Frequently, the shoreline change indicated accretion, while the beach volume actually suffered a net loss. The largest beach changes measured resulted from the storm of 23 September 1964, which eroded an average of about 23 cubic meters per meter of beach face above MSL, and storms of 16 September 1967 and 25 February 1968, which caused an average shoreline recession of 5.9 meters. Beach changes were found to be seasonal, with the greatest volume of sand above MSL from May to October. The data collected provide no information on the profile changes occurring below MSL.
