Book Beach Changes at Milford and Fairfield Beaches Connecticut 1962 1971

Download or read book Beach Changes at Milford and Fairfield Beaches Connecticut 1962 1971 written by Robert W. Morton and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beach profile line data collected as part of the Beach Evaluation Program were examined for sites located at Milford and Fairfield, Connecticut. A total of seven profile lines were examined using standard measurements such as mean sea level intercept, above mean sea level volume, and linear wave refraction plots, as well as empirical eigenfunction analyses. All these methods showed erosion at all the lines at Milford, while Fairfield showed accretion at two out of three lines. Erosion rate for both beaches varied from 0.096 to 2.886 meters per year. The most significant factors affecting the short-term variability in beach volume are storm activity and wind direction. Each of the beaches is affected by longshore transport; however, transport at Milford is limited due to high-density shorefront housing and associated roads and seawalls, Fairfield favors northeast transport, but rates are unknown. Sediment supply for the beaches is limited, but both beaches are subject to onshore-offshore sediment transport. Neither of the beaches showed any significant seasonal changes. The characteristics of the Connecticut beaches differ markedly form other, less sheltered beaches studied in this program, as they appear relatively stable and dominated by long-term trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.

Book excerpt: What was Stratford like early in the last century? Postcards recorded important scenes and activities. Local shops often made up their own cards and folders, which residents collected and shared with friends and relatives. This postcard history of Stratford draws on such cards to show commercial and recreational life in the town's neighborhoods and along its shore. Cards depicting the early aviation industry and little-known 1912 army maneuvers in Stratford are included here. Informative captions expand on these images with stories about the town and its people.

Book Geology of Millard County Utah

Download or read book Geology of Millard County Utah written by Lehi F. Hintze and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin serves not only to introduce the non-geologist to the rich geology of Millard County, but also to provide professional geologists with technical information on the stratigraphy, paleontology, and structural geology of the county. Millard County is unique among Utah’s counties in that it contains an exceptionally complete billion-year geologic record. This happened because until about 200 million years ago the area of present-day Millard County lay near sea level and was awash in shallow marine waters on a continental shelf upon which a stack of fossil-bearing strata more than 6 miles (10 km) thick slowly accumulated. This bulletin summarizes what is known about these strata, as well as younger rocks and surficial deposits in the county, and provides references to scientific papers that describe them in greater detail. Mountains North 30 x 60 (1:100,000-scale) quadrangles. These companion maps and this bulletin portray the geology of Millard County more completely and accurately than any previously published work.
