Book excerpt: An exploration of what it means to be fabulous--and why eccentric style, fashion, and creativity are more political than ever Prince once told us not to hate him 'cause he's fabulous. But what does it mean to be fabulous? Is fabulous style only about labels, narcissism, and selfies--looking good and feeling gorgeous? Or can acts of fabulousness be political gestures, too? What are the risks of fabulousness? And in what ways is fabulous style a defiant response to the struggles of living while marginalized? madison moore answers these questions in a timely and fascinating book that explores how queer, brown, and other marginalized outsiders use ideas, style, and creativity in everyday life. Moving from catwalks and nightclubs to the street, moore dialogues with a range of fabulous and creative powerhouses, including DJ Vjuan Allure, voguing superstar Lasseindra Ninja, fashion designer Patricia Field, performance artist Alok Vaid-Menon, and a wide range of other aesthetic rebels from the worlds of art, fashion, and nightlife. In a riveting synthesis of autobiography, cultural analysis, and ethnography, moore positions fabulousness as a form of cultural criticism that allows those who perform it to thrive in a world where they are not supposed to exist.

When we learn how to love ourselves unconditionally, we will be able to experience a life worth living and also inspire and touch the people around us. Then we not only make a difference in our own lives, but also in the lives of others. In her first book, Knowing Who I Am, Nianell tells how she has learned to love herself. She takes the reader on a journey through her life, from being a shy, withdrawn schoolgirl to becoming the acclaimed singer/songwriter she is today. Like most people, Nianell has had to face challenges, and she offers an honest and unpretentious account of her personal experience of suffering, the struggle to belong, love, womanhood, being a mother of triplets, and being a star. Her personal stories, many shared with the public for the first time, illustrate how she discovered who she really is and how she came to the point of accepting herself and her worth. Nianell’s descriptions of her experiences will touch your heart, inspire you, and help you realize the value of accepting and loving yourself as you are. Knowing Who I Am is an enjoyable combination of biography and inspiration. It is a reading and growing experience that will remain with you long after you have finished the book. Download or read book Witchwoods written by Gary D. Henry and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witches, most maligned as evil emissaries of the devil himself, have mystified us for centuries. The devil placed women, perceived to have sold their souls, into communities to wreak havoc on society. The Puritan leaders, during the birth of the country, believed this when they systematically tried to rid the world of witches during the Salem witch trials in 1692. To the religious zealots of the time, the trials rectified the perceived departure of the accused from the groups strict puritanical beliefs and rid their community of the impurities that the so-called witches represented. One of those convicted witches escaped the tyranny of the times and cast her revenge deep within the woods of Tennessee. Three couples, all young and excessively rich, decided to spend their twenties exploring the world and then embarking on starting families and living the American dream. The friends were inseparable, all with a love for travel and genuine care for each other. Josh and Sydney Fenton began to grow their wealth directly out of college. Hank and Nancy Peterson inherited his familys business valued at one and a half billion dollars. Ethan, Joshs brother, and Doug, Nancys brother, met a year after Hank met Nancy. Ethan and Doug each owned a large, profitable design firm. The couple married in California, a state that allowed the legal union of same-sex partners. They then merged their enterprises to form the largest design firm in the world. The group of close friends traveled extensively throughout the world for eight years, visiting such renowned and reportedly haunted sites as The Tower of London in England, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, and the Hollywood-Roosevelt Hotel in California. The friends soon unanimously agreed that, above all others, the scary places in the world most thrilled and captivated their imaginations. When two of the couples were having problems in their relationships, Sydney attempted to bring about reconciliations by planning another scary trip. They arrived at their destination in Tennessee, a 500-acre tract of land reportedly haunted by the infamous Bell Witch. Sydney and the group loved being among the beauty of nature. Spending time in the notorious woods would, she hoped, rekindle the love that the two couples had once shared for each other. Sydney convinced her husband, Josh, to buy the land, and together the three couples set out to spend a few weeks searching for the Bell Witch. Together with Sydneys sister, Bonnie, a modern-day witch, and a well-seasoned mountain-man guide named DR, the group set out on an adventure that they would come to regret. What they did not realize at the time was that the Bell Witch was not the only witch they would encounter. They entered the woods and into the witches domain, with innocent hopes of a fun and conciliatory outing for the two struggling couples amid the tall pines. What awaited them, instead, were violent, murderous entities that forced them through a death-dodging experience that changed their lives forever. The witches held them captive within their lair, forced them to fight for their freedom, and indeed for their lives before the witches and their claimed woods pushed the friends deeper into the witches psychotic realm.

Book Factual Nonsense

    Book Details:
  • Author : Darren Coffield
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2013-05-01
  • ISBN : 1780885261
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Factual Nonsense written by Darren Coffield and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joshua's gallery 'Factual Nonsense' was quite unlike any other. Called a 'crazy powerhouse of ideas' it was a kind of cultural think-tank located in the then run-down East End area known as Shoreditch, which would later become a cohesive and creative hub (since rebranded as 'Silicon Roundabout'). Joshua was the driving force that turned the area's fortune and reputation around. Under the auspices of his Factual Nonsense banner, he held some of the most important and influential public art events of the late 20th Century. The first of these was an anarchic swipe at the notion of a traditional village fete called 'A Fete Worse than Death', with some of the biggest but the still yet unknown stars of the art world, including Damien Hirst and Angus Fairhurst, famously dressed as clowns and produced the first spin paintings at the Fete (for sale for the princely sum of £1). Whilst Hirst's spin machine has, from lowly beginnings at the Fete, gone on to appear recently at the World Economic Forum, a billionaire's playground, creating spin paintings for rich oligarch's wives as entertainment, Joshua was to die alone, poverty stricken back in 1996 on the cusp of international fame. Never reaping the rewards that were to come from the economic upturn and Charles Saatchi's Sensation exhibition, his death was a marker for the beginning of an era of international fame and success for his contemporaries and the end of the 'classic' avant-garde. The list of the seventy or so names of people I have interviewed for the book over the past year reads like a who's who of the contemporary art world, with contributions from the likes of Jay Jopling, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gary Hume, Gavin Turk, Maureen Paley and Sir Peter Blake. Although Joshua never achieved the recognition that he deserved in his lifetime, he was a pivotal figure in the London art scene during the early 1990's. Josh moved into Hoxton and opened a gallery there and started a veritable art movement, while the place was a neglected London backwater. His lasting legacy was to bring together a group of artists and gallerists and create what is now known as the YBA scene. The text is illustrated with previously unseen photographs, letters and extracts from Joshua's diaries, which give insight into his thought process as well as the deterioration of his mental state towards the end of his brief but eventful life.
