Book Bowls Bcs Or Bust

    Book Details:
  • Author : David DeVries
  • Publisher : LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
  • Release : 2011-01

Download or read book Bowls Bcs Or Bust written by David DeVries and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Football Bowl Subdivision or FBS (formerly Division I-A) is the only American NCAA team sport to determine its champion without a playoff. Despite strong sentiment in favor of a playoff over the current Bowl Championship Series system, and admittance from top-level NCAA and FBS administrators that a playoff would increase overall revenues, the BCS/bowl system remains favored by the majority of university presidents and conference commissioners. This study examined one possible reason there is not a playoff. To achieve this, the revenues of the current system were compared to conservative revenue estimates of a proposed playoff, likely administered by the NCAA, similar to the Division I Basketball Championship. The goal was to determine how the current bowl relationships and contracts factor into university president s resistance to implement a playoff. The findings showed that while more overall revenue could be earned by a playoff, institutions could have less available unrestricted revenue to use at their discretion.

Book excerpt: A team of award-winning sports reporters takes down the Great Satan of college sports: the Bowl Championship Series. Every college sport picks its champion by a postseason tournament, except for one: Division I-A football. Instead of a tournament, fans are subjected to the Bowl Championship Series, an arcane mix of polling and mathematical rankings that results in just two teams playing for the championship. It is, without a doubt, the most hated institution in all of sports. A recent Sports Illustrated poll found that more than 90 percent of sports fans oppose the BCS, yet this system has remained in place for more than a decade. Built upon top-notch investigative reporting, Death to the BCS at last reveals the truth about this monstrous entity and offers a simple solution for fixing it. Death to the BCS includes findings from interviews with power players, as well as research into federal tax records, Congressional testimony, and private contracts, revealing: ?The truth behind the "Cartel"-the anonymous suits who run the BCS and who profit handsomely by protecting it ?The flawed math and corruption that determine which teams participate in the national championship ?How the system hurts competition by perpetuating "cupcake" schedules ?How "mid-major" teams are systematically denied a chance to play for the championship ?How a comprehensive sixteen-team playoff plan can solve the problem while enhancing profitability The first book to lay out the unseemly inner workings of the BCS in full detail, Death to the BCS is a rousing manifesto for bringing fairness back to one of our most beloved sports.

Book Why Are Student Athletes Funding Your Future

Download or read book Why Are Student Athletes Funding Your Future written by Dr. Ernest E. Cutler, Jr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship shortfalls persist, leaving NCAA scholarship student-athletes to pay hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for additional educational expenses not covered by their current athletic scholarships. Meanwhile, NCAA campuses continue to generate money from the sale of apparel and other merchandise featuring star athletes. In this detailed study, Ernest Cutler explores the troubling history of money changing hands, with none of it going to student athletes who are for some reason considered amateurs that should not be eligible for payment. He also takes a careful look about what such a system says about academic values and educational institutions, as well as how the system contributes to infractions by student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators. This research study is not intended to disrespect the NCAA, but it does seek to serve as a tool to change problematic policies that infringe upon the rights of current, former, and future student athletes.
