Book excerpt: This report investigates: the governance of the BBC's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide; the activities of BBC Worldwide, including programme sales, production, magazines and websites; BBC Worldwide's acquisition of Lonely Planet; and the possible partnership between BBC Worldwide and Channel 4. There are major benefits from the BBC undertaking commercial activities: the profits generated by the exploitation of the BBC's intellectual property can be reinvested in the BBC's public services, to the benefit of licence fee payers. But the manner in which some of the BBC's commercial revenue is generated, and the governance arrangements within which the BBC Worldwide operates, causes increasing concern. Worldwide has proved successful in recent years in exploiting new commercial opportunities, made possible by a loosening of the rules that govern the limits to its operations. However, there a balance to be drawn between Worldwide generating a return for the BBC, and limiting Worldwide's operations in order to ensure it upholds the BBC's reputation and does not damage its commercial competitors. Worldwide's minority stakes in overseas production companies, its controversial acquisition of Lonely Planet, and its growing portfolio of magazines, suggest that the balance has been tipped too far in favour of Worldwide's unrestricted expansion, jeopardising the reputation of the BBC and having an adverse impact on its commercial competitors. It is in the interests of the UK's creative economy as a whole that BBC Worldwide's activities are reined back. The BBC Trust should reinstate the rule that all BBC commercial activity must have a clear link with core BBC programming.

Book BBC annual report and accounts 2006 07

Download or read book BBC annual report and accounts 2006 07 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Culture, Media and Sport Committee's oral evidence session on the BBC annual report and accounts 2006-07 was followed up with some written questions. The Committee has concerns about the structure and content of the BBC reply to those questions. In particular it is not clear why the BBC Trust takes different views on transparency of employee costs and on transparency of talent (presenters or actors etc) costs, and why grouping of payments in bands for one but not the other presents data protection or breach of confidence issues. The Committee also questions why viewing figures for BBC3 are given in three-minute reach figures rather than the standard 15-minute reach used throughout the annual report, and why the BBC3 figures excluding repeats of BB1 programmes were not provided. On Freesat, a joint venture to provide a national satellite-based free-to-view digital service, the failure to disclose the contribution of the licence-fee payer is held to be unreasonable. The Committee would like greater clarity about who speaks for the BBC: the Trust or Executive. Future responses should make clear where accountability lies for particular issues, and the BBC should take a more constructive approach to responding to Parliamentary scrutiny.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC is an extraordinary national and global institution. Often one of the very few things people outside this country know about Britain is that it is the home of the BBC. The BBC's value lies not only in the organisation itself, but in its accumulated reputation, experience and goodwill, in its public service remit, and in its place at the centre of a vibrant broadcasting industry. It sets a standard in broadcasting quality, impartiality and independence that serves as a benchmark for others. For these reasons the BBC has a vast amount to contribute as an international standard of excellence in public service broadcasting. At a time when many media organisations are reducing their international coverage, relying on a few feeds and becoming more prone to crowd behaviour, there is a huge opportunity for the BBC to consolidate this global position. But the BBC also has a role as a beacon of enlightened values of openness, freedom of thought, toleration and diversity. As the world increasingly divides on ideological and sectarian grounds, it is vital more than ever today to preserve an educated public realm in which civilised debate and the mutually respectful exchange of ideas may flourish. What would it take to create another? It is very hard to imagine how it could be done. Yet this does not mean the BBC is beyond improvement, or secure from technological, financial or commercial challenge. First, its core activities are under serious commercial threat: from traditional competitors, from new online insurgents, from lower cost providers of access to high quality programming, among others. New technologies and ways of accessing programmes are pushing the BBC to consider long term alternatives to the licence fee. Secondly, the BBC is not well served by its often unwieldy bureaucracy, its internal politics, and a culture which has been criticised as arrogant and introspective. And finally, the BBC's Director General has argued that the licence fee is viable for the coming Charter period. But as commercial and technological pressures converge, as the BBC's market share continues to fall and a new generation consumes its media in innumerable new ways, there is the question whether or not the licence fee funding model can be sustained.

Book BBC World Service

  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2019-11-14

  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book BBC World Service written by Gordon Johnston and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full-length history of the BBC World Service: from its interwar launch as short-wave radio broadcasts for the British Empire, to its twenty-first-century incarnation as the multi-media global platform of the British Broadcasting Corporation. The book provides insights into the BBC’s working relationship with the Foreign Office, the early years of the Empire Service, and the role of the BBC during the Second World War. In following the voice of the BBC through the Cold War and the contraction of the British empire, the book argues that debates about the work and purposes of the World Service have always involved deliberations about the future of the UK and its place in the world. In current times, these debates have been shaped by the British government’s commitment to leave the European Union and the centrifugal currents in British politics which in the longer term threaten the integrity of the United Kingdom. Through a detailed exploration of its past, the book poses questions about the World Service’s possible future and argues that, for the BBC, the question is not only what it means to be a global broadcaster as we enter the third decade of the twenty-first century, but what it means to be a national broadcaster in a divided kingdom.

Book The BBC s White City 2 Development

Download or read book The BBC s White City 2 Development written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-02-14 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC's White City 2 property development in West London comprises three new buildings, which were built next to an existing BBC building known as White City 1. White City 2 was financed by Land Securities Trillium under a 30 year partnership deal with the BBC, which also covered property services at 48 other BBC locations. The cost of construction for White City 2 was £210 million, along with £60.9 million for furniture and technical fit-out of the buildings. The development was completed on time, but the Committee of Public Accounts found several aspects of the project constituting risks to value for money. The cost of the development also exceeded the amount originally approved by the BBC Governors, along with significant variations to the scheme as the project progressed. The Committee set out a number of conclusions and recommendations: that the whole life costs of projects should be assessed and made available to the BBC Governors; the BBC should better integrate design and construction, so reducing the risk of design changes after contracts have begun; the license fee money should not be used to subsidise the BBC's commercial subsidiaries, and that rent charged for the sublet of buildings should meet the BBC's costs; that the BBC should not hold on to property which it does not need or which it cannot use cost-effectively; the BBC in future should follow public sector good practice, in particular in estimating whole life costs of projects, monitoring returns to the private sector, obtaining refinancing benefits, and integrating design and construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This captivating book reproduces arguably the most extraordinary primary source documents in fashion history. Providing a revealing window onto the Renaissance, they chronicle how style-conscious accountant Matthäus Schwarz and his son Veit Konrad experienced life through clothes, and climbed the social ladder through fastidious management of self-image. These bourgeois dandies' agenda resonates as powerfully today as it did in the sixteenth century: one has to dress to impress, and dress to impress they did. The Schwarzes recorded their sartorial triumphs as well as failures in life in a series of portraits by illuminists over 60 years, which have been comprehensively reproduced in full color for the first time. These exquisite illustrations are accompanied by the Schwarzes' fashion-focussed yet at times deeply personal captions, which render the pair the world's first fashion bloggers and pioneers of everyday portraiture. The First Book of Fashion demonstrates how dress – seemingly both ephemeral and trivial – is a potent tool in the right hands. Beyond this, it colorfully recaptures the experience of Renaissance life and reveals the importance of clothing to the aesthetics and every day culture of the period. Historians Ulinka Rublack's and Maria Hayward's insightful commentaries create an unparalleled portrait of sixteenth-century dress that is both strikingly modern and thorough in its description of a true Renaissance fashionista's wardrobe. This first English translation also includes a bespoke pattern by TONY award-winning costume designer and dress historian Jenny Tiramani, from which readers can recreate one of Schwarz's most elaborate and politically significant outfits.

Book The BBC

Download or read book The BBC written by Tom Mills and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC: the mouthpiece of the Establishment? The BBC is one of the most important institutions in Britain; it is also one of the most misunderstood. Despite its claim to be independent and impartial, and the constant accusations of a liberal bias, the BBC has always sided with the elite. As Tom Mills demonstrates, we are only getting the news that the Establishment wants aired in public. Throughout its existence, the BBC has been in thrall to those in power. This was true in 1926 when it stood against the workers during the General Strike, and since then the Corporation has continued to mute the voices of those who oppose the status quo: miners in 1984; anti-war protesters in 2003; those who offer alternatives to austerity economics since 2008. From the outset much of its activity has been scrutinised by the secret services at the invitation of those in charge. Since the 1990s the BBC has been integrated into the market, while its independence from government and big business has been steadily eroded. The BBC is an important and timely examination of a crucial public institution that is constantly under threat.
