Book excerpt: Bayocean sand spit lies along the northern Oregon coast approximately 70 miles south of the Columbia River. Work was begun on the construction of a large recreational resort on the spit in the early 1900's. At the outset, the resort appeared to have a promising future. However, a three-year delay in the completion of the railroad to Tillamook created financial instability and lawsuits which continued up to the depression of the early 1930's. There soon followed severe erosion of Bayocean spit leading to its breaching in 1952 and forcing the abandonment of the deteriorated resort. The erosion appeared to have been initiated by the construction and subsequent lengthening of a north jetty to the Tillamook Bay channel. Rapid sand deposition north of the north jetty indicated that the structure had blocked a predominant north to south longshore sand transport, thus depriving the spit of sand and resulting in erosion. Similar occurrences have been documented at other coastal locations. However, analysis of historical shoreline changes and aerial photographs taken in 1971, 1972 and 1973 show that sand eroded from beaches to the north and to the south of the jetty has been transported and deposited immediately adjacent to both sides of the structure. This symmetrical pattern of erosion and deposition on both sides of the jetty indicates a reversing longshore sand transport with a nearzero net annual drift. The shoreline conditions at Bayocean demonstrate that beach erosion can result, from the construction of a jetty transverse to a seasonally reversing longshore sand transport with a near-zero net drift.

Book excerpt: In 1907, the developers of Bayocean Park promised the public a resort grander than any other along the Pacific Northwest Coast. Urbanites seeking a cool summer retreat quickly bought up lots, especially those on the sandspit's one-hundred-foot-high ridgeline, where the simultaneous views of bay and ocean were captivating. But Tillamook's remote location and an economic downturn led to extensive delays, receivership, and a less than grand resort. Despite that, many people fell in love with Bayocean. And, at one point or another, it featured a natatorium, three hotels, forty-two rental cabins, a two-story mercantile, two restaurants, three dance halls, an amusement pavilion, and fifty-nine homes. Reed College students ran the resort one summer, a military academy another. A commune livened things up during the Great Depression, as did Coast Guard war dogs during World War II. These and other events in Bayocean's history make this an intriguing chronicle, but the fact that nothing remains is why it matters. Erosion began pulling homes into the sea in the late 1920s, and it continued until a storm surge blew 3,000 feet of its base into Tillamook Bay in November 1952. Four years later, the Army Corps of Engineers built a breakwater to reconnect Bayocean to the mainland and prevent the same thing from happening in the future. But what remained of the town was destroyed in the process. And erosion continued, causing the last house to fall in 1960. It took another decade for scientists to figure out that the cause of the erosion was faulty jetty planning rather than natural forces. When Jerry Sutherland, author of Calvin Tibbets: Oregon's First Pioneer, heard about Bayocean in 2014, he read everything previously published about the catastrophe and then started looking for answers to questions raised while doing so. He also wanted to know more about the people involved, especially those who lost homes. Sutherland has shared some of his discoveries at www.bayocean.net and with the producers of two television documentaries. In this book, he brings it all together.
