Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Ocean was global long before the Atlantic, and today the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal—India, Bangladesh, Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia—are home to one in four people on Earth. Crossing the Bay of Bengal places this region at the heart of world history for the first time. Integrating human and environmental history, and mining a wealth of sources, Sunil Amrith gives a revelatory and stirring new account of the Bay and those who have inhabited it. For centuries the Bay of Bengal served as a maritime highway between India and China, and then as a battleground for European empires, all while being shaped by the monsoons and by human migration. Imperial powers in the nineteenth century, abetted by the force of capital and the power of steam, reconfigured the Bay in their quest for coffee, rice, and rubber. Millions of Indian migrants crossed the sea, bound by debt or spurred by drought, and filled with ambition. Booming port cities like Singapore and Penang became the most culturally diverse societies of their time. By the 1930s, however, economic, political, and environmental pressures began to erode the Bay’s centuries-old patterns of interconnection. Today, rising waters leave the Bay of Bengal’s shores especially vulnerable to climate change, at the same time that its location makes it central to struggles over Asia’s future. Amrith’s evocative and compelling narrative of the region’s pasts offers insights critical to understanding and confronting the many challenges facing Asia in the decades ahead.

  • ISBN : 1526728303

Download or read book Bay of Pigs written by Phil Carradice and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of the disastrous invasion of Cuba funded and directed by the United States is “a readable, accessible introduction to the topic” (H-Net). Perhaps not in casualties but as far as prestige and standing in the world were concerned, the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961 was the worst disaster to befall the USA since the War of 1812 when British forces burned the White House. Badly planned, badly organized, the affair was littered with mistakes from start to finish, not least with an inept performance by John F. Kennedy and his new administration. Supposedly an attempt by Cuban exiles to regain their homeland, the whole operation was funded and equipped by the USA. When things began to go wrong with the landings at Playa Larga and Playa Giron on the southern coast of Cuba, President Kennedy and his advisers began overruling military decisions with the result that the invading Brigade 2506, made up of Cuban exiles, was left with little or no air cover, limited ammunition, and no easy escape. Fidel Castro made great play of his success and American failure at the Bay of Pigs. He, like Nikita Khrushchev, thought Kennedy was weak—and the Cuban Missile Crisis of the following year was almost an inevitable consequence of the disaster. This account tells the dramatic story of this pivotal Cold War event.

Book Mangrove Ichnology of the Bay of Bengal Coast Eastern India

Download or read book Mangrove Ichnology of the Bay of Bengal Coast Eastern India written by Chirananda De and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the world’s largest mangrove delta complex, located at Sundarban, a world heritage site, and on the relatively new and rapidly expanding scientific discipline of ichnology. In addition to presenting a range of ichnological research databases that are widely applicable to multidisciplinary research fields in geology, biophysics, biology, ecology, geomorphology and the marine and environmental sciences, it addresses the global concern of rising sea levels to explain growing ecological problems, from the mass mortality of coastal organisms and rapid loss of mangrove forest wealth, to widespread coastal and riverbank erosion. It also demonstrates the value of applying new ichnological tools to coastal geotechnical planning and programming, and to groundwater exploration. Thus, the book addresses a broad readership including earth scientists from various disciplines, state administrators and members of the general public.
