Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1877, Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) Indians were desperately fleeing U.S. Army troops. After a 1,700-mile journey across Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, the Nez Perces headed for the Canadian border, hoping to find refuge in the land of the White Mother, Queen Victoria. But the army caught up with them at the Bear’s Paw Mountains in northern Montana, and following a devastating battle, Chief Joseph and most of his people surrendered. The wrenching tale of Chief Joseph and his followers is now legendary, but Bear’s Paw is not the entire story. In fact, nearly three hundred Nez Perces escaped the U.S. Army and fled into Canada. Beyond Bear’s Paw is the first book to explore the fate of these “nontreaty” Indians. Drawing on hitherto unexplored Canadian and U.S. sources, including reminiscences of Nez Perce participants, Jerome A. Greene presents an epic story of human endurance under duress. Greene vividly describes the tortuous journey of the small band who managed to elude Colonel Nelson A. Miles’s command. After the escapees crossed the “Medicine Line” into the British Possessions, they found only new trauma. Within a few years, most of them stole back to their homelands in Idaho Territory. Those who remained north of the line faced a difficult and uncertain future. In recent years, Nimiipuu descendants from the United States and Canada have revisited their common past and sought reconciliation. Beyond Bear’s Paw offers new perspectives on the Nez Perces’ struggle for freedom, their hapless rejection, and their ultimate cultural renewal.

These battlegrounds remain today, a testament to the clash of cultures that defined the region in the nineteenth century. Author Barbara Fifer takes readers on a historic journey to the solemn sites of Montana's most fascinating and storied battles, from Two Medicine Creek to the Little Bighorn and on to the Sweetgrass Hills, revealing engaging tales -- from fighters and witnesses on both sides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effigy Hill, Inscription Canyon, Black Mountain Complex, Superior Valley, Barstow, California 05/2018 Indian Rock Writings represents a paradigm shift in American Indian studies, from illegally contrived cultural obscuration to actual documented historical fact... For seven thousand years, the history surrounding the Battle of Bear Paw, in the Black Mountain Complex, Superior Valley of Southern California, was taught to ‘oot (proto-Uto-Aztecan) children using Indian rock writings. This Native American history is confirmed by Southern Ute Elder Dr. James Jefferson, PhD, and representatives from countless Ute enclaves throughout the United States, Central and South America. “We already know all these things,” stipulates Dr. Jefferson, confirming the contents of the book in accordance with Indian law. In the 1850s, this battle and all Indian history were stolen from the Native Americans by an attorney for the railroads, mining and banking industries. Here within these covers is a preliminary primer, dictionary, and thesaurus with which to supplement a small portion of recorded Indian history. A history recovered from Indian rock writings spanning several thousand years and two thousand miles from Southern California to Illinois, Texas to Montana. Perhaps the contents will inspire more field research and unmask Indian truths obscured by design for more than one hundred sixty-five years...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nez Perce Summer, 1877 tells the story of a people's epic struggle to survive spiritually, culturally, and physically in the face of unrelenting military force. Written by one of the foremost experts in frontier military history, Jerome A. Greene, and reviewed by members of the Nez Perce tribe, this definitive treatment of the Nez Perce War is the first to incorporate research from all known accounts of Nez Perce and U.S. military participants. Enhanced by sixteen detailed maps and forty-nine historic photographs, Greene's gripping narrative takes readers on a three-and-one-half month 1,700-mile journey across the wilds of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana territories. All of the skirmishes and battles of the war receive detailed treatment, which benefits from Greene's astute analysis of the strategies and decision making on both sides. Between 100 and 150 of the more than 800 Nez Perce men, women, and children who began the trek were killed during the war. Almost as many died in the months following the surrender, after they were exiled to malaria-ridden northeastern Oklahoma. Army deaths numbered 113. The casualties on both sides were an extraordinary price for a war that nobody wanted but whose history has since fascinated generations of Americans.

  • Author : Liz Bryan
  • Publisher : Heritage House Publishing Co
  • Release : 2019-06-11
  • ISBN : 1772033014
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book River of Dreams written by Liz Bryan and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A picturesque, reflective journey along the route of the ancient Milk River, from southern Alberta into northern Montana. The Milk River is a small and dreamy river, flowing lazily through some of the loneliest lands of North America, the dry plains of Alberta and Montana. Dwarfed by such giants as the Saskatchewan and Mississippi Rivers, it is indeed as meek as its name, virtually unknown to most North Americans. Yet few streams can match its incredible international journey, the magical beauty of its landscape, or the long and often sad history that suffuses every inch of its 1,200-kilometre passage. The Milk River has always been a special place for the Indigenous Peoples of the plains, providing them with physical and spiritual sustenance. Yet the river's story also encompasses the settlement of the northwestern plains at a time of great change, when Indigenous ways of life were being systematically extinguished, first by brazen whiskey traders and later the flow of immigration and the military will of the US cavalry. As settlement prevailed, brave hopes and dreams often fell victim to injustices and anguish. With lyrical prose, stunning photography, and remarkable insight into the history and geography of the region, River of Dreams is a meditation on the beauty and significance of Milk River country.
