Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth and into the early decades of the twentieth century, it was common for rural and working-class parents in the Czech-German borderlands to ensure that their children were bilingual by sending them to live with families who spoke the "other" language. As nationalism became a more potent force in Central Europe, however, such practices troubled pro-German and pro-Czech activists, who feared that the children born to their nation could literally be "lost" or "kidnapped" from the national community through such experiences and, more generally, by parents who were either flexible about national belonging or altogether indifferent to it. Highlighting this indifference to nationalism—and concerns about such apathy among nationalists—Kidnapped Souls offers a surprising new perspective on Central European politics and society in the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on Austrian, Czech, and German archives, Tara Zahra shows how nationalists in the Bohemian Lands worked to forge political cultures in which children belonged more rightfully to the national collective than to their parents. Through their educational and social activism to fix the boundaries of nation and family, Zahra finds, Czech and German nationalists reveal the set of beliefs they shared about children, family, democracy, minority rights, and the relationship between the individual and the collective. Zahra shows that by 1939 a vigorous tradition of Czech-German nationalist competition over children had created cultures that would shape the policies of the Nazi occupation and the Czech response to it. The book's concluding chapter weighs the prehistory and consequences of the postwar expulsion of German families from the Bohemian Lands. Kidnapped Souls is a significant contribution to our understanding of the genealogy of modern nationalism in Central Europe and a groundbreaking exploration of the ways in which children have been the objects of political contestation when national communities have sought to shape, or to reshape, their futures.

Book Strong Hearts Wounded Souls

Download or read book Strong Hearts Wounded Souls written by Tom Holm and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An all-encompassing study . . . Holm shows the interconnecting historical, social and psychological attributes of Native American veterans.” —Historynet.com At least 43,000 Native Americans fought in the Vietnam War, yet both the American public and the United States government have been slow to acknowledge their presence and sacrifices in that conflict. In this first-of-its-kind study, Tom Holm draws on extensive interviews with Native American veterans to tell the story of their experiences in Vietnam and their readjustment to civilian life. Holm describes how Native American motives for going to war, experiences of combat, and readjustment to civilian ways differ from those of other ethnic groups. He explores Native American traditions of warfare and the role of the warrior to explain why many young Indigenous men chose to fight in Vietnam. He shows how Native Americans drew on tribal customs and religion to sustain them during combat. And he describes the rituals and ceremonies practiced by families and tribes to help heal veterans of the trauma of war and return them to the “white path of peace.” This information, largely unknown outside the Native American community, adds important new perspectives to our national memory of the Vietnam war and its aftermath. “An overview of one kind of serviceman about which nothing substantive has been written: the Native American . . . A fascinating introduction to the role of military traditions and the warrior ethic in mid-20th-century [Native American] life.” —Library Journal

Book The Battle for the Souls of Black Folk

Download or read book The Battle for the Souls of Black Folk written by Thomas Aiello and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 20 years between 1895 and 1915, two key leaders—Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois—shaped the struggle for African American rights. This book examines the impact of their fierce debate on America's response to Jim Crow and positions on civil rights throughout the 20th century—and evaluates the legacies of these two individuals even today. The debate between W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington on how to further social and economic progress for African Americans lasted 20 years, from 1895 to Washington's death in 1915. Their ongoing conversation evolved over time, becoming fiercer and more personal as the years progressed. But despite its complexities and steadily accumulating bitterness, it was still, at its heart, a conversation—an impassioned contest at the turn of the century to capture the souls of black folk. This book focuses on the conversation between Washington and Du Bois in order to fully examine its contours. It serves as both a document reader and an authored text that enables readers to perceive how the back and forth between these two individuals produced a cacophony of ideas that made it anything but a bipolar debate, even though their expressed differences would ultimately shape the two dominant strains of activist strategy. The numerous chapters on specific topics and historical events follow a preface that presents an overview of both the conflict and its historiographical treatment; evaluates the legacies of both Washington and Du Bois, emphasizing the trajectories of their theories beyond 1915; and provides an explanation of the unique structure of the work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doorway to Illuminations A strange kind of energy was vibrating and whirling through my soul in the early hours of 1 March 2007, raising my normal body frequency. An unusual heat shot up through my body and I was aware of a strange heartbeat. I felt as if I were dying or having a heart attack and I was terrified as no one else was with me. The time was 3 am. Instead of reaching for a glass of water I grabbed a pen and writing pad and sat up in my bed, without consciously exercising my mind. The pen kept writing and scribbling then I started to hear certain words and phrases which I began to repeat out loud. It seemed as if hours and hours had passed and by this time I was so stiff that I could feel pain shooting up my spine. By now I was alert, looking at the piles of paper filled with my scribbling. I was about to collapse so I decided to go and make myself a cup of tea and wash my face. I felt normal again but to my astonishment I discovered that the time was by now 10 am! How on earth had I sat there all those hours without moving! I looked at everything I had written. I couldnt believe it. I had never had any interest at any time in my life in language or poetry, and had never been able to produce fine words or phrases. Yet I had managed to produce an extraordinary poem. My mind was in disbelief. I was so tired and utterly baffled. The next day all my friends and family were shocked at how such a powerful poem had come out of someone like me as I wasnt even born in this country. After a week, another poem came. I was given these two poems for my life story book. I asked whoever was around one night: why and how and who? I remembered that Id had a dream in November 2006 in which my father, who passed away in 2003, told me that a special gift would be given to me and for serving humanity! That was the start of the series of poems which I began writing in March 2007. Up to the present time still more poems have been coming through: I currently have a total of over 40 poems all a gift for humanity. I was instructed to do no more works with individuals but that instead I would need to put my new power and psychic energy to more constructive use for the millions who are in turmoil and in grief and sorrow with all their complications and emotional love traps and more of the dark time which all of us have to go through at some stage of this decaying life. I was also told that it is not my subconscious mind as psychology explains to us: this is a fancy word they use, yet where does that subconscious reside? Call it whatever you like it is not important as its the result which counts: the truth of our evolved spirit within the soul energy which gives us solutions happiness, understanding and unseen intelligence and the iron hand which pulls us out of the black hole of ordinary life with its awesome delusions and earthly domesticated matter It is very important to remember because you are free from every earthly conditioning: you have received a gift. The free spirit is an evolved, illuminated being and progressed mind though not intellectually cultured. That message will be carried with every second I breathe and I shall bring it and give it to all humans who will search one day to discover who they are and why we are born and what the true goal is, but with a free mind and heart. Here are the collection of that gifts of inspiration which I received from the higher being which is far wiser and more intelligent than any human born and any ordinary intellect. Read on and think. We have a collection of poems dictated by the Illuminators (the Emperor of the Soul). You can order it if you want to read them. Many thanks for your time to read the true words of my heart. Book A Battle for the Soul of Islam

Download or read book A Battle for the Soul of Islam written by M. Zuhdi Jasser and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the unsettling social shifts in the wake of 9/11 was the global attention paid to Islam. Here in the United States, we became divided, often sadly along partisan lines, between those who believed every Muslim was a potential threat and those who believed no Muslim could do wrong. For conservative Wisconsin native and former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, these radical times meant facing a new reality as a devout Muslim and a patriot—a certain betrayal within his faith, and a need to answer a question that crossed the minds of even the most sensitive and politically correct: “Can a good Muslim be a good American as well?” Jasser founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) to instill in young American Muslims an appreciation for the distinctively positive impact that this nation’s ideals of liberty have had upon the world. As a nationally recognized expert on Muslim radicalization, he offers non-Muslims a definitive comprehension of the difference between Islam and the spiritual cancer known as Islamism, or political Islam, and how violence and extremism run counter to Islam’s true teachings. As he persuasively argues, until we acknowledge the threat of Islamism in all its forms, the majority of Americans will be gulled into recognizing only the most obvious: terrorism. In A Battle for the Soul of Islam, Jasser embraces both his faith and his country while asking hard questions: * Are American Muslim children learning entitlement as victims, or are they being taught individual responsibility and critical thinking? * Are poisonous conspiracy theories dividing their American identity, or are they gaining exposure to reason, nationalism, and patriotism? * Are Muslims publicly critical of the Islamist movements of the Middle East, or do they remain silent on aspects of religious doctrine that conflict with modernity and universal equality? * Is the American press downplaying the seditious threat of homegrown Islamist radicalism and the influence of Islamists’ propaganda arm on our governmental policies? * Is our culture of political correctness a major obstacle toward long-overdue Muslim reform against Islamism? All these years after 9/11, it’s time for us to understand the true threat of Islamism. It is a Muslim problem that needs a Muslim solution, and A Battle for the Soul of Islam builds a solid, balanced, and imperative must-read foundation for the fight.
