Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battle-Fields and Victory: A Narrative of the Principle Military Operations of the Civil War From the Accession of Grant to the Command of the Union Armies to the End of the War It was far different in the South. Its sparsely settled territory could not long meet the heavy demands for more soldiers which the military authori ties continually made. In the earliest days Of the war the Confederate Congress authorized the drafting Of every able-bodied white man between the ages of eighteen and forty-five. After the costly defeat at Gettysburg, the conscription was rigidly enforced, and the privilege so generally em joyed in the North Of buying a substitute was denied to conscripts. The land was literally swept clean Of able-bodied white men, and the exten sion of the conscription law to permit the enrollment of boys Of sixteen and men of sixty in the reserve or home guard, led General Grant to write that the Confederate authorities robbed alike the cradle and the grave. Book Ulysses S Grant The Architect Of Victory In The U S Civil War

Download or read book Ulysses S Grant The Architect Of Victory In The U S Civil War written by Lt.-Col. Robert G. Shields and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ulysses S. Grant began his military service in 1839 when he entered the U.S. Military Academy. Upon graduation in 1843, he was assigned to an infantry regiment that was destined for duty in the Mexican War. Grant participated in most of the major Mexican War campaigns and after the War would continue on active duty until 1854. Ten years later, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, Commander in Chief of the Union Army, would conceive and orchestrate the Campaign that ended the Civil War. The purpose of this study was to explore Grant’s development as a military leader by researching his personal correspondence. His understanding of national strategy and the operational level of war was the focus of the paper. In addition, Carl Von Clausewitz’s concept of “military genius” was used to analyze Grant’s military intellect. The study revealed that he possessed a sharp military intellect based on common sense and that his understanding of national strategy and the operational art is worthy of study by all military professionals.

Download or read book Staff Ride Handbook For The Vicksburg Campaign December 1862 July 1863 Illustrated Edition written by Dr. Christopher Gabel and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 30 maps and Illustrations The Staff Ride Handbook for the Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863, provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this key Civil War campaign. Part I describes the organization of the Union and Confederate Armies, detailing their weapons, tactics, and logistical, engineer, communications, and medical support. It also includes a description of the U.S. Navy elements that featured so prominently in the campaign. Part II consists of a campaign overview that establishes the context for the individual actions to be studied in the field. Part III consists of a suggested itinerary of sites to visit in order to obtain a concrete view of the campaign in its several phases. For each site, or “stand,” there is a set of travel directions, a discussion of the action that occurred there, and vignettes by participants in the campaign that further explain the action and which also allow the student to sense the human “face of battle.” Part IV provides practical information on conducting a Staff Ride in the Vicksburg area, including sources of assistance and logistical considerations. Appendix A outlines the order of battle for the significant actions in the campaign. Appendix B provides biographical sketches of key participants. Appendix C provides an overview of Medal of Honor conferral in the campaign. An annotated bibliography suggests sources for preliminary study.
