Book Hooligans Harlots and Hangmen

Download or read book Hooligans Harlots and Hangmen written by David Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed study of the criminal justice system in Victorian Britain highlights the dilemmas facing those responsible for administering justice and protecting society from "the criminal." Encompassing the crimes of the never-identified Jack the Ripper, as well as many other equally intriguing criminals, Hooligans, Harlots, and Hangmen: Crime and Punishment in Victorian Britain is a detailed study of the criminal justice system as it evolved from the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 to the outbreak of the "Great War" in 1914. The first section of the book considers crimes and criminals, while the second looks at the ways in which the Victorians sought to explain this deviant behavior. The third section focuses on the creation of criminals through the work of the constabulary and the courts. The final section considers the changing ways in which criminals were punished as the scaffold gave way to the prison as the dominant means of punishment. A brief introduction and conclusion set Victorian crime into its broader sociopolitical context and relates the issues society grappled with then to those of the present day.

Book Women Architects in India

Download or read book Women Architects in India written by Mary N. Woods and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first inclusive study of how women have shaped the modern Indian built environment from the independence struggle until today, this book reveals a history that is largely unknown, not only in the West, but also in India. Educated in the 1930s and 1940s, the very first women architects designed everything from factories to museums in the post-independence period. The generations that followed are now responsible for metro systems, shopping malls, corporate headquarters, and IT campuses for a global India. But they also design schools, cultural centers, religious pilgrimage hotels, and wildlife sanctuaries. Pioneers in conserving historic buildings, these women also sustain and resurrect traditional crafts and materials, empower rural and marginalized communities, and create ecologically sustainable architectures for India. Today, although women make up a majority in India’s ever-increasing schools of architecture, it is still not easy for them, like their Western sisters, to find their place in the profession. Recounting the work and lives of Indian women as not only architects, but also builders and clients, opens a new window onto the complexities of feminism, modernism, and design practice in India and beyond. Set in the design centers of Mumbai and Delhi, this book is also one of the first histories of architectural education and practice in two very different cities that are now global centers. The diversity of practices represented here helps us to imagine other ways to create and build apart from "starchitecture." And how these women negotiate tradition and modernity at work and at home is crucial for understanding gender and modern architecture in a more global and less Eurocentric context. In a country where female emancipation was important for narratives of the independence movement and the new nation-state, feminism was, nonetheless, eschewed as divisive and damaging to the nationalist cause. Class, caste, tradition, and family restricted—but also created—opportunities for the very first women architects in India, just as they do now for the growing number of young women professionals today.

Book The Book of the Damned

Download or read book The Book of the Damned written by Charles Fort and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 1140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia Forteana anthologizes the cult hero’s four classic works on the strange, the unexplained, and the just plain weird: The Book of the Damned, Lo!, Wild Talents, and New Lands. It features Fort’s complete, unabridged text and a subject index. Here are the four books that invented our understanding of the paranormal. These are cult hero Charles Fort’s defining records of bizarre, haunting, strange, and inexplicable “facts” for which science cannot account: Frogs falling from the skies. Mysterious airships in an age before flight. Monsters. Poltergeists. Floating islands. Teleportation (a term Fort invented). These are the works that moved novelist Theodore Dreiser to write: “To me no one in the world has suggested the underlying depths and mysteries and possibilities as has Fort. To me he is simply stupendous.” Now, Fort’s classic investigations are newly collected with a preface by biographer Jim Steinmeyer. Complete with a full subject index, here is the definitive Fort anthology for our times.

Book The Storms Below

Download or read book The Storms Below written by Paul Stuewe and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Garner was a hard-drinking, opinionated tough guy who fought with editors, publishers and everyone else he considered part of the Establishment. Yet beneath this brash, angry exterior, Garner was a writer of sensitive short stories and a novel, Cabbagetown, that has become a Canadian classic. Garner's stories were drawn from his own rough, adventurous life, a life portrayed in all its wildness and pathos in The Storms Below. From an impoverished childhood in Toronto's working-class Cabbagetown to his time riding the rails in the Depression, from the Spanish Civil War to the Royal Canadian Navy, from youthful radicalism to cantakerous, middle-aged conservatism, Paul Stuewe chronicles the many passages of Garner's controversial career. A definitive biography of a unique Canadian writer, drawing on extensive interviews with Garner's family, friends and colleagues, The Storms Below has the excitement and emotional impacy of a good novel.
