Book Traces of Contact in the Lexicon

Download or read book Traces of Contact in the Lexicon written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can the languages spoken today tell us about the history of their speakers? This question is crucial in insular Southeast Asia and New Guinea, where thousands of languages are spoken, but written historical records and archaeological evidence is yet lacking in most regions. While the region has a long history of contact through trade, marriage exchanges, and cultural-political dominance, detailed linguistic studies of the effects of such contacts remain limited. This volume investigates how loanwords can prove past contact events, taking into consideration ten different regions located in the Philippines, Eastern Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and New Guinea. Each chapter studies borrowing across the borders of language families, and discusses implications for the social history of the speech communities.

Book Indonesian English A Linguistic Indentity in A Global Tongue

Download or read book Indonesian English A Linguistic Indentity in A Global Tongue written by Ignatius Tri Endarto and published by UGM PRESS. This book was released on 2024-07-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of World Englishes which is now being increasingly recognized by most linguists and scholars has stimulated the search for a new linguistic model that can accommodate and facilitate the use of English as a lingua franca. On the other hand, the paradigm of World Englishes also necessitates recognition of various Englishes from different parts of the world. ln Indonesia, more teachers are starting to understand that todays English language instruction is no longer aimed at merely imitating foreign varieties, such as American English, British English. and Australian English. However, they are faced with a dilemma because it means that they might need to give up the long-established prescription for American, British. or Australian English as the only desired language model. The lack of clarity regarding which variety should be used as a model for English language teaching in Indonesia is what underlies the writing of this book. lt is an attempt to identify and describe the linguistic features of Indonesian English in the hope of foreseeing any functional version of the variety which might become a factor in the plurality of World Englishes. With all its limitations, this book seeks to provide a brief depiction of the linguistics of Indonesian English and discussion about the extent to which this variety may be integrated into the practices of English language teaching in Indonesia. "Unlocking the door to a new era in language instruction, this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the evolving linguistic landscape in Indonesia. As English transforms into a global lingua franca, this book navigates the complexities faced by educators, offering a thoughtful and practical guide to incorporating the distinctive features of Indonesian English. A must-read for anyone shaping the future of English language teaching, this work is a beacon of clarity in a world of linguistic diversity." Assist. Prof. Dr. Kiki Juli Anggoro School of Languages and General Education, Walailak University, Thailand

Book A Survey of Word Accentual Patterns in the Languages of the World

Download or read book A Survey of Word Accentual Patterns in the Languages of the World written by Harry van der Hulst and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a wealth of information on the word accentual (metrical, stress) phenomena that we encounter in natural languages. Two types of information will be supplied: language profiles in 'tabular form' and survey articles. Of the total of 10 chapters in Part I, 3 are general in nature, while the other 7 describe and analyze word accentual systems in all continents. The volume's point of departure is a database called StressTyp. StressTyp developed into a database on word prosodic systems of the languages of the world. The over 500 languages, representing a wide geographical distribution, taken from the StressTyp database will be represented in this volume. For all these languages, information regarding identity, sources and stress location(s) will be included, accompanied by some examples in nearly all cases. These language data packages will be organized by language family. This information constitutes Part II of the volume.

Transliterations of terms appear before the representations in foreign characters. Spanning the classical, medieval, early modern, modern, and contemporary periods, these are terms that influence thinking across the humanities. The entries, written by more than 150 distinguished scholars, describe the origins and meanings of each term, the history and context of its usage, its translations into other languages, and its use in notable texts. The dictionary also includes essays on the special characteristics of particular languages--English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Originally published in French, this one-of-a-kind reference work is now available in English for the first time, with new contributions from Judith Butler, Daniel Heller-Roazen, Ben Kafka, Kevin McLaughlin, Kenneth Reinhard, Stella Sandford, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Jane Tylus, Anthony Vidler, Susan Wolfson, Robert J. Book Syllable Weight

Download or read book Syllable Weight written by Matthew Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the first systematic exploration of a series of phonological phenomena previously thought to be unified under the rubric of syllable weight. Drawing on a typological survey of 400 languages, it is shown that the traditional conception that languages are internally consistent in their weight criteria across weight-based processes is not corroborated by the cross-linguistic survey. Rather than being consistent across phenomena within individual languages, weight turns out to be sensitive to the particular processes involved such that different phenomena display different distributions in weight criteria. The book goes on to explore the motivations behind the process-specific nature of weight, showing that phonetic factors explain much of the variation in weight criteria between phenomena and also the variation in criteria between languages for a single process. The book is unlike other studies in combining an extensive typological survey with detailed phonetic analysis of many languages. The finding that the widely studied phenomenon of syllable weight is not a unified phenomenon, contrary to the established view, is a significant result for the field of theoretical phonology. The book is also an important contribution to the field of phonetically-driven phonology, since it establishes a close link between the phonology of weight and various quantitative phonetic parameters.
