This second edition of the Dictionary of Basilian Biography is approximately three times the size of the original edition by Father Robert J. Scollard, published in 1969. The increase in size is due not only to the additional number of members who died between that year and 2002, but also to additional archival research into the lives and careers of the early members of the Congregation in France. It represents eight years of work by editor P. Wallace Platt and his editorial board, enriching the book and balancing its presentation.

Book excerpt: When Archbishop Henry O’Leary became the second archbishop of Edmonton in 1920, he had a dream to build a western Canada Catholic college that would educate students in the Christian intellectual tradition.This is the story of how a small Roman Catholic institution confronted daunting challenges to become a Christian beacon of enlightenment at the very heart of the secular University of Alberta. Scholarship and community life in residence was always supplemented with teaching from the Christian Ministry Team, to form Christian citizens who would go out into the world to serve the larger community following graduation. In 1963, the Congregation of St. Basil took over the administration of the College from the Christian Brothers de la Salle who had administered the College from its founding in 1926. Since its establishment almost ninety years ago, the College has continued to provide young men and women with post-secondary courses grounded in Roman Catholic thought while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at the University of Alberta. Initially, a residence was built for men, but O’Leary’s dream of also constructing a women’s residence never died and was finally realized in 2015. Faced with slender means, misunderstandings, student mischief and personality clashes, the mission of St. Joseph’s College has guided faculty, administrators, staff and Board members throughout its history and melded them into a close-knit community whose example is the envy of other units at the University of Alberta.

Larry Wolff's deeply engaging account of these events delves into the politics of the Episcopal elite, the Vatican, and the three rulers behind the partitions: Catherine II of Russia, Frederick II of Prussia, and Joseph II of Austria. Wolff uses correspondence with bishops in the Uniate Church and ministerial communiqués to reveal the nature of state policy as it unfolded. A versatile athlete and exceptional student, he studied at the University of Toronto, where his history professor, Lester Pearson, suggested a career in diplomacy. Instead, Flahiff entered the Basilian order, studied in Paris, taught at the Pontifical Institute, and became superior general of the Basilians. Named archbishop of Winnipeg, he fell in love with the west. His appointment as archbishop coincided with the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). Inspired by the Vatican sessions he attended, he strove for the spiritual renewal of the people of his diocese, becoming a clear and constant voice of the Church in Canada and beyond. Open to new things but respectful of the old, he spoke up for the rights of women and the importance of the laity in the Church. His ecumenical leadership in Manitoba was outstanding. Ultimately a cardinal and elector of two popes, George Flahiff stands out among bishops because he defied stereotypes, preferring buses to limousines, "George" to "Eminence," and friendship to privilege. Never seeking greatness in any way but ever obedient to his calling, he rose to the highest ranks in the Church, accepting each new position with faith and humility. P.
