Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissued version of the classic text Basic Physics will help teachers at both the high-school and college levels gain new insights into, and deeper understanding of, many topics in both classical and modern physics that are commonly taught in introductory physics courses. All of the original book is included with new content added. Short sections of the previous book (174 in number) are labeled 'Features.' These Features are highlighted in the book, set forth in a separate Table of Contents, and separately indexed. Many teachers will value this book as a personal reference during a teaching year as various topics are addressed. Ford's discussions of the history and meaning of topics from Newton's mechanics to Feynman's diagrams, although written first in 1968, have beautifully withstood the test of time and are fully relevant to 21st-century physics teaching.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics: A d104-Book for Secondary Schools A'r this date the teachers of Physics in secondary schools are confronted with an embarrassing wealth of manuals and other guides for the work of their classes. The mul tiplication of such aids is one natural consequence of the full acceptance that Physics has found in recent years, as an almost indispensable part in the opportunities offered to pupils of that grade. The fact is also a significant witness to a healthy striving toward excellence among those interested in Physics, in order that the newer sub jcet may sustain favorable comparison with the standards of the older tradition, as regards the nourishing quality of its matter and its methods. Book Essential Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Matolyak
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2013-12-17
  • ISBN : 1466575212
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Essential Physics written by John Matolyak and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluency with physics fundamentals and problem-solving has a collateral effect on students by enhancing their analytical reasoning skills. In a sense, physics is to intellectual pursuits what strength training is to sports. Designed for a two-semester algebra-based course, Essential Physics provides a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of physics central to many fields. It omits material often found in much larger texts that cannot be covered in a year-long course and is not needed for non-physics majors. Instead, this text focuses on providing a solid understanding of basic physics and physical principles. While not delving into the more specialized areas of the field, the text thoroughly covers mechanics, electricity and magnetism, light, and modern physics. This book is appropriate for a course in which the goals are to give the students a grasp of introductory physics and enhance their analytical problem-solving skills. Each topic includes worked examples. Math is introduced as necessary, with some applications in biology, chemistry, and safety science also provided. If exposure to more applications, special topics, and concepts is desired, this book can be used as a problem-solving supplement to a more inclusive text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Physics: For Secondary Schools Physics ought to be a live subject, a reasonable explanation of the every-day events of life. It seems to the author of this text-book that in recent years the attempt to include in physics a large amount of mathematics and all applications of the principles of the science have resulted in high school texts which are far too difficult for one year for the average high school pupil. Applied Physics is a result of an attempt to select the fundamental principles with barely enough common applications to make them clear to the pupil and to bring them home to every-day life, leaving plenty of time for the teacher to supplement with other applications from the pupils' lives which are of local interest and which must differ in every locality. The author, then, believes that the best methods of teaching the subject are as follows: 1. By a brief text for all of which the pupil will be held responsible, and, 2. By the addition of many interesting local applications to be supplied by both teachers and pupils. With few exceptions illustrative experiments are not described in the text. They should be performed. A large amount of demonstration work is a great aid to the understanding of the subject. If the illustrative experiments are performed for the class, as they should be, it is useless to cumber the book with a detailed description of them.
