There, at the session of Commission 10, we proposed to organize a Symposium which would stress the observational aspects of solar activity. It was our hope that such a Symposium might stimulate studies of those important problems in solar physics which for a long time had been neglected in overall scientific discussion. Although a provisional date for the Symposium was then decided, it did not take place to avoid overlapping with other lAO activities. At the session of Commission 10 in Sydney -on the occasion of the XVth lAO General Assembly in 1973 -we repeated our proposal and forwarded the invitation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to organize the Symposium in Prague. Both were accepted. During the discussions about the programme of the Symposium -enthusiastically promoted by the late president of Commission 10, Prof. K. O. Kiepenheuer -it was decided to change slightly its subject. The theoreti cal problems were stressed and the majority of the Scientific Organizing Committee agreed not to deal with short-lived phenomena of the solar activity or with individual active regions. Symposium No. 71 was held in Prague from August 25 to August 29, 1975. Its Organizing Committee consisted of V. Bumba (Chairman), W. Deinzer, R. G. Giovanelli, R. Howard, K. O. Kiepenheuer, M. Kopecky, T. Krause, M. Kuperus, G.

Book excerpt: Evidence from observations and paleoclimate records suggest that solar outputs, including solar irradiance and energy particles, belong to the fundamental natural forces of the climate system. It is consistent that the variation of solar irradiance on the orbital time scale controls glacial interglacial cycle. However, the contribution of solar output fluctuation due to solar activity to decadal to centennial climate change is still contradictory. The common driving force mechanism is then the key role of solar-climate linking research, and the mechanism of solar forcing and the pathway of amplification could be two key scientific problems in climate research. In recent years, a lot of studies have been done on the effects of solar activity on the climate, based on data analysis by observation/reanalysis or mechanism tracking by modeling. The interannual and decadal solar signals in the regional climate were found and the hypothesis of driving mechanisms was proposed. Meanwhile, the potential contribution of solar variability to the current climate prediction has attracted more and more attention. The purpose of this topic is to collect and reveal new results and new understandings about the impact of solar variability on climate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the research was to help in identifying the most likely physical mechanisms for the effects of variable solar activity on the weather. The method of attack was largely empirical, and this method was chosen for the following reasons: (1) in order to tap the great pool of scientific talent that may be able to offer sound physical mechanisms, it is necessary to demonstrate that there are some important relationships to explain; and (2) if the experiments are carefully designed, they can be useful in eliminating certain mechanisms which seem to have a low probability of success, and picking out the mechanisms which look more promising. Some results are presented.
