Download or read book The WTO written by Rorden Wilkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rorden Wilkinson explores the factors behind the collapse of World Trade Organisation (WTO) ministerials – as in Seattle in 1999 and Cancun in 2003 – and asks why such events have not significantly disrupted the development of the multilateral trading system. He argues that the political conflicts played out during such meetings, their occasional collapse and the reasons why such events have so far not proven detrimental to the development of the multilateral trading system can be explained by examining the way in which the institution was created and has developed through time. In addition, this new text: explores the development of the multilateral trading system from the creation of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947 to the WTO’s Hong Kong ministerial in December 2005 examines the way in which the interaction of member states has been structured by the institution’s development assesses the impact of institutional practices and procedures on the heightening of political tensions and explains why WTO ministerials exhibit a propensity to collapse but why the breakdown of a meeting has so far not prevented the institution from moving forward This book will be of interest to scholars and students of international politics, economics and law

Download or read book Trade Policy Issues and Developments written by Mr.Shailendra J. Anjaria and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1985-07-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the salient features of recent developments and outlines the prospects for trade policy by highlighting the main issues that will determine the scope and timing of liberalization under a possible new General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) round of multilateral trade negotiations. As the more advanced developing countries acquire the skills and investments to diversify exports toward more sophisticated manufactured products, restrictions against them tend to multiply. These not only impede the export prospects of the developing countries directly affected, but also slow specialization and diversification, thus severely affecting the smaller developing country exporters. Across-the-board protectionist measures have been avoided in the industrial countries because it is widely acknowledged that trade restrictions and protectionism are inappropriate responses to exchange rate developments. Exchange rate movements reflect financial flows as well as trade flows, and the importance of exchange rates that correspond to underlying economic fundamentals is unquestioned.
Download or read book Mainline written by George Wilson Malone and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wherever he went, in whatever country he visited, Senator Malone applied himself to the purpose of his visit with the mind of a trained engineer. Two things were uppermost in his thoughts. They were these: —What was the relationship between facts and events as he saw them, and the strategic position of these United States; and —What was the cumulative effect of other countries’ policies upon the workingmen and investors of his own Nation, whether in industry or on ranch or farm? He reported his findings to his colleagues in the Senate, in floor debates; the committees on which he served published literally thousands of pages of his reports. The people of Nevada re-elected him to the Senate in 1952. For the next two years Senator Malone was chairman of the Minerals, Materials and Fuels Economics Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. He went on to rank as minority member of the latter Committee and a member of the Senate Committee on Finance. This is the man whose reports and analyses you are about to read, and whose specific proposals are presented for your assessment.

Download or read book Mega Regional Trade Agreements written by Thilo Rensmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of "Mega-Regionals", the new generation of trans-regional free-trade agreements (FTAs) currently under negotiation, and their effect on the future of international economic law. The main focus centres on the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), but the findings are also applicable to similar agreements under negotiation, such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).The specific features of Mega-Regional Trade Agreements raise a number of issues with respect to their potential effect on the current system of international trade and investment law. These include the consequences of Mega-Regionals for the most-favoured-nation (MFN) principle, their relation to the multilateral system of the World Trade Organization (WTO), their democratic legitimacy and their interaction with existing bilateral investment treaties (BITs).The book is intended for academics and practitioners working in the field of international economic law.
