Book excerpt: Die Jubilaumsschrift zum 200jahrigen Bestehen der Basler Bibelgesellschaft beginnt bei den Basler Humanisten und Reformatoren, und das mit gutem Grund, haben doch die Manner der Grundergeneration selber die Bibelbewegung ihrer Zeit mit der Reformation verglichen. Getreu dem Grundsatz, auch im sakralen Bereich zu den Ursprungen (ad fontes) vorzustossen, erhofften sich die Humanisten ein besseres Verstandnis der Lehre Christi und damit eine Erneuerung der Theologie. Dazu verhalfen die Editionen der Kirchenvater sowie die Ausgaben des Neuen und des Alten Testamentes im Originaltext durch Erasmus und Sebastian Munster. An den Reformatoren ist es nun, die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse ans Volk heranzutragen. Das geschieht durch Predigt, Vorlesungen in deutscher Sprache, v.a. aber durch die zahlreichen Bibelausgaben der Basler Buchdrucker in der Volkssprache. Das 17. Jahrhundert verdrangt weitgehend diesen lebendigen Geist. Die Lehre von der Verbalinspiration fordert Intoleranz und Ausgrenzung Andersdenkender. Aber selbst das Zeitalter der sog. Hochorthodoxie weist Theologen auf, die fur Frieden und Toleranz eintreten und versuchen, die biblischen Lehren auf die eigene Zeit anzuwenden. Vollends ist das der Fall bei dem weithin bekannten Samuel Werenfels, einem Vertreter der sog. 'vernunftigen Orthodoxie'. Nicht mehr die 'reine Lehre' steht im Vordergrund; an ihre Stelle treten christliche Grundwerte wie Toleranz, Liebe und Frommigkeit. In der Uberzeugung, dass auch die Vernunft von Gott gegeben sei, lesen diese Manner die Bibel nach denselben Kriterien, die sie auch bei der Lekture weltlicher Schriften anwenden. Damit stehen auch der Bibelforschung, wie sie etwa der Basler Joh. Jak. Wettstein in Holland betreibt, neue Moglichkeiten offen. In einer Reihe von Kurzbiographien wird das Leben und Wirken der Grundergeneration nachgezeichnet sowie aufgrund erstmals erschlossener Quellen die Entstehung der neuen Basler Bibel dargestellt. Dass aber neben der Bibelverbreitung auch die Missionsarbeit zur Aufgabe einer Bibelgesellschaft zahlt, wurde von den Grundern wiederholt betont. Anhand zahlreicher Belege glaubt der Verfasser nachweisen zu konnen, dass auch diese vom Pietismus gepragte Generation sich dabei nicht einzig auf den biblischen Taufbefehl beruft, sondern, bewusst oder unbewusst, sich vom Sendungsbewusstsein der Aufklarung leiten lasst.
