Book The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball 2d ed

Download or read book The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball 2d ed written by Jonathan Fraser Light and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other sport, baseball has developed its own niche in America's culture and psyche. Some researchers spend years on detailed statistical analyses of minute parts of the game, while others wax poetic about its players and plays. Many trace the beginnings of the civil rights movement in part to the Major Leagues' decision to integrate, and the words and phrases of the game (for example, pinch-hitter and out in left field) have become common in our everyday language. From AARON, HENRY onward, this book covers all of what might be called the cultural aspects of baseball (as opposed to the number-rich statistical information so widely available elsewhere). Biographical sketches of all Hall of Fame players, owners, executives and umpires, as well as many of the sportswriters and broadcasters who have won the Spink and Frick awards, join entries for teams, owners, commissioners and league presidents. Advertising, agents, drafts, illegal substances, minor leagues, oldest players, perfect games, retired uniform numbers, superstitions, tripleheaders, and youngest players are among the thousands of entries herein. Most entries open with a topical quote and conclude with a brief bibliography of sources for further research. The whole work is exhaustively indexed and includes 119 photographs.

Book Hits and Misses in the Baseball Draft

Download or read book Hits and Misses in the Baseball Draft written by Alan Maimon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If unpredictability is so much of what makes sports compelling, the baseball draft might be the best place to look. This book explores the intricate uncertainties of the draft and the people who face it. Since the modern draft began in 1965, major league teams have attempted, with varying degrees of success, to identify and develop stars of the future. Whether because of injury, poor performance or mental and physical struggles, a large percentage of the most ballyhooed prospects never reach the game's highest level. Though teams have improved in recent years at turning top picks into major leaguers, the baseball draft is still centered on educated guesswork. This book explains why.

Book The Draft

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pete Williams
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 2007-04-01
  • ISBN : 1429910011
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book The Draft written by Pete Williams and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An explosive look at the NFL Draft from the inside out that exposes the multilayered feeding frenzy that swarms around America's top college players. The Draft follows a handful of NFL hopefuls through the ups and downs of the 2004 college football season and the predraft process, culminating with the 2005 draft. Among the prospects are Virginia defensive end Chris Canty, who overcomes a devastating early-season knee injury to reestablish himself as a top draft hopeful, only to suffer a detached retina in a nightclub skirmish; and Fred Gibson, a talented but rail-thin Georgia wide receiver who struggles to put on the weight needed to go over the middle in the NFL. It's a complex environment, with college coaches attempting to protect their "student-athletes" from exploitation (while fully aware that they can only remain competitive if they attract NFL-caliber players to their schools), along with sports agents and NFL scouts trying to stay a step ahead of their competition. These parties provide a multi-angled view of the world of emerging NFL talent. The reader follows the season through the eyes of a host of power players and scouts, from veteran agent Pat Dye Jr. to Jerry Maguire clone Jack Scharf, to the coaching divisions of Florida State University and the University of Virginia--headed by longtime Bill Parcells disciple Al Groh. Also central to the narrative are the Atlanta Falcons and former executives Rich McKay and Tim Ruskell, who use a character-based evaluation system to set their draft board. These parallel stories weave together, culminating in draft weekend, to create a gripping and fascinating look at a world few see from the inside.

Book The Incredible Albert Pujols 60 Minutes Bio A Hyperink Quicklet

Download or read book The Incredible Albert Pujols 60 Minutes Bio A Hyperink Quicklet written by Anita T. and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-02-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Albert Pujols is the type of ballplayer who quietly goes about his business, which in his case means putting up offensive numbers unparalleled in baseball history. Thus far in his career, he has been a better hitter than baseball giants Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Babe Ruth. Pujols is a franchise player, the kind who carries teams to world championships. No doubt this is why the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim signed the burly first baseman to a historic mega-deal for more than $250 million over 10 years. ESPN baseball analyst Jayson Stark summed up the deal on ESPN.com: “On an unforgettable Thursday morning at baseball's 2011 winter meetings, [the Angels] stunned their sport and changed their world, all in one dramatic swoop.” Perhaps the most incredible thing about Pujols is the kind of person he is outside the stadium. In a 60 Minutes interview that aired in April 2011, Bob Simon revealed another side of the fierce competitor who burns to be the best of the best. Viewers got to know a young man who sees beyond the disabilities of people with Down syndrome. A man of faith who follows his beliefs rather than peer pressure. A sports superstar who has not forgotten where he came from, the slums of a third world country. Finally, the interview hinted at why Pujols, who spent the first 10 years of his career playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, decided to his future awaited in the far west. MEET THE AUTHOR Anita is el presidente y peón of Sabaku, Inc., a marketing services company that provides writing, editing, research, analysis and consulting for a diverse assortment of clientèle. The loves of her life are split into two seasons: during the fall/winter she pursues a degree in Japanese language, and spends spring/summer joyfully immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of minor league baseball. A retired speed-freak and super-jock, her current life is moderately active. She grew up in the Bay Area of California, and her almae matres include San Leandro High and U.C. Davis. In fact, she remembers what San Jose looked like before Silicon Valley. Now happily settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, she shares her home with a pair of mixed-mutt bundles of canine goodness named Molly and Linus. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK In the 60 Minutes segment on Albert Pujols, Bob Simon opens with an unbelievable claim: “We’re going to tell you about one of the best baseball players who ever lived.” The viewer soon comes to learn that the stats bear him out. In the ten years following his major league debut in 2001, Pujols has hit higher than .300 AVE, more than 30 HR, and more than 100 RBI. Pujols began chasing his dream of playing major league baseball at age 18. He still has a scrapbook filled with high school highlights. In 1999, he was one of many eagerly awaiting the First-Year Player Draft, when professional baseball clubs choose the best young baseball talent in the country. His expectations were high, and he was confident of being drafted in the early rounds. But he was passed over, round-after-round, until he was finally selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in round #13. They paid him a small signing bonus and sent him to their minor league team in Peoria, IL. Pujols was so disappointed, he felt like quitting baseball. Deidre remembers how tough things were at the beginning: “There were times we'd have these conversations, I’d think, I need to file for bankruptcy. I don't know how I'll ever get this paid off.” Fortunately, Deidre didn’t file for bankruptcy and Albert didn’t quit baseball. By the end of the season, he’d climbed his way to the top of the minor league ladder. He made his major league debut in 2001, and in the fourth game of his career hit his first home run. Nowadays, teammate Lance Berkman offers free advice to pitchers facing Pujols when there are runners on base: it would be better to risk walking in one run than risk giving up four from a grand slam. Pujols is that good. There is little doubt he belongs in the “pantheon of the greatest,” says writer Peter Gammons, who’s covered baseball for longer than Pujols has been alive, 40 years. Book Baseball Greatness

Download or read book Baseball Greatness written by David Kaiser and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in baseball statistical analysis have made it possible to assess the totality of contribution each player makes to team success or failure. Using the metric Wins Above Average (WAA)--the number of wins that the 2016 Red Sox, for example, added because they had Mookie Betts in right field, instead of an average player--the author undertakes a fascinating review of major league baseball from 1901 through 2017. The great teams are analyzed, underscoring why they were successful. The great players of each generation are identified using simple, reliable metrics--from Ty Cobb through Mike Trout, and pitchers from Christy Mathewson to Clayton Kershaw. Surprises abound. The importance of pitching is found to be vastly exaggerated. Many Hall of Fame pitchers (and some hitters) achieved immortality almost entirely on the backs of their teammates, while a few over-qualified players still await induction. Focusing on today's rosters, the WAA assessment shows that the game is threatened by an unprecedented shortage of great players.
