Book Baseball in San Diego From the Plaza to the Padres

Download or read book Baseball in San Diego From the Plaza to the Padres written by Bill Swank and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball in San Diego: From the Plaza to the Padres, takes the reader on a seven-decade journey from Horton Plaza, the site of San Diego's first base ball game in 1871, to lower Broadway and the future home of Lane Field. Before the Pacific Coast League, San Diego had three Class D teams. One was the Bears, whose frustrated owner Dick Cooley complained, "I don't believe they'll make baseball pay here in a thousand years." With America's finest year-round climate, barnstorming and black baseball were popular attractions. Rube Foster's Chicago American Giants practically lived in San Diego in the winter of 1913. All the while, there were constant struggles between the forces of amateur and professional baseball for players, diamonds, and sports coverage.

Book excerpt: The first color action photo of Ted Williams (as shown on the front cover) was taken at Lane Field in San Diego on October 5, 1941 by an amateur photographer. Nobody knew of its existence until an old wooden cigar box was found in a basement in 1999. This book is a treasure chest of such old San Diego baseball pictures and memories. From the Padres to Petco focuses on San Diego's love affair with the Padres from the Pacific Coast League years at Lane Field (1936-57), Westgate Park (1958-67), San Diego Stadium (1968) and through 35 more exciting and often exasperating National League summers in Mission Valley (1969-2003). Through it all, Padre fans have been faithful and forgiving. With a new ballpark, San Diego looks to build a winning tradition.

Download or read book Bob Breitbard San Diego s Sports Keeper written by Dan Fulop and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Breitbard: San Diegos Sports Keeper, chronicles the life and accomplishments of a visionary sportsman and great San Diego icons. An all-star in San Diegos sports lineup for more than half a century, Breitbard was involved in the local sports scene as a player, coach, team owner, builder, booster and benefactor of institutions and organizations that helped make San Diego a major-league city. Breitbard followed his football playing and coaching days at Hoover High School and San Diego State College by becoming the guardian and promoter of the citys sports scene. In 1946, he founded the Breitbard Athletic Association to honor local high school, amateur and professional athletes, and later established the Breitbard Hall of Fame. The Foundation developed into the San Diego Hall of Champions, which today is the nations largest multi-sport museum and a shrine to honor local high school, amateur and professional sports stars- hometown heroes of the past, present and future. Breitbard was the driving force behind the building of the San Diego Sports Arena and the owner of its original tenant, the Gulls of the Western Hockey League, and the expansion NBA Rockets. Breitbard was also one of the founding members of the Greater San Diego Sports Association, a group that helped build San Diego Stadium, bring the Chargers and major-league Padres to town, establish and support the Holiday Bowl and other first-class sports events and facilities. Much more than just a uniquely dedicated caretaker of San Diegos sports, the kind and generous Breitbard was a local treasure that helped make San Diego the wonderful city it is today.

This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capturing such quintessentially American pastimes as baseball and road trips in one fascinating work, the updated and expanded third edition of Chris Epting’s Roadside Baseball chronicles more than 500 important events in baseball history with detailed descriptions of the event and information on each location. Packed with historical data, trivia, photographs, and baseball lore, entries include the birthplaces of baseball legends, ballparks, museums and halls of fame, final resting places, and many locations that are no longer standing. From out-of-the-way spots to the most popular stadiums in the U.S. and Canada, no site is too small or insignificant to be included in this comprehensive guide. The third edition of Roadside Baseball includes hundreds of newly discovered landmarks, including the former locations of stadiums that have been torn down since the last edition of the book (Yankee stadium, Shea stadium, Tiger stadium, etc.), information on the Negro Leagues Baseball Marker project which has placed headstones around the country to honor forgotten African-American ballplayers, new exhibits at existing MLB parks, and suggested daytrip itineraries located near your favorite stadiums. Other new entries include the actual diamond used for the classic film, The Sandlot; the exact location where Mickey Mantle’s legendary 565-foot blast landed; the baseball field in Orange County, California where many believe Babe Ruth hit the longest home run of his career against the great Walter Johnson (along with extremely rare photos of Ruth both batting and pitching during that very game); the newly marked location in Kekionga, Indiana where the first major league game was played in 1871; all 29 markers along the new “Hot Springs Baseball Trail” celebrating baseball history in Arkansas; and Heckscher Fields in Central Park, New York, where Larry David’s softball team played in an episode of “Curb Your Enthusisam.” Entries from the previous edition include the Buckminster Hotel in Boston, where the Black Sox planned their fix of the 1919 World Series; the original little league field and museum in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; the birthplace of Jackie Robinson; the place where Mickey Mantle was discovered by a scout from the New York Yankees; and the site of the original Wrigley Field, erected in Los Angeles in 1925. The third edition of Roadside Baseball is the most comprehensive book ever written on the locations of baseball landmarks, and the perfect gift for baseball fans of all ages!

Book Beisbol on the Air

Download or read book Beisbol on the Air written by Jorge Iber and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the U.S. population and Major League Baseball rosters have seen dramatic demographic changes over the past 50 years. The nation and the sport are becoming multilingual, with Spanish the unofficial second language. Today, 21 of 30 MLB teams broadcast at least some games in Spanish. Filling a gap in the literature of baseball, this collection of new essays examines the history of the game in Spanish, from the earliest locutores who called the plays for Latin American audiences to the League's expansion into cities with large Latino populations--Los Angeles, Houston and Miami to name a few--that made talented sportscasters for the fanaticos a business necessity.

Book Bob Chandler s Tales from the San Diego Padres

Download or read book Bob Chandler s Tales from the San Diego Padres written by Bob Chandler and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2006 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The San Diego Padres became a National League expansion team in 1969. Through 37 seasons of play, the Padres have never won a World Series, never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter, and never had a player hit for the cycle. They have, however, made it to the World Series twice, had three different pitchers win the Cy Young Award, and had a player tie Honus Wagner for most National League batting titles (eight). They almost lost the franchise to Washington, D.C., had an owner take the public address microphone on opening day to blast his own players, and created national headlines when a nationally-known comedienne performed her version of the national anthem before a game.Longtime Padres announcer Bob Chandler knows the details behind all of these stories and shares his memories with San Diego baseball historian Bill Swank in an easy-to-read recap of the team's colorful past. They also look at many other stories: sick and severely dehydrated on the trainer's table, Ken Caminiti had an IV removed from his arm, ate a Snickers bar, then hit two home runs against the New York Mets in Mexico; the comic relief provided by the San Diego Chicken during the Padres lean years; and how popular Padre Tim Flannery became the mascot - a cross between a dinosaur and an anteater.Chandler and Swank utilize their numerous contacts to bring fans many inside stories and humorous anecdotes dating back to the team's actual birth on May 27, 1968. Eight-time batting champion Tony Gwynn and Cy Young Award-winner Randy Jones are among the former players providing insight and inside stories. Chandler's longtime broadcast partner Jerry Coleman, elected to the broadcasters' wing of the baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, has written the foreword. A colorful collection of owners, managers, coaches, and players over the years lends themselves to many interesting tales from the dugout, which all adds up to an informative, insider's look at the behind-the-scenes events that have shaped the history of the San Diego Padres.
