Book Baseball in Broome County

Download or read book Baseball in Broome County written by Marvin A. Cohen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the years, scores of players have polished their skills in Broome County with the Crickets, the Bingos, the Triplets, and today's Binghamton Mets. Professional baseball began in the area in 1871, and the highlights came quickly. The early stars included an eighteen-year-old future Hall of Famer, Montgomery Ward; the first known black player in professional baseball, Bud Fowler; and Hall of Famer "Wee Willie" Keeler. By 1923, the Triplets were playing in Johnson City. They soon became affiliated with the Yankees and sent that franchise some of their best players, including Whitey Ford, Vic Raschi, and Thurman Munson. From 1969 to 1991, professional baseball disappeared from Broome County, but it was back with a bang in 1992, featuring a new stadium and a firm relationship with the New York Mets. Baseball in Broome County recounts this great story with more than one hundred eighty photographs and engaging text.

Download or read book Bud Fowler written by Jeffrey Michael Laing and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the biography of Bud Fowler (ne John Jackson), the first African American to play in organized baseball, and the longest tenured at the time that the color line was drawn. In addition to his professional playing career, which lasted more than 25 years, Fowler was a scout, organizer, owner, and promoter of touring black baseball clubs--including the legendary Page Fence Giants--in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Emphasizing the social and cultural contexts for Fowler's accomplishments on and off the baseball diamond, and his prominence within the history and development of the national pastime, the text builds a convincing case for Fowler as one of the great pioneering figures of the early game.

Book excerpt: The Greater Binghamton area's undulating history mirrors that of its terrain. The area has evolved from a transportation center to a hub of manufacturing and technology and, with the expansion of Binghamton University and SUNY Broome Community College, a growing center of erudition. First, canal boats and trains dominated the landscape, then, cigars were produced in abundance, followed by shoes, simulators, and computers. Now, with Binghamton University expanding into downtown, student housing, breweries, and eateries fill Binghamton's streets. The area has earned the monikers "Parlor City," "Carousel Capital of the World," "Sports Mecca," and the "City of Festivals." Binghamton's cultural legacy is rich; besides being the home of professional baseball, bicycling, golf, hockey, running, and tennis, Binghamton's annual celebrations have included Mural Fest, July Fest, Spiedie Fest, and Luma Fest.

Book An Illustrated History of the Binghamton Mets

Download or read book An Illustrated History of the Binghamton Mets written by Jim Maggiore and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note: This book contains only BLACK-AND-WHITE photographs. It is the non-color version of "An llustrated History of the Binghamton Mets." Baseball returned to this town in 1992 and the numbers speak for themselves. Since 1992 Binghamton has sent more than 260 players to the big leagues. No fewer than 16 members of the New York Mets who were active for the World Series in 2015 played for Binghamton. More than five million fans have come out to cheer for the hometown team since 1992 and, when you add up all the donations the franchise has helped raise for the community, the amount is well over $1 million! The stars performing on the diamond have totaled almost as many as the number you can count on a clear summer night. Going around the diamond, Brook Fordyce, Lucas Duda, Edgardo Alfonzo, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Michael Conforto, Jay Payton, and Preston Wilson all wore the Binghamton uniform before starring in the majors. The mound, meanwhile, has been even more crowded with stars. How about a pitching staff of Matt Harvey, Jake deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler? Before the Flushing Faithful had them, Binghamton did! From 1992 to 2016 the franchise was known as the Binghamton Mets. Starting with the 2017 season, the team became known as the Binghamton Rumple Ponies. The new moniker paid tribute to Binghamton's appellation as the "Carousel Capital of the World," while also becoming an emblem for family entertainment and fun. This book captures the 25-year history of the Binghamton Mets. Whether you are a Binghamton denizen, New York Met or Yankee fan, or just a plain old fan of baseball, you'll delight in turning these pages and reliving the orange and blue history of the Binghamton Mets.
