Overfield. His son, Jim, updated and revised his dad's book into a richly illustrated, 400-page 8x10-inch book that updates the history of professional baseball in Buffalo through the 2020 season, which was cancelled for the Triple A Bisons because of the COVID-19 but includes a summary of the Toronto Blue Jays' home away from home in Buffalo during the summer because of the pandemic. That marked the return of major league baseball to Buffalo since the city had a franchise in the Federal League in 1905. Part One of the book is a year-by-year summary of each season from 1857 through 2020, complete with the team's manager, league, record, leading hitter, home run hitter and pitcher. Part Two is a collection of stories from Joe and Jim Overfield, Brian M. Frank and Michael J. Billoni, Assistant Editors of the book, along with Paul Langendorfer, Budd Bailey, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, Sal Maiorana of Rochester's Democrat and Chronicle and former WGRZ-TV sportscaster Jonah Javad, a sportscaster at WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas. There are also cartoons illustrated by Mike "Ricig" Ricigliano and more than 200 black and white and color photos. The book honors the memory of Joe Overfield, the former historian of the Buffalo Bisons and a member of the Greater Buffalo and Buffalo Baseball Halls of Fame. It is also a tribute to the resilience of the City of Buffalo and that game that has been part of the city's fabric for more than 160 years. Among those who have written testimonials are John Thorn, official historian of Major League Baseball; Chris Berman, ESPN Sports Broadcaster; Bob Costas, multiple Emmy award-winning sports broadcaster; Ken Rosenthal, baseball writer for The Athletic and Fox Sports and Pete Weber, the Voice of the Nashville Preditors of the NHL and the former Voice of the Bisons and Greg Brown, the Voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the former Bisons broadcaster.

Download or read book Ballpark written by Paul Goldberger and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhilarating, splendidly illustrated, entirely new look at the history of baseball: told through the stories of the vibrant and ever-changing ballparks where the game was and is staged, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic. From the earliest corrals of the mid-1800s (Union Grounds in Brooklyn was a "saloon in the open air"), to the much mourned parks of the early 1900s (Detroit's Tiger Stadium, Cincinnati's Palace of the Fans), to the stadiums we fill today, Paul Goldberger makes clear the inextricable bond between the American city and America's favorite pastime. In the changing locations and architecture of our ballparks, Goldberger reveals the manifestations of a changing society: the earliest ballparks evoked the Victorian age in their accommodations--bleachers for the riffraff, grandstands for the middle-class; the "concrete donuts" of the 1950s and '60s made plain television's grip on the public's attention; and more recent ballparks, like Baltimore's Camden Yards, signal a new way forward for stadium design and for baseball's role in urban development. Throughout, Goldberger shows us the way in which baseball's history is concurrent with our cultural history: the rise of urban parks and public transportation; the development of new building materials and engineering and design skills. And how the site details and the requirements of the game--the diamond, the outfields, the walls, the grandstands--shaped our most beloved ballparks. A fascinating, exuberant ode to the Edens at the heart of our cities--where dreams are as limitless as the outfields.

Download or read book Iran s Language Planning Confronting English Abbreviations written by Fatemeh Akbari and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most crucial and common questions confronting planners of languages other than English, that is, how the impacts of global languages on local languages should be dealt with: internationalization or local language promotion? This empirical study examines the implementation of Iran’s governmental language and terminology policy to accelerate rarely used abbreviation methods in Persian in order to preserve the language from the extensiveness of borrowed English abbreviated forms. This book provides an in-depth analysis of relevant linguistic theories as well as the structure and social context of the Persian language itself, rather than relying on personal opinions or beliefs either in favour of or against abbreviation. The text appeals to politicians, language planners, terminologists, lecturers, authors and translators of scientific works, especially those who are speakers of languages other than English and seek to promote their local languages. This book is particularly relevant to linguistics students (both undergraduate and graduate students) and language teachers and researchers in the broader areas of language education and curriculum design.

This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge International Handbook of Heritage and Politics surveys the intersection of heritage and politics today and helps elucidate the political implications of heritage practices. It explicitly addresses the political and analyses tensions and struggles over the distribution of power. Including contributions from early-career scholars and more established researchers, the Handbook provides global and interdisciplinary perspectives on the political nature, significance and consequence of heritage and the various practices of management and interpretation. Taking a broad view of heritage, which includes not just tangible and intangible phenomena, but the ways in which people and societies live with, embody, experience, value and use the past, the volume provides a critical survey of political tensions over heritage in diverse social and cultural contexts. Chapters within the book consider topics such as: neoliberal dynamics; terror and mobilisations of fear and hatred; old and new nationalisms; public policy; recognition; denials; migration and refugeeism; crises; colonial and decolonial practice; communities; self- and personhood; as well as international relations, geopolitics, soft power and cooperation to address global problems. The Routledge International Handbook of Heritage and Politics makes an intervention into the theoretical debate about the nature and role of heritage as a political resource. It is essential reading for academics and students working in heritage studies, museum studies, politics, memory studies, public history, geography, urban studies and tourism.
Download or read book Olympic Cities written by John Gold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Olympic Cities, published in 2007, provided a pioneering overview of the changing relationship between cities and the modern Olympic Games. This substantially revised and enlarged third edition builds on the success of its predecessors. The first of its three parts provides overviews of the urban legacy of the four component Olympic festivals: the Summer Games; Winter Games; Cultural Olympiads; and the Paralympics. The second part comprisessystematic surveys of seven key aspects of activity involved in staging the Olympics: finance; place promotion; the creation of Olympic Villages; security; urban regeneration; tourism; and transport. The final part consists of nine chronologically arranged portraits of host cities, from 1936 to 2020, with particular emphasis on the six Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games of the twenty-first century. As controversy over the growing size and expense of the Olympics, with associated issues of accountability and legacy, continues unabated, this book’s incisive and timely assessment of the Games’ development and the complex agendas that host cities attach to the event will be essential reading for a wide audience. This will include not just urban and sports historians, urban geographers, event managers and planners, but also anyone with an interest in the staging of mega-events and concerned with building a better understanding of the relationship between cities, sport and culture.
