Book excerpt: The Man Shield straddling the West African countries of Senegal, Sierra Leone, Mali, Ivory Coast Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger, consists of the Archean Kenema-Man Domain and the Paleoproterozoic Baoulé-Mossi Domain. It is characterized by World-class deposits of gold, iron and manganese which are located in this 1.1 million square km area. Few base-metal sulphide occurrences of economic interest have been described, although geological formations of similar age (Archean and Paleoproterozoic) in other parts of the world host large zinc, copper and nickel deposits. The purpose of this paper is to provide a metallogenetic inventory of the Man Shield, to assist in the evaluation of known sulphide occurrences as well as supporting the exploration of new deposits. The volume summarises the Base metal potential of the Lower and Middle Precambrian of West Africa by providing lithologic data, drill cores, thin section photographs of prevalent rocks and provides a 1:2000000 scale geological sheet map of the Man Shield Area (included).

Book excerpt: This Special Publication combines results obtained by interdisciplinary groups from numerous academic institutions working on Paleoproterozoic formations to decipher the origins of the main mineralization resources in the West African Craton (WAC) and their impacts on African economic development. Structural, geophysical, sedimentological, stratigraphical, geochemical, petrophysical and mineralogical analyses have been used to highlight the complexities involved in mineralization emplacement and its origin and evolution within the WAC. Fourteen articles contribute to new knowledge in mineral research. They show that the geodynamic evolution of the WAC is complex from one area to another: it involves subduction, collision and obduction during several deformation phases ranging from Birimian (2.3–2.0 Ga) to Pan-African (650–450 Ma) events. Various modelling techniques, when integrated, help in understanding the mechanisms of mineralization emplacement, some of which are still a matter of debate. The challenge for further studies is mitigation for sustainable development that can be appropriately used to minimize such damage.

This IGCP Project focussed on nine research objectives: 1) Comparison of Archean and Proterozoic supracrustal assemblages to more fully understand differences between Archean and post-Archean tectonic regimes; 2) To more fully understand the geochemical differences between Archean and post-Archean sediments and to evaluate the various factors that control sediment composition; 3) From combined U/Pb zircon and whole-rock Sm/Nd studies, to see if the apparent 2.4-2.0 continental crust "generation gap" is real; 4) To employ new techniques in the dating of individual zircons to more fully understand Proterozoic tectonic history and the role of crustal reworking; 5) From trace element ratios and Nd isotopic data from basalts, to better understand Proterozoic mantle evolution; 6) To encourage more detailed studies of the anorogenic granite-anorthosite association to better understand its origin and significance in terms of crustal evolution; 7) From combined Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopic data, to more precisely estimate the amount of new continental crust formed during the Proterozoic; 8) To encourage joint P-T and geochronological studies of Proterozoic and high-grade terranes to better understand Proterozoic orogenesis: and 9) To try and understand why hydrothermal precious metal deposits are relatively rare in the Proterozoic compared to both the Archean and the Phanerozoic.
