Book Computational Modeling Scaling of Plume Induced Flow Separation

Download or read book Computational Modeling Scaling of Plume Induced Flow Separation written by Yitong Gao and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigated the flow behavior of converging-diverging nozzle numerically. Results of a study exploring the use of saw-tooth surface modifications to improve supersonic micronozzle performance are presented. For certain configurations, the saw-tooth wall modification considered in this study produced an effective "velocity slip" along the surface of the nozzle, thus reducing the influence of viscous forces and enhancing nozzle performance. A parametric study examined how variations in the geometric scale and configuration of the individual "saw teeth" affected flow behavior, specific impulse, and thrust coefficient. By increasing the number of saw teeth, a point was reached where viscous forces damped out the impact that the surface modifications had on the overall flow field behavior. Under certain conditions, the saw-tooth surface modification was shown to increase nozzle performance. The flow structure of the exhaust from a converging-diverging nozzle into supersonic flow field has been investigated for both stead-state and transient analyses. The results of this study are presented, with particular emphasis on plume induced flow separation. The CD nozzles with straight afterbody configurations, having throat diameters on millimeter to centimeter were examined. The parametric studies involving freestream Mach number, chamber-to-ambient pressure ratio and the geometric scaling effects was conducted to explore the impact these parameters had on base-flow/plume interactions and plume induced flow separation (PIFS). The plume induced shockwave motion as well as the "hot zone" caused by the base-flow/plume interaction were investigated by considering freestream Mach and pressure ratio . The 2-equation k-ε Re-Normalization Group (RNG) model and k-ω Shear Stress Transportation (SST) model were utilized for turbulence calculation. Grid independent computational models were validated by comparison with previously published data. Correlations showing the relation between the boundaries of the recirculation zone when PIFS is present as well as the plume induced shock motion with respect to freestream Mach and pressure ratio are presented. Values of these parameters when PIFS and base-flow/plume interaction occur are discussed as a function of geometry.

Book Future Space Transport System Components under High Thermal and Mechanical Loads

Download or read book Future Space Transport System Components under High Thermal and Mechanical Loads written by Nikolaus A. Adams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents the findings of Collaborative Research Center Transregio 40 (TRR40), initiated in July 2008 and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Gathering innovative design concepts for thrust chambers and nozzles, as well as cutting-edge methods of aft-body flow control and propulsion-component cooling, it brings together fundamental research undertaken at universities, testing carried out at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and industrial developments from the ArianeGroup. With a particular focus on heat transfer analyses and novel cooling concepts for thermally highly loaded structures, the book highlights the aft-body flow of the space transportation system and its interaction with the nozzle flow, which are especially critical during the early phase of atmospheric ascent. Moreover, it describes virtual demonstrators for combustion chambers and nozzles, and discusses their industrial applicability. As such, it is a timely resource for researchers, graduate students and practitioners.

Book RESPACE Key Technologies for Reusable Space Systems

Download or read book RESPACE Key Technologies for Reusable Space Systems written by Ali Gülhan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-24 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago the Helmholtz Association (HGF) consisting of 15 research Institutions including the German Aerospace Center (DLR) started a network research program called ‘Virtual Institutes’. The basic idea of this program was to establish research groups formed by Helmholtz research centers and universities to study and develop methods or technologies for future applications and educate young scientists. It should also enable and encourage the partners of this Virtual Institute after 3 years funding to continue their cooperation in other programs. Following this HGF request and chance the DLR Windtunnel Department of the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology took the initiative and established a network with other DLR institutes and German u- versities RWTH Aachen, University of Stuttgart and Technical University Munich. The main goal of this network was to share the experience in system analysis, ae- dynamics and material science for aerospace for improving the understanding and applicability of some key technologies for future reusable space transportation s- tems. Therefore, the virtual institute was named RESPACE (Key Technologies for Re- Usable Space Systems).

Book Turbulent Shear Layer Shock Wave Interactions

Download or read book Turbulent Shear Layer Shock Wave Interactions written by J. Delery and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was on a proposal of the late Professor Maurice Roy, member of the French Academy of Sciences, that in 1982, the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics decided to sponsor a symposium on Turbulent Shear-Layer/Shock-Wave Interactions. This sympo sium might be arranged in Paris -or in its immediate vicinity-during the year 1985. Upon request of Professor Robert Legendre, member of the French Academy of Sciences, the organization of the symposium might be provided by the Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales (ONERA). The request was very favorably received by Monsieur l'Ingenieur General Andre Auriol, then General Director of ONERA. The subject of interactions between shock-waves and turbulent dissipative layers is of considerable importance for many practical devices and has a wide range of engineering applications. Such phenomena occur almost inevitably in any transonic or supersonic flow and the subject has given rise to an important research effort since the advent of high speed fluid mechanics, more than forty years ago. However, with the coming of age of modern computers and the development of new sophisticated measurement techniques, considerable progress has been made in the field over the past fifteen years. The aim of the symposium was to provide an updated status of the research effort devoted to shear layer/shock-wave interactions and to present the most significant results obtained recently.

Book Missile Dynamics Equations for Guidance and Control Modeling and Analysis

Download or read book Missile Dynamics Equations for Guidance and Control Modeling and Analysis written by Philip N. Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents some techniques used in deriving the equations of motion of a missile for a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulation. Several forms of the equations are developed, and their implementation is discussed. Specific emphasis is placed on showing the interrelation of the equation forms currently in use by showing their development from the basic laws. This report is meant to serve as a primer for new engineers and as a reference for all engineers involved in missile flight simulation.
