Book Democratic Republic of Congo Urbanization Review

Download or read book Democratic Republic of Congo Urbanization Review written by The World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democratic Republic of Congo has the third largest urban population in sub-Saharan Africa (estimated at 43% in 2016) after South Africa and Nigeria. It is expected to grow at a rate of 4.1% per year, which corresponds to an additional 1 million residents moving to cities every year. If this trend continues, the urban population could double in just 15 years. Thus, with a population of 12 million and a growth rate of 5.1% per year, Kinshasa is poised to become the most populous city in Africa by 2030. Such strong urban growth comes with two main challenges †“ the need to make cities livable and inclusive by meeting the high demand for social services, infrastructure, education, health, and other basic services; and the need to make cities more productive by addressing the lack of concentrated economic activity. The Urbanization Review of the Democratic Republic of Congo argues that the country is urbanizing at different rates and identifies five regions (East, South, Central, West and Congo Basin) that present specific challenges and opportunities. The Urbanization Review proposes policy options based on three sets of instruments, known as the three 'I's †“ Institutions, Infrastructures and Interventions †“ to help each region respond to its specific needs while reaping the benefits of economic agglomeration The Democratic Republic of the Congo is at a crossroads. The recent decline in commodity prices could constitute an opportunity for the country to diversify its economy and invest in the manufacturing sector. Now is an opportune time for Congolese decision-makers to invest in cities that can lead the country's structural transformation and facilitate greater integration with African and global markets. Such action would position the country well on the path to emergence.

Book Reinventing Order in the Congo

Download or read book Reinventing Order in the Congo written by Theodore Trefon and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinshasa is sub-Saharan Africa‘s second largest city. The seven million Congolese who live there have a rich reputation for the courageous and innovative ways in which they survive in a harsh urban environment. They have created new social institutions, practices, networks and ways of living to deal with the collapse of public provision and a malfunctioning political system. This book describes how ordinary people, in the absence of formal sector jobs, hustle for a modest living; the famous ‘bargaining‘ system ordinary Kinois have developed; and how they access food, water supplies, health and education. The NGO-ization of service provision is analysed, as is the quite rare incidence of urban riots. The contributors also look at popular discourses, including street rumor, witchcraft, and attitudes to ‘big men‘ such as musicians and preachers. This is urban sociology at its best - richly empirical, unjargonized, descriptive of the lives of ordinary people, and weaving into its analysis how they see and experience life.

Book Le Congo Kinshasa

Download or read book Le Congo Kinshasa written by Jean-Jacques Arthur Malu-Malu and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Trapped in the Congo Drama

Download or read book Trapped in the Congo Drama written by Raymond M. Ngoma and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells about the real drama that people of both Congo have gone through. Until now things havent changed yet, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the situation in the eastern part of the country is still the same. The war is still maintained by those who are helping rebel groups to invade the DR Congo in one sole objective: the illegal exploitation of natural resources of the DR Congo. By helping corrupt dictators stay in power and by always letting rival army groups fight in the DR Congo, multinational corporationssupported by strong western governmentscan continue their illegal exploitation of natural resources of the DR Congo. Some of the consequences of this situation are exactly what the author describes in this book: women are being raped over and over; children are becoming orphans because their parents are getting killed in the war; and people are destabilized because they are running away from the war zones. Also, the corruption that is generalized, makes people live in very poor conditions. People who are maintaining this kind of situation in the DR Congo do not care about the social living of the population; otherwise, what a five-years-old girl, orphan with infirmity in the leg, living by herself on the street, has done wrong to be punished in this manner? Clearly, minerals and other natural resources are the source of the suffering and misery of the DR Congo people. But, even when this country has a lot of minerals, this shouldnt be a reason to treat people less than animals. And about those natural resources which they dearly need, why cant they just find another way to deal with people of the DR Congo so they can all benefit from them without killing many people like animals? Let be human beings and respect God, the Creator, who gave us this planet Earth to live together in peace and harmony.

Download or read book Congo written by David Van Reybrouck and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as "a monumental history . . . more exciting than any novel" (NRC Handelsblad),David van Reybrouck’s rich and gripping epic, in the tradition of Robert Hughes' The Fatal Shore, tells the extraordinary story of one of the world's most devastated countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo. Epic in scope yet eminently readable, penetrating and deeply moving, David van Reybrouck's Congo: The Epic History of a People traces the fate of one of the world's most critical, failed nation-states, second only to war-torn Somalia: the Democratic Republic of Congo. Van Reybrouck takes us through several hundred years of history, bringing some of the most dramatic episodes in Congolese history. Here are the people and events that have impinged the Congo's development—from the slave trade to the ivory and rubber booms; from the arrival of Henry Morton Stanley to the tragic regime of King Leopold II; from global indignation to Belgian colonialism; from the struggle for independence to Mobutu's brutal rule; and from the world famous Rumble in the Jungle to the civil war over natural resources that began in 1996 and still rages today. Van Reybrouck interweaves his own family's history with the voices of a diverse range of individuals—charismatic dictators, feuding warlords, child-soldiers, the elderly, female merchant smugglers, and many in the African diaspora of Europe and China—to offer a deeply humane approach to political history, focusing squarely on the Congolese perspective and returning a nation's history to its people.
