Book Barter Exchange and Value

Download or read book Barter Exchange and Value written by Caroline Humphrey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-06-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns barter, a transaction in which objects are exchanged directly for one another without the use of money. Economists treat barter as an inefficient alternative to market exchange, and assume that it is normal only in 'primitive' economies or marks the breakdown of more developed exchange mechanisms. For their part, anthropologists have been more interested in the social and moral complexities of the 'gift', and treat barter dismissively as mere haggling. The authors of this collection do not accept that barter occupies a residual space between monetary and gift economies. Using accounts from different parts of the world, they aim to demonstrate that it is more than a simple and self-evident economic institution. Barter may constitute a mode of exchange with its own social characteristics occupying a specific moral space. This novel treatment of barter represents an original and topical addition to the literature on economic anthropology.

Book Contracts in Trade and Transition

Download or read book Contracts in Trade and Transition written by Dalia Marin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An institutional approach to explaining countertrade and barter in international trade and domestic trade in transition economies. Difficulties in contract enforcement impede international transactions in the world economy and domestic transactions in transition economies. In Contracts in Trade and Transition, Dalia Marin and Monika Schnitzer explain how barter as an economic institution can facilitate contract enforcement across national borders in international trade and within borders in transition countries. The authors show that international countertrade—tying an export to an import—emerged in the 1980s in response to the international debt crisis when Western creditors refused to finance imports to developing countries and Eastern Europe. Barter—the exchange of goods without the use of money—reemerged in transition economies in the 1990s in response to a domestic debt crisis when banks in transition countries were reluctant to provide finance to firms. Countertrade and barter introduce a deal-specific form of collateral that addresses the lack of creditworthiness of countries and firms. Drawing on contract theory, the authors argue that parties might want to pay in goods rather than cash or link an export with an import as in countertrade to solve incentive problems that otherwise would prevent any trade from taking place. The incentive problems they discuss are the technology transfer problem to developing countries and the "lack of trust" problem in the former Soviet Union.

Book Modeling Monetary Economies

Download or read book Modeling Monetary Economies written by Bruce Champ and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This upper-level undergraduate textbook, now in its second editon, approaches monetary economics using the classical paradigm of rational agents in a market setting. Too often monetary economics has been taught as a collection of facts about existing institutions for students to memorize. By teaching from first principles, the authors aim to instruct students not only in existing monetary policies and institutions but also in what policies and institutions may or should exist in the future. The text builds on a simple, clear monetary model and applies this framework consistently to a wide variety of monetary questions. The authors have added in this second edition new material on speculative attacks on currencies, social security, currency boards, central banking alternatives, the payments system, and the Lucas model of price surprises. Discussions of many topics have been extended, presentations of data greatly expanded, and new exercises added.

Book Barter and the Future of Money

Download or read book Barter and the Future of Money written by Terry Neal and published by Mastermedia Publishing Company. This book was released on 1996-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than just an account of what money has been and what it will be, this book explores how readers can think about money in new ways -- profitably. The authors introduce readers to the rarely imagined, rarely talked about alternative economies -- where big deals and transactions take place with "trade dollars", and "cash equivalent credits". Neal tells how the U.S. military created the conditions and means for America's long term prosperity -- likening the Internet to the Roman system of roads. And the author's historical digressions form the foundation for a not-so-shocking hypothesis. "Look for a dramatic growth in Private Money. Although not long ago bartering was looked on with suspicion by the IRS, trading surplus goods and services for things of value has quickly become an above-board alternative means of conducting business. Barter and The Future of Money shows readers how important trading will become in the future as more and more savvy business people, determined to succeed whether they have the necessary cash on hand or not, enter the entrepreneurial market. This insider's scoop comes from years of experience in the barter industry and shows how airline credit, artwork, stocks, phone cards, media credits and other goods can become currency. Big business will learn how "offst" and "corporate trading" can open new markets -- the way PepsiCo got into the Russian vodka business as well as how to develop a "Capital Recovery Strategy" for disposing surplus inventory at full wholesale value. The reader will learn about "E-cash", "Breakage", "Ratioing", "Keystoning", "Credit Unwind", and "Exit Strategies for Illiquid Assets", and other concepts that are key tounderstanding how fortunes will be made tomorrow. For those who want to keep up with trends in m

Book The World for Sale

Download or read book The World for Sale written by Javier Blas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern world is built on commodities - from the oil that fuels our cars to the metals that power our smartphones. We rarely stop to consider where they have come from. But we should. In The World for Sale, two leading journalists lift the lid on one of the least scrutinised corners of the world economy: the workings of the billionaire commodity traders who buy, hoard and sell the earth's resources. It is the story of how a handful of swashbuckling businessmen became indispensable cogs in global markets: enabling an enormous expansion in international trade, and connecting resource-rich countries - no matter how corrupt or war-torn - with the world's financial centres. And it is the story of how some traders acquired untold political power, right under the noses of western regulators and politicians - helping Saddam Hussein to sell his oil, fuelling the Libyan rebel army during the Arab Spring, and funnelling cash to Vladimir Putin's Kremlin in spite of western sanctions. The result is an eye-opening tour through the wildest frontiers of the global economy, as well as a revelatory guide to how capitalism really works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Financial Times and Economist Best Book of the Year exploring world trade from Mesopotamia in 3,000 BC to modern globalization. How did trade evolve to the point where we don’t think twice about biting into an apple from the other side of the world? In A Splendid Exchange, William J. Bernstein, bestselling author of The Birth of Plenty, traces the story of global commerce from its prehistoric origins to the myriad controversies surrounding it today. Journey from ancient sailing ships carrying silk from China to Rome in the second century to the rise and fall of the Portuguese monopoly on spices in the sixteenth; from the American trade battles of the early twentieth century to the modern era of televisions from Taiwan, lettuce from Mexico, and T-shirts from China. Bernstein conveys trade and globalization not in political terms, but rather as an ever-evolving historical constant, like war or religion, that will continue to foster the growth of intellectual capital, shrink the world, and propel the trajectory of the human species. “[An] entertaining and greatly enlightening book.” —The New York Times “A work of which Adam Smith and Max Weber would have approved.” —Foreign Affairs “[Weaves] skillfully between rollicking adventures and scholarship.” —Pietra Rivoli, author of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy

Book Fur Fortune and Empire The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America

Download or read book Fur Fortune and Empire The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America written by Eric Jay Dolin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Seattle Times selection for one of Best Non-Fiction Books of 2010 Winner of the New England Historial Association's 2010 James P. Hanlan Award Winner of the Outdoor Writers Association of America 2011 Excellence in Craft Award, Book Division, First Place "A compelling and well-annotated tale of greed, slaughter and geopolitics." —Los Angeles Times As Henry Hudson sailed up the broad river that would one day bear his name, he grew concerned that his Dutch patrons would be disappointed in his failure to find the fabled route to the Orient. What became immediately apparent, however, from the Indians clad in deer skins and "good furs" was that Hudson had discovered something just as tantalizing. The news of Hudson's 1609 voyage to America ignited a fierce competition to lay claim to this uncharted continent, teeming with untapped natural resources. The result was the creation of an American fur trade, which fostered economic rivalries and fueled wars among the European powers, and later between the United States and Great Britain, as North America became a battleground for colonization and imperial aspirations. In Fur, Fortune, and Empire, best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin chronicles the rise and fall of the fur trade of old, when the rallying cry was "get the furs while they last." Beavers, sea otters, and buffalos were slaughtered, used for their precious pelts that were tailored into extravagant hats, coats, and sleigh blankets. To read Fur, Fortune, and Empire then is to understand how North America was explored, exploited, and settled, while its native Indians were alternately enriched and exploited by the trade. As Dolin demonstrates, fur, both an economic elixir and an agent of destruction, became inextricably linked to many key events in American history, including the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812, as well as to the relentless pull of Manifest Destiny and the opening of the West. This work provides an international cast beyond the scope of any Hollywood epic, including Thomas Morton, the rabble-rouser who infuriated the Pilgrims by trading guns with the Indians; British explorer Captain James Cook, whose discovery in the Pacific Northwest helped launch America's China trade; Thomas Jefferson who dreamed of expanding the fur trade beyond the Mississippi; America's first multimillionaire John Jacob Astor, who built a fortune on a foundation of fur; and intrepid mountain men such as Kit Carson and Jedediah Smith, who sliced their way through an awe inspiring and unforgiving landscape, leaving behind a mythic legacy still resonates today. Concluding with the virtual extinction of the buffalo in the late 1800s, Fur, Fortune, and Empire is an epic history that brings to vivid life three hundred years of the American experience, conclusively demonstrating that the fur trade played a seminal role in creating the nation we are today.

Book Barter when It s Booming

Download or read book Barter when It s Booming written by Orla Stapleton and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing theory suggests barter is peripheral, a remnant of the pre-market era, or called upon when things go wrong. Barter has typically been examined in contexts where the market: has collapsed, is emerging, or is transforming. These contexts suggest barter is a temporary substitute for money until a functioning market has been restored. Comparatively little research exists on bartering among businesses in an established functioning economy. Yet, as I show, barter is embedded in the market economy. Barter is in the tax code. Barter is not something to which people revert, but is part of their economic life. Admittedly, the practical benefits of money over barter have been established. Money standardized the value of products and services, is more efficient, is accepted currency globally, and modernized trade. Surprisingly then, given the option of using money or barter, small-business owners use both. This dissertation therefore asks: why and how do small-business owners barter in the context of a developed, functioning market economy? The study takes place in Midwest College Town. I surveyed 77 small-business owners in the Midwest College Town area and of those, interviewed 47. I draw mainly from four industries: food and beverage, personal care, farming, and construction, but include other sectors. The data reveal that barter among small-business owners is a necessary and symbiotic component of - rather than a substitute for - the market economy. It is an economic and social action, influenced by the context and personal relations of the small-business owner. A challenge in explaining economic action, has been to find the sweet spot between what is "economic" and what is "social" (Granovetter 1992, Granovetter 2017). Traditionally, gift exchange (Kula) has been credited with creating social cohesion (Malinowski 1922, Mauss 1925), while barter (Gimwali) has been dismissed as commodity exchange or relegated to fringe societies or alternative markets (Humphrey and Jones 1992). Barter among small-business owners is an economically purposive action that draws on meaning, symbols and personal relations in the barter interaction. Through this interaction, barter results in social outcomes such as the reification of trust, the creation of social bonds and the emergence of social solidarity.
